....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

No, I never heard from him again. But a couple of months later I got a phonecall from the hostel we stayed at, saying that the police from X station had been around looking for him, saying his family was offering a reward to anybody able to give information about his whereabouts. So, I rang X station, thinking as I was the last person to have spoken to him (that his parents knew of) I could give them information about his workplace, etc. They had no record of him, any reward, or officers sent to question anybody about him, so I was put through to N S Y. It was most puzzling and absurd.

One lunchtime when I was pg with my twins I went to a charity shop near my work to see if they had any maternity clothes. I was going through the rails when the lady asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. She came to show me where the maternity clothes might be, and looked for me. Then she said "Twins, is it?" "Yes" I said. I was a bit surprised because I wasn't that huge yet. "Do you know what they are?" Me: "No." Her: "Do you want to know?" Me: "No, I want the surprise." She went quiet for a moment and then said "Well, you won't be disappointed" and we left it at that. I was convinced that I was having two boys.

They were born 10 weeks early, a boy and a girl, and were kept in the NCU for 9 weeks. One day I took time off from sitting in the hospital and went into town. Found myself near the charity shop. The woman was there. I asked her if she remembered me, and she said No. I told her that I'd come in when I was expecting twins and she had sort of hinted that she knew what they were going to be. She looked hard at me and then said "Oh yes, a boy and a girl, wasn't it?" I asked her how she'd known and she said that sometimes pictures sort of came into her head, like a radio tuning into a signal. She didn't want them but didn't know how to turn them off. Sometimes she had pictures of boat sinkings etc but never knew which boat, but there would be a major one a couple of days later.

My DH is a scientist but even he accepts that there are things we can't explain!

A penfriend came to stay with me and left to head off to another country, I never heard from her again and she never made it home either. Her parents reported her missing, I never knew what happened to her.

A school friend was in Thailand when it was the tsunami, they were a keen scuba diver. I've never heard if they were caught up in it or not and nobody else from school knows but their regularly updated web page has never been updated since but it is still live, or was last time I checked.

Finally, I would love to know where a child hood friend, Julie L. from Durham is. I would love to get in touch again, we lost touch after she stopped spending weekends at the same place as us and I never heard from her again.

SnotandBothered · 17/04/2014 17:16

babyhinder do you have a chimney/open fireplace? Could a bird be stuck up there and shedding feathers?

cherryhealey · 17/04/2014 17:14

I find feathers too ....strangely comforted by them.

All over the house even in bathrooms .

I keep finding weird things on the floor at home.

They look like a copper coloured nib of a pen (but not hollow) so a teensy, long cone shape with flat ends. They are about 3-4mm in length, and look like they have a 'screw thread' on it. I have no idea what they are or what they are for.

AdeleNazeem · 17/04/2014 16:12

this has reminded me of something that happened when my daughter was about one and a half /two when I lived in south London.

One day, I took her to crystal palace park; I had never been there before and she had never been there either. Definitely, as her father had peeved off when she was a few weeks old and she hadn't been taken out by anyone but me in all that time.

but all the way round the park she kept saying things like "ooh the dinosaurs are round this corner" , at first I thought just coincidence but it happened so many times, at least twenty times she 'predicted' what was in the park and every time I was slightly taken aback. I knew I had never been there before, I had no recollection of the things she pointed out, and she was too young to have seen a tv programme or map or something and remembered these things. And this was pre-internet!

asked her about it later and she happily said "I used to come here with my other mummy and daddy before I lived with you"... I was seriously spooked! She'd never said anything like that before and hasn't since though.

My mini mystery is that ever since I've moved house just over a month ago I keep finding white feathers in my living room I always pick them up and bin them but I don't own anything with feathers in my cushions e.c.t are filled with stuffing and I have a fake electric fireplace so it's not from that either.

DS had just started nursery and I went to George to pick up some cheap t-shirts he could wear to get mucky/ paint in. there was a Sale rail at the front as I went in and I got a couple of good bargains from it, including a red Chugginton t-shirt for a £1 that was reduced as it was missing parts of the set.

On the way to the checkout on the other side of the store I passed the aisle with PJs and picked up a pair of Thomas the Tank PJs that I knew DS would love. They were the kind that are in the sealed plastic packaging. That night I got the new PJs out for DS to wear and found inside the packaging a pair of navy blue shorts that didn't belong with the set, folded up in between the PJS. On closer inspection I noticed they had a small Chugginton logo on one leg. I compared the label and barcode with the bargain tshirt I had bought on the sale rail and found they were in fact from the same set, same size (2-3 years)everything!

I got a real bargain that day, but I guess it was just luck that I picked up both those items from different parts of the shop.

squoosh · 17/04/2014 15:11

That's spooky and sad Quint.

tigerpug · 17/04/2014 15:11

Quinteszilla, have you heard anything from his since??

Quinteszilla · 17/04/2014 15:08

My one also involves a Michael.

He was a friend from "down under". We were staying at a hostel in London, he was job hunting. He was a chef. I came with him for a job interview in a large pub, having a coffee down the road waiting for him. He got the job, it was live in, so we went back to the hostel for him to spend his final night there. Had some celebratory drinks in the evening. He left to drop off his luggage the next day and we had plans to meet later. He never showed. He was not at the pub. He had not turned up for work. I thought this was a bit strange but thought he possibly changed his mind and went "walkabout". It played on my mind though, but waited a couple of months before I decided to give his parents a call. They had not heard from him since July when I last saw him, and were going to report him missing.

Boglin · 17/04/2014 15:05

The disappearing beers in the rock pool - sinkhole/quicksand?

I wish some of my lost jewellery would reappear, I have a bracelet that colleagues bought me when I left my previous job and I lost it in the house somewhere and have not seen it in about 4 years, would love to know where it went.

squoosh · 17/04/2014 14:59

Poor Michael, he must have had some explaining to do! Grin

tigerpug · 17/04/2014 14:51

My scottish boyfriend lived at home with his parents (we were teenagers) and we used to chat every night on the phone. One night i rang his number as normal, his scottish mum picked up

Me "oh hi, its tiger pug, is michael there"
Phone lady "he's busy, can you ring later"
Me "ok, think he is coming over later"
PL "Oh is he? He told me he is working later"
Me "nope, we have plans"
PL "WHAT? Who is this?"
Me "tiger pug, his girlfriend. Is everything ok? Can you get Michael to ring me"
PL "IM HIS WIFE. GO AWAY"

One digit wrong on the number i dialled. Got through to a house with a scottish lady who sounded like his mum. Who was married to a man called Michael.

I did ring back to explain, i felt awful, but she just hung up on me. Sorry Michael!!

FetchezLaVache · 17/04/2014 14:32

The toad/frog in the toilet is an easy one to solve. Our neighbour used to get frogs in her downstairs (front of house) toilet. Dh would have to go and shoo them out for her of her dh wasn't around. The outlet pipe had a gap round it and once it was sealed, they didn't have a problem. You don't have to have water in your garden for frogs either. Ours live under the gaps in our raised veg bed and under our shed, which was built on old sleepers. They like the damp and dark there. It's great fun frog spotting here :)

nicename · 17/04/2014 14:16

Lion, she was probably having a poo behind your bins (sorry to be so gross but better than a mad knifelady!)

thenumberseven · 17/04/2014 14:07

A few years ago I had in my kitchen(not where I live now) some shelves, it was a metal frame and the shelves were very thick smoked glass. I had items on display on the shelves, teapots, jugs, unusual dishes and such.

On the second shelf from the top I had two big blue and white china water jugs, one was blue with white flowers and the other white with some blue swirls

One morning when I got up I placed a candle holder between the jugs and turned around to boil the kettle. There was an almighty noise and the shelf with the jugs was shattered on the floor. I was shaken but went on to clear stright away all the time thinking how fortunate that the shelf and heavy jugs had not broken anything else as they fell.

I cleared the glass and china and relised that there was not one piece of china from the blue with white flowers jug. I put all the pieces together and the white jug with blue swirls was all completely there but not a trace of the other jug. I had placed the candle holder squarely between the two jugs so know it was there.
Jug never reappeared neither whole or in pieces

Lioninthesun · 17/04/2014 13:14

I have another weird one. I was about 30 weeks pg and went to a BBQ at a friend's house nearby. When I walked home alone it was dark and a I walked up my front garden path I nearly fell over a florescent orange bag (like a paper boys) and as I bent down to pick it up a lady appeared from behind my bins! She said something like "Oh I didn't mean to startle you, sorry!" and grabbed her bag and walked off very fast. She was mid 40's and looked like a thinner version of the mother in the Goonies! I've never figured out what she was up to, but wondered if she was sleeping in my porch (which would have been fine, actually and if she had asked I'd have let her) but it did give me a bit of a shock as I was living alone at the time. Next morning my friends made me call the police who were very annoyed I hadn't called at the time as someone could have been in my house with a knife Shock. Needless to say they weren't and I haven't seen her since.

thenumberseven · 17/04/2014 12:58

murmuration
One of the tiny diamonds was also missing as one of the little gold claws that held them was slightly bent like on mine, however I can't remember if it was the same one.

This happened about 25 years ago and it occassionally comes to mind. I must ask my now grown men sons if they remember.
I expect they will as I was so angry at them and later apologised

Longdistance · 17/04/2014 12:47

I actually had a mystery solved a few weeks ago, that had been bugging me for about 25+ years.

I always had a dream about going to the circus in s specific location. This location was the grounds of a large local factory. I had this dream quite often.

I'm a member of a fb page, that is to do with my home town. Someone piped up about a circus being on these grounds. Omg, I dreamt of that circus, and must have gone as a very young child, as my db piped up saying he'd been, so I must have gone to this circus after all.
