....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

We hear a double clunk every night from the old lady who lives next door, like a zed-bed being unfolded. It's always around 1am.

She is able-bodied and sprightly. She lives in a four-bedroomed house. Why would she use a zed-bed? What else could it be?

SnotandBothered · 17/04/2014 00:41

Hopping that is one of the weirdest mysteries on here. Missing time is bizarre.

BeaWheesht · 17/04/2014 00:24

Ooh the knocking on the bedroom window is horrible.

I also get the seeing people before rely seeing them thing and also the thing with seeing something, acknowledging it and then needing it / the thing I thought might happen, happen. It's very strange.

Also a friend from school has 2 young kids, we text maybe once a year? Both times she's been pregnant I've texted her when she was 12 weeks saying 'hey what's new?' Just knowing she was pregnant.

In my old student flat there was a hatch in the ceiling and in it was a hamster cage complete with food and bedding etc but no hamster, also a load of hardcore porn mags.

A few years back a friend invited me to go to a psychic evening with her at a local restaurant and I agreed. Early in that day I decided to clear all the receipts and crap out of my handbag which I used all the time, in it I found a business card for a builder who had done work for us a quite few years earlier, which was odd as the handbag was new since then and I knew he had died since.

That evening the psychic spoke directly to me and asked me "Who was the person buried with football tickets and a teddy?", I had no idea and said so then a lady put her hand up across the room and said "I think that's for me". She was the widow of the builder.

Krispy I know. Over the years I have tried to persuade myself that I must have mentioned my mouse, but deep down I know I didn't because i had forgotten all about him until that day. He was (and still is) in my parents attic.

My mum - knowing the story - once asked DS why he called the Mouse what he did, and DS told her that it was because that is 'what his face looked like'.

Actually, the mice look quite different from each other, and DS's is much bigger, but still....

KrispyCakehead · 16/04/2014 23:53

Omg Snot Shock That's..... I'm speechless.....

Hoppinggreen · 16/04/2014 23:52

When I was at uni I left my room with 15 minutes to get to my lecture 5 mins away.
I arrived and waited outside but nobody else came, then I realised that I could hear a noise coming from inside the room so I opened the door and found out I was 20 minutes late so somehow a 5 minute walk had taken me 35 minutes. I had walked straight there so I figured the only answer was that the clock in my room was wrong ( didn't have a watch)
When I got back to my room later I asked someone the correct time so I could reset my clock and it was right!!! I checked with 2 other people as well and my clock was right.
So somehow I " lost" 30 minutes , no idea how.

SnotandBothered · 16/04/2014 23:44

oooooh I've remembered another one.

DS has a fair few soft toys - mostly elephants and dogs. They are all called things like 'Cuddly' 'Snowy' 'Bumpy' - quite childish, simple names.

A few years back, he was given a really sweet soft brown mouse by an elderly neighbour. As she handed it to him, she asked him what he was going to call him. DS (about 4 at the time) looked at the Mouse and randomly came up with a made up word - Laspetzian.

I asked him to say it again and he repeated it.

I went completely cold because it had jogged a memory of a Soft (blue) Mouse being bought for me by my dad whilst on holiday in Italy. I had named it La Spezia, after the town we were in. I had completely and utterly forgotten and definitely never mentioned it to any of the DC.

I called my mum that day and asked if she remembered by Blue mouse, and without promoting she said "Oh you mean La Spezia".

Apart from sticking an 'n' on the end, DS had called his mouse exactly the same thing.

BigArea · 16/04/2014 23:36

ItsSpring that sounds scary - have you spoken to the police about it?

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 16/04/2014 23:35

A few years ago i came home from work an there was a pirate DVD sitting on top of my letter box in a clear dust cover. It had 'finding nemo' written on it in marker . My ds was a toddler at the time so i wondered if one of my neighbours had left it for him. I put him to bed and thought i'd check the quality of the film but when i put it on it turned out to be 'four christmases' with reese witherspoon and vince vaughn. All very odd. I asked all the neighbours i knew and all my family but nobody had left it. Still dont know where it came from. The bit i find most odd is that it was on top of the letter box and not in it Confused

I once lived in a flat and every night locked up my bike by my kitchen window. One morning I came out as usual to cycle to work & someone had swapped my saddle for a different saddle overnight...! V weird & I still to this day have no idea who did it or why!

fuckertyfuckfuck · 16/04/2014 23:28

Recently DP and I went out for the day, came home and in the middle of the kitchen floor was a gold braclet.
Neither of us own any gold, the window was shut and we live on the first floor!

Second one that baffles me is when I was pregnant with DD things were tough money wise as I had to move and needed carpets, bed etc.
I was set up with everything I and DD would need (DP wasn't around then) but someone sent me £300 to my new address, addressed to me. I didnt know the hand writing and hadnt given anyone my new adress either. No note nothing. Id love to say thank you to this person though

SnotandBothered · 16/04/2014 23:24

Brian YYY to thinking 'I bet I see them' before the first looky-likey appears. Just YYY!!! I am practically air punching with joy at finding someone who doesn't think I'm barking Grin

ItsSpringBaby · 16/04/2014 23:24

Here's a bit of a sinister one. Someone keeps knocking at my bedroom window at night. It has happened a few times now, at around 8-9pm. One knock and that's it Confused

It happened again tonight and as I'm alone with the kids I didn't open the curtains to check, I just ignored it. It can't be anyone I know well as they'd call beforehand or knock the door at least! And it's definitely not my neighbours. I looked out the window 10 mins after I heard it, complete darkness. Very weird.

deakymom · 16/04/2014 23:23

is that the phone ringing? que 3 people frantically searching for the phone which turns out not to be ringing at all 5 minutes later PHONE RINGS i do that all the time my husband tells me i should wait for someone to actually ring rather than just think about ringing me i am then compelled to point out my phone is usually lost so i need the lead time Grin

i also dream about flying down the stairs although im afraid of flying! once i slipped and really did fly down them i grabbed the hand rail to stop myself and slammed back down again i swear all i was thinking was ohdeargod ive no will made!

the weirdest thing is my sons toys long story short my husband had two brothers one died at around six months (before he was even born) when my son was around 6 months old his toys began playing all by themselves (not uncommon when batteries are running low) it drove us nuts so we removed the batteries the blasted toy still played! a lot of people blamed his deceased brother for this as it mostly happens when his mom goes on holiday (we end up babysitting the ghost)

SnotandBothered · 16/04/2014 23:23

And at the risk of being the most non-woo-but-quite-woo-after-all person on the thread, I too have the childhood flying memory. For me, it only ever happened in one place that was a pre-school place that wasn't even a nursery that my mum used to take me to once a week. I must have been about 2 years old and there was a stage at one end of the hall.

I recall - quite clearly - jumping off it, but taking far longer than I should to reach the ground. I could 'hover' for several seconds before landing and whilst I was hovering, I had that sensation you get in your tummy when you drive over a steep double bump.

I can even remember telling my mum to watch me, but then being frustrated because I couldn't do it in front of her because I was nervous.

I used to look forward to going there so I could fly, but it used to take a whilst to pluck up the nerve to leap off the stage.

It's one of my strongest early childhood memories.

BrianButterfield · 16/04/2014 23:20

We were at the pub for dinner the other night, and I randomly thought about a pupil at my school who I know lives near there. I thought "I bet I see her, but first I'll think I see her". Sure enough, a looky-likey trotted by and made me give a second glance. Then five minutes later, the girl ran past the window at full speed! I know she lives near but she could have stayed in, or walked a different way from her house.

SnotandBothered · 16/04/2014 23:14

Brian exactly! Isn't the weirdest thing knowing the difference between "oh actually, that's not so and so" and moving on, and "oh that's not so and so but it IS a sign that I will see so and so in the next day or so"? That knowing spooks me almost as much as the rest of it.

It has happened as long as I can remember and whenever I have tried to explain it to anyone, they just look at me like Hmm so I just accept it now. And it's actually quite nice when you kind of know you are going to see someone you like and haven't seen in ages.

The number plate one is really odd - a strange one that springs to mind for me was thinking I saw a friend of mine twice in a couple of days - both times it clearly wasn't on second glance, but both times felt like a premonition IYKWIM, but the 2 'false; sightings were both people who had a similar walk/height etc but very different hair - shorter and darker. A few days later, when I bumped into my real friend (who I hadn't seen for about 6 months), he had had his blonde hair cut much shorter and the result was also much darker. That was a weird one indeed.

I am actually SO glad it isn't just me.

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 16/04/2014 22:58

I think all these stories of hidden/ lost things disappearing or turning up are amazing. I have that kind of thing happen on trivial scale quite a lot and I often get the sense of wee pixies laughing at me. Hmm At least, imagining them helps me not to lose my rag.

KrispyCakehead · 16/04/2014 22:56

My Kindle Fire BOOMS out the first line of the can-can tune at 7pm every night. I have no idea why Grin

KrispyCakehead · 16/04/2014 22:51

Eminy.. Have you heard of astral travelling. You may have been flying down the stairs in your sleep as did your mum before you.

I have vague notions of being able to do similar but they are fuzzy notions now...

BrianButterfield · 16/04/2014 22:21

Snot OMG I thought I was the only one! I know what you mean about "knowing", too. Sometimes I think I see a person I would actually like to see, but then I feel disappointed as I can tell it's not a "real" false sighting.

Once I saw a car with a personal plate that made me look twice as it was so like one belonging to someone I knew. It wasn't theirs, and it was on a different type of car anyway. I thought "if you have a personal plate, can you just put it on a new car?" and was wondering the logistics through in my head. I turned a corner, and there at the traffic lights was the first person's personal plate. On a different car. I wasn't even surprised.

PurpleBouncingHoppily · 16/04/2014 22:20

measuree !!

PurpleBouncingHoppily · 16/04/2014 22:20

Fantastic thread - spooked, saddened and intrigued in equal measur

Mine was a couple of years ago. We had a power cut on Christmas Day. Thankfully we had nobody visiting that year, and it was after dinner. We were pissed off about Doctor Who (dds 13 and 10 at the time), but decided to make the best of it, light some candles and play wholesome family games in front of the fire.

It all went well until we began playing Charades. When anyone stood up to take their turn, the right answer just popped into my head. Sometimes they had time to mime that it was a film or whatever, and sometimes I piped up before they'd even had a chance to move Confused. I must have done it with about two-thirds of the answers.

My dds still talk about it. Whenever I display any degree of perspicacity, they round on me sternly and say: "Mum, I hope you're not going to Do That Thing again!" I still don't know what the fuck got into me.

RavenRose · 16/04/2014 22:10

Blueandwhitelover,

I have the old address from old papers I cleaned out after mum died. It's not far from the aunt who wouldn't tell me. We did a detour about 10 years ago to have a nosy. It's pretty much as I remember even though we left in the early 70s. I didn't think to ask any neighbours when we were there! However we had a cranky and hungry toddler with us!

Also my birth certificate shows my dad in a completely different occupation. Its odd
