Tell me about a random unsolved mystery in your life....

....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

No wonder there are giant rats about.

frangipan · 15/04/2014 22:11

about six years ago someone pushed £70 in cash through our letter box, no envelope just a pile of £10 and £20 notes on the mat. No one owed us the money for anything, everyone we asked seemed genuinely surprised and denied all knowledge of it. It drives me less crazy these days, the not knowing. BUT WHO WAS IT????????

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 15/04/2014 22:10

What's with the random bakery items. on roads and pavements?

What a waste. Sad

Mine isn't very interesting. I got a Valentines text about 2 years ago from an unknown number just saying 'Happy Valentines Day'. I went to work and showed my colleague who had the exact same text from the same number at the same time. Tried to ring it from work phone to find out who it was but nothing. I text back asking who it was and the person replied 'the mystery of Valentines Day. Regards to (dp name). Was weird!

Ooh I have another once, pet related.

As a child/teen, we had a pet budgie. I came home one day, to find the budgie dead in the middle of the living room, and the dog hiding under the table looking very worried. The budgie didn't have a mark on it and looked like it had just fallen off something and died, so I don't think it was the dog (dog was petrified of the bird anyway!).

I digress... The budgie cage was shut. No gaps anywhere, no doors open, nothing. How the bloody hell did the bird get out of the cage? Never fathomed that one out either!

I'm intrigued by a house that still has its Christmas tree up and tree lights on, all day. The tree is going brown now. Same happened last year and I wondered if something had happened to the owner, or maybe they were waiting for an anniversary to pass or someone to return home. But at some point in the year it came down and a new one went up at Christmas.

JulietBravoJuliet · 15/04/2014 22:04

We have food appear round here too! Always next to the dog poo bin down the lane, for some reason. It varies from sausages, cobs and scotch eggs, to apple pies! I wonder if it's some kind of secret code...?

NurseyWursey · 15/04/2014 22:04

Oh also

I had a hamster, it was in a plastic cage (so not a cage really)

It went missing. I checked the cage thing, completely safe, no holes or anything. I checked it numerous times. Yet it was gone. Only me in the house. Nowhere to be seen.

Also my DP has a 'man room' and the light keeps coming on when we go out. We've even had the locks changed. Keeps coming on. Really annoying me now.

I lost a brand new mobile phone while I was off sick from school and didn't leave the house for a week. No idea where it went and I couldn't have lost it outside as I didn't go outside. Never found it. Got into so much trouble for that and I have no idea how it happened.

NurseyWursey · 15/04/2014 22:00

How did I not notice a ball of poo :(

I still think about it, ten years on

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 15/04/2014 21:59

Nursey it was already there when you got in to bed sorry.

NurseyWursey · 15/04/2014 21:58

revolting I swear it happened. I've never told anyone ever because I was so embarrassed in case they thought I crapped myself! I had to swiftly put it in loo roll and change the sheets because I was sharing a room Blush

mollysmummy1970 · 15/04/2014 21:58

Oh my god! There's somebody round my way that does the same thing!

I usually walk my dog at 8am every morning and I always go down this wee lane where there is ALWAYS snacks on the pavement! Crumpets, scones, sandwiches, you name it! This is funny that I'm not the only one that has experienced this! Grin

RevoltingPeasant · 15/04/2014 21:57

Once someone stole my DSis's glasses from her at a service station when I was taking care of her. I was 12 and she was 2. I got in such trouble. Who steals a toddler's glasses ffs?

I genuinely have no ideas! It freaked me out, I can tell you!

NurseyWursey · 15/04/2014 21:56

I can't believe I'm sharing this. I have NEVER EVER told anyone this in my life but I will share now and hopefully people will have some input.

When I was in high school we went to a trip to france and stayed in a hostel.
When I woke up I went to the toilet, and noticed there was a brown mark at the bottom of my pj pants.
I looked in my bed, and found a ball of poo. It looked like human poo.
I checked my bum, my trousers, knickers etc and no marks.

How did the poo get into my bed.

spookyskeleton · 15/04/2014 21:55

Why someone would pinch a black leather purse with an unusual silver bottle charm on it from me at Exeter Services last July and not do the decent thing and hand it in somewhere when they opened it to find that it only contained 3 packets of tablets which I desperately needed. I would love to know what made you act like such a jerk.

Mrswellyboot · 15/04/2014 21:52

Juliet that is unreal

I was trying for a baby and was saying a particular prayer to Our Lady. A novena for nine days. On the first day I was going into town and a woman came up to me a gave me a medal of Our Lady. Nine months later and a little DS.

I haven't told anyone in real life except dh.

cafesociety · 15/04/2014 21:50

I once had a garage door which was broken and I was too broke to get it fixed. I went to open it one day [it opened lopsidedly, with difficulty] and it was ok, done, fixed! I asked a friend I was close to at the time of she'd sorted it, she denied it....

I would like to know exactly how many half brothers I have, it's 7 or 8 I think. But fear I shall never know. It will remain a mystery.

GrimbleGrog · 15/04/2014 21:49

I think someone works in a bakers or something and these are the day's leftovers. He/she doesn't know how to say "no thanks" and so takes the lot, with profuse thanks, waits 'till they're down the road then rummages through the bag and discards the unwanteds.
You need to check whether the baked goods are all from the same place/shop/whatever, is there packaging about?

JulietBravoJuliet · 15/04/2014 21:48

When I was 15, I lost my house keys. Mum got me some new ones cut, but I was gutted as I had a very distinctive keyring on them that I really liked.

4 years later, I was living in my own place and working 20 miles away in a pizza place. One night, I was locking up at work and on the worktop in the kitchen was a bunch of keys. With a very distinctive keyring! I took them and tried them in my parents' front door, and they were the keys I'd lost 4 years previously!

I was, at the time, wearing a uniform I didn't possess before starting this job, driving a car which I obviously didn't have at 15, and not living in the house anymore. None of my colleagues had a clue where the keys had come from; no one admitted to putting them there. Complete mystery and I've never managed to work it out!

Hassled · 15/04/2014 21:46

When we kept chickens, one of them did actually cross the road. We never found out why, but it made us laugh for about 10 years. That's our mystery.
