Tell me about a random unsolved mystery in your life....

....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

When I moved house, I kept hearing the sound of a grandfather clock ticking. I didn't have a clock and I checked if it was the plumbing etc. Never found out what it was but it did spook me. Eventually, it stopped happening.

I once only once got a mysterious valentine. It was written in a strange language and I have never been able to decipher it. It was years ago, when I was about sixteen, and I never found out who sent it.

SallyannFanackapan · 20/04/2014 12:36

...then again I could be being naive..
Perhaps sil did lock them in, and they were entertained by middle aged people while they were locked away?
Curious!!

SallyannFanackapan · 20/04/2014 12:33

Aubergine & Face I took that to mean the boys saying they'd been locked in & only let out by their "old" babysitters 15 mine earlier, when Hairy knew the sitters to be family & unlikely to do that, and not old..?

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 20/04/2014 12:14

Hairy we are all confused about the babysitter post...can you give more detail?

nicename · 20/04/2014 12:09

I assumed the DSs were her sisters?

auberginesrus · 20/04/2014 11:24

Am very confused about the babysitter post - how would you not know who was babysitting your DCs? More details required!

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 20/04/2014 10:51

When we lived in our last house, a bowl had gone missing, I assumed it had been broken and thrown away, we had a lodger with us at that point.

Then one day after the lodger had moved out, it just appeared on the side in the kitchen. OH wasn't in at the time, and said I must have done it. I know I didn't, it was weird.

HauntedNoddyCar · 20/04/2014 10:25

PecanSandy - the egg may have fallen out of a nest onto soft ground and been picked up by your cat. I have seen mine carry eggs in their mouths and negotiate the cat flap holding one.

Actually that reminds me. We went away overnight leaving my cats at home. Also left at home was a sagging helium balloon. Still just about aloft but not bumping the ceiling.

It wasn't there when we got back. It wasn't there deflated in a corner when we moved so I can only assume one of the cats took it out through the catflap.

Many years ago when I was a teenager my dm and myself went round to her friends house for a chat and a cuppa. Dm's friend had some tarot cards that she had cut out of the paper and suggested we do them.

It was only for a laugh as none of us knew what we were doing with them, anyway we only did them for a short while and after a while we stood up to go home. We lived down a hill and round a corner from friends house.

As we were walking away, both dm and myself heard footsteps behind us, turned round-no one there! We definitely heard them, we walked a bit quicker and dm put the key in the door and we both felt 'someone/something' push on the door, as if to gain entry.

I can't explain what it was, but we both definitely heard and felt the same things.

lottieandmia · 20/04/2014 09:07

PecanSandy - I reckon rats could be responsible for moving your eggs. They can somehow transport them to all kinds of places - they are unbelievably agile.

Hairylegs47 · 20/04/2014 08:52

Just who were the 2 middle aged babysitters who used to look after DS1 and DS2 when they were about 3 and 4? The only babysitters we had were my SIL and her bf, they would lock the boys in their room only letting them out 15 mins before we returned.

RockinHippy · 20/04/2014 04:36

sort of large pigs trotter

RockinHippy · 20/04/2014 04:35

Many years ago, after a night out at a friends house watching zombie movies - I came home late & alone and worse for wear to find the bloodied stump of a severed limb poking out from beneath my sofa Shock When I finally plucked up the courage to take a proper look - it turned out to be the very large front leg of a pig - sort of large pigs & then some.

Okay, I did have pet cats, but it was a hell of a size & weight for them to bring home as a a late night giftHmm & even if they did bring it home, living in a London suburb, where they hell they got it from will be forever a mysteryConfused

What my dad did in the 70's, why he split with his first wife but remained friends with her and why their son, my half brother was adopted by his mum's parents. No one seems to have the answers to these questions and there's no one I can ask

Marcipex · 20/04/2014 01:02

Single mothers were treated so harshly, weren't they Rhondajean.

RhondaJean · 20/04/2014 00:56

Marci you've reminded me of one.

I'd like to know who my great great gran was.

She appeared in Glasgow from Skye with a little boy in the 1880s. She married and had several more children but no one h ever known where in Skye she came from, if she was married, widowed or disgraced and had to leave the island, or how she ended up in Glasgow.

Marcipex · 20/04/2014 00:52

I'd like to know what happened to my great -aunts baby girl.

My great aunt married a GI and went to live in the US.
They were quite hard up. He was not pleased when she immediately became pregnant, but she was ecstatic.

The baby was born in hospital. As was usual at the time, the baby was put in the nursery at night so the mothers could rest.

In the morning, my great aunt was told her baby had died overnight.
She was never told a reason for the death, she never saw the body, she never had a death certificate and the funeral was apparently held without her. She thinks she was heavily sedated for some time and kept in hospital.

Shortly after this, her husband the GI left her for another woman. Alone in the US, she returned to England.

I don't believe the baby had died. I think it was stolen for adoption with the fathers collaboration.
This dawned on my great aunt many years later but she said it was too late.
We will never know, but I wonder about that baby girl and what really happened.
Her name was Joy.

Sukebind · 20/04/2014 00:29

Also mystery, not mysery. Sorry.

Sukebind · 20/04/2014 00:27

Sorry - I mean, people could not have known how to spell it. Have hosted an Easter party for many screaming children today and am quite tired!

Sukebind · 20/04/2014 00:25

BorisJohnson - I don't have a Janet and Roy story but a couple of years we got a Christmas card from 'Peter, Prem' and a load of children. Neither me or DH knew who they were. The address was exactly correct and they had spelled my name correctly - it is a variation of a name usually spelled one way. People who only knew us vaguely would not have known who they were. I asked my parents in case they could think who it could be. They found it intriguing so as a joke I sent another card to them from the mysery family. It sent them mad with wondering as now the mystery was complicated by the fact this family knew them too. I sent them an Easter card from them and then the following Christmas I had a card printed by an on-line card company. They were completely mystified and started asking loads of friends if they knew them. Blush

I was going to wind it all up into some sort of punchline at which point I would confess - although the original Peter and Prem would remain a mysery. Unfortunately, I just can't think how to do it. I was too busy this Christmas to send a fake card (I had a fake Round Robin in rough draft which would have been a give-away as it was obviously fake and my parents find RRs hilarious) and I had also planned to send them an obviously 'joke' anniversary card for a significant wedding anniversary, but I didn't get around to it. I have been a sloppy prankster and now I have confused them with no real purpose...

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 20/04/2014 00:03

Marking my place to add a few of my own tomorrow. I've sat up and read every comment and now too tired to add my own!
Some of these are so sad, scary, creepy & just bloody weird!

Nassau · 19/04/2014 22:57

DD2 (4) can come out with really 'grown up' phrases sometimes. We joked that 'shes been here before' but never in front of her.
DH was picking her up from montessori a few weeks ago and her teacher was telling DH about her 'quirks' that day. DH laughed, turned to DD2 and said "you've been here before, haven't you". DD, very seriously, looked at him and said "yes, but it was a long, long time ago" Shock

hellymelly · 19/04/2014 22:43

Actually post it notes were around in the 70s. My neighbour knew the man who invented them, i remember him showing some to me, and it was around 1976.

thenightsky · 19/04/2014 21:54

Remembered another one...

When DS was little and his big sister was keen on Claires Accessory type shops, he always used to gaze at the hair bobbles, alice bands etc and say.... 'I had these when I used to be a girl'
