Tell me about a random unsolved mystery in your life....

....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

Children dumping their packed lunches before their parents find they haven't eaten them.

Beaver - it's a noted phenomenon

There's even a book

Choccyjules · 17/04/2014 21:57

Lavender maybe the sisters were later adopted separately and she was given a new name? That would explain her emotions about her name and her sister? Sad Just a thought, as you said they were fostered.

My mystery is very un-woo, but very frustrating - on 3 seperate occasions we have had a very high pitched wining noise (quite loud) eminating from somewhere in our kitchen. We have turned off all appliances and even the electricity at the fuse box, to no effect. Eventually it just stops, but lasts 2+ hours. We have lived in the house 12 years and it only started a couple of months ago. We did have the lighting circuit rewired last summer, and new kitchen lights fitted, but it doesn't seem to be them.

I also remember flying as a child. In my case it's just a case of very vivid and realistic dreams because I still have those dreams now. I'm often unsure if things really happened or if it was a dream and when you're a kid flying to school seems like a thing that could really happen.

I don't think I've ever told anyone in RL this, but one night, as I left my DS's school, I suddenly thought "There's going to be a crash tonight". I had my DD in the car, so checked her seat belt was done up properly. We drove an hour home, with no problems. I then got a phone call from DS to say that his friend had been killed in a crash, on the way back to school, in the exact spot that I had the thought :(

For months after, I constantly asked myself why I had had the thought, but didn't get enough info to do something about it?

Have spent the day half hoping my grandmother's ring would appear Sad

My late, much loved cat used to always take up position in the window 5 minutes before I got home and then would be mewing at the door as I opened it. It didn't matter whether I was early or late, if ExH was at home he said he knew when I was arriving because of our cat

alemci · 17/04/2014 21:06

yes some of our guinea pigs used to react when they were near home in the car after being on their holidays at our relativesSmile.

could they smell the air?

somewherewest · 17/04/2014 21:05

DH's late grandmother had a breakdown as a young woman (before her marriage) and was institutionalised. Although she only remembered being institutionalised for a year, there are actually seven years 'missing' from her life. Its really strange. She had no siblings and her parents are long since dead, so there's no else to fill in the blanks.

AdeleNazeem · 17/04/2014 21:03

Viva ...my cats do that too. weird!

AdeleNazeem · 17/04/2014 21:02

fascinating stories. and some very sad ones about the missing people Sad

I am waiting for a green beanbag frog to appear out of nowhere and land on my head now though!

VivaLeBeaver · 17/04/2014 20:46

How does my dog know when dh is getting home 2 or 3 mins before he gets here? Its a busy road so its not like he hears a car and assumes its dh. DH comes back at quite different times - anywhere between 5:30 and 7:30.

Can he pick up on his particular car from a distance?

BomChickaMeowMeow · 17/04/2014 20:38

That's very interesting Laska. I love this thread.

Not exactly a mystery, but the pictionary posts have reminded me.

My best friend as a child was the daughter of my parents' friends, only three months older than me in age, we spent a lot of time together, very close friends.

I don't remember this but we've been told that when our parents would play pictionary, and we were just dinky things but wanting to "play", think around 3 or younger, no actual drawing skills whatsoever, just scribbles. Parents would tell one of us something, we'd go to the board, scribble for a few seconds, and the other one would guess it immediately. Every time. Somehow our scribbles had meaning to each other, I find it fascinating now.

Also friend and I looked nothing alike. Really nothing similar about us. But from the time we were about 12 through being teenagers, strangers would ask us if we were identical twins. Specifically identical. We'd say no, then they'd ask fraternal, sisters, cousins, etc. No relation whatsoever anywhere. We always found it bizarre! If it had been one person, wouldn't have thought anything of it, but it was several people over many years.

I have one more from this week but I need to figure out how to upload a picture.

Laska42 · 17/04/2014 20:29

If you 'know' the phone is going to ring and its a landline there is a technical explanation, its about the electrical pulses some of the older types of telephone exchange send before the phone ringer is activated and some people's ability to hear the very high frequency signal. My Dad was a telephone engineer and he told me about it, as i always know too (or did until i ive lost the very very high frequency of my hearing). seeing Dad at the weekend... ill ask him and report back ..

lavenderhoney · 17/04/2014 20:26

Years ago, when under 10 I met two girls who were sisters at an activity I did nearly every day. They had been fostered. They had unusual names. A few years later I saw one of the girls and said hello.

She denied knowing me, her name, and that she had a sister. She was incredibly upset at me saying " hello, its x isn't it?" And shouted at me in a very distressed way she wasn't x:(

I've often wondered about them and was sorry I'd upset someone without intent.

And my dm always told me she'd taken me from a pram outside the supermarket Shock I've always assumed she was joking...

BomChickaMeowMeow · 17/04/2014 19:58

The childhood flying thing is very interesting. I think it must be a part of the brain development in young children that alters perception sometimes.

I have always had falling down the stairs dreams, though not for a while now, and they are very common- something to do with the heart I think as you fall asleep.

I do occasionally fly in lucid dreams though, even now, and that started as a child. Great fun.

My great great grandmother died in 1914. She was in service at the time and is buried in the local churchyard. From the family bible and as far as we know, all her immediate descendants lived in the east of england. There are very few alive now that we know of.

Move forward 90 years, and my now dh and I move to Yorkshire within 30 mins drive of the grave. We go to the village and find her final resting place. On her overgrown grave is a jam jar with dead flowers in it.

I'd love to know who left it there. The thought of possibly other descendants visiting her that we don't know about is mysterious and exciting in equal measure.

RevoltingPeasant · 17/04/2014 19:31

Adele Shock

And Flowers for the missing chef and pen friend. How awful.

Viva that is amazing! Could the wind have taken it? I'm guessing not, being a beanbag?

Thanks for all your intriguing stories everyone, I just started this for a laugh but some really good ones on here!

I haven't got the tape any more, no- I lost track of it over the years, and think it must have got chucked out with all the other obsolete cassettes, dustarr.

SummerRain · 17/04/2014 19:20

I've flown hundreds of times in my life, started when I was a baby so never had any nervousness about flying or anuthing. But twice in my life I've had a feeling of utter dread getting onto a plane, so intense and overwhelming it's hard to describe... I just knew I shouldn't be there and I was in danger.

The first time the ane we were on went on fire and had to make an emergancy landing.

The second was 9/11 and we were escorted in to land by fighter jets.

Had flown in between and have flown since and never had that feeling apart from those two flights.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/04/2014 18:42

When I was a kid I had a little frog beanbag toy.

I was out with my brother in a playing field near our house and I threw it up in the air. Straight up, we watched it go up and it never came down. We searched for it for ages as did my dad. Never found it.

There wasn't anything it could have landed in to hide it, no trees, no bushes. I was 6yo so couldn't have thrown it far even if it hadn't gone directly up. No rabbit holes, nothing but grass as far as you could see and it was a large frog. Probably 8"x8".

I'd also love to know what happened to my mums good friend from when she was doing her nurses training, they were best friends for years and my mum became close to her family and vice versa. After her training my mum returned to her home town but they remained in contact, visting each other and attending each other's weddings and so on.

At some point they lost touch, I'm not sure how it happened, but in the days before Facebook Etc I suppose it was easier to loose contact with people, even good friends.

When the inernet took off we started to try and find her, we've scoured Facebook, Friends reunited the works. I even looked on the electoral roll but to no avail, we know where she was living in the early 80's and her married name at the time but it's like she doesn't exist now. We've come to conclusion that she's either left the country and gone somewhere like Australia, divorced her first husband and remarried which would explain why we can't find her under he married or maiden name, or that she may even be dead.

Either way it's a mystery.
