Things that you used to do as a child repetitively and now think "WTF?!"

The hot chocolate thread got me thinking about this. For some reason, I used to tip a full glass of water onto the carpet, the same patch of carpet, every single day. No clue why. I was asked to stop, but I just did it anyway Confused

I ate chalk too, like the chalk kids draw with. Both of these things happened until high school age?!

Anything utterly random and repetitive you may have done?

Oh my goodness, I'd forgotten about sewing my fingers. I so did that!

And I used to race cars. I'd pick a spot up ahead and see if I could reach it before the car coming up behind. A great way of making a walk more interesting.

Aaaahhhh I see what you mean Daley Smile

I found a 4 leaf clover once when I was about 11, put it in a carrier bag I had with me and it fell out the bottom and I didn't notice :(:(:(

Another raw sausage and bacon eater here Blush

I used to chew the wooden headboard of my bed - I can still remember the lovely feeling of my teeth sinking into it.

I also used to sniff light bulbs - they had a pleasant, hot smell - until I burnt the end of my nose.

Oh my god. I was a crisp paste lover. I have lived in shame for so many years, I can't believe I'm no longer alone.

I had an elaborate system where I would make mini 'towers' of soggy crisps interspersed with chewed crisps. Walkers cheese and onion was my preference. Also enjoyed filling hula hoops with chewed hula hoops.

My god it is so unbelievably disgusting but I'm totally craving a crisp paste tower now! Grin

I love this thread, it has brought back so many childhood memories.

I went through a phase of taking my bedclothes off the bed and sleeping on the floor. God knows why.

When I was about 10 I used to imagine I was lying down in an aeroplane seat, taking off to get myself to sleep. I didn't actually go in a plane until I was 27.

There was a field behind our house and I used to spend hours sitting on the grass, amongst the cow pats, searching for 4 leaf clovers. I was very proud of my set of three, pressed 4 leaf clovers. I kept them for years. I can't sit on grass without searching for them.

I also had a phase of pulling my hair out, strand by strand. It was very satisfying, especially if it was a very thick, rough hair. I now know that it a very subtle type of self harm. I still do it now, especially if I am particularly anxious.

I am also a skin picker, especially on my heels. It bloody hurts when you do it too much but very difficult to stop. Also another form of self harm.

Worryingly, I think I did most of the above.

I was a chewer. Paper, book page bottoms (only bottom edges mind), pencils, crayons, bath sponges, sponge doll stuffing, finger nails, finger skin, Barbie's feet and pretty much anything else I could get my teeth into. My mum insists I ate stones and worms too.

Anyone else find that green pencils tasted peppery? I wonder what was in that green paint?

Going to have to suck a flannel and run upstairs on all fours when I next get the chance.

DaleyBump · 18/09/2013 22:59

Omg fish food. I loved the smell and actually bought a tub of fish food to keep in my room to sniff Hmm

Steffanoid · 18/09/2013 22:58

ooh forgot about flannel sucking and bathwater drinking

AutumnStar · 18/09/2013 22:57

I'm a sponge eater. The smell of a new sponge makes me want to chomp it even now.

Also a plug drinker. And I used to sneakily eat fish food. Only the flakes though.

I still do the squashing bread into a ball thing. Only white bread though.

ConfusedPixie · 18/09/2013 22:55

I sewed my fingers too. My mum had to remove all sewing stuff from my reach, which was difficult as she was a cross stitcher so it was everywhere in the house.

Cleo it wasn't sore! It's just the top layer of skin, but I found it so fascinating! I also used to walk about with badges through the skin on my fingers. I was so cool.

TessTackle · 18/09/2013 22:53

Pat I did the bread ball thing! So did my sister; I'm going to remind her when she's home from uni so we can do it again Grin

CleoBrown · 18/09/2013 22:53

Aaaaah Taz you've reminded me if the vein one - putting your finger on a vein and pushing the blood back behind the valve so you had an 'empty' vein in your arm/wrist :/ urgh!

ConfusedPixie · 18/09/2013 22:53

Hazel, I also have a Blankie. I'd like to say that being younger than you is my excuse, but I am not that much younger! I also am curled up on bed atm with my trigger as Dp is at his mates house. Though tigger is usually on the bed somewhere! He's not even a childhoods toy, Dp won him in a grabber arcade game when we were teens and he has moved everywhere with me since (tigger, not Dp unfortunately!)

Sometimes I used to keep spitting into a cup until there was enough to drink Blush it wasn't even nice.

TessTackle · 18/09/2013 22:52

Poo sticks just slayed me Grin

CleoBrown · 18/09/2013 22:52

steffanoid I have 3 dogs in my house at any one time who want me to lead them around and they lick my fingers, so you're not alone in that!

Dead pigeon :) I think DHs has something to do with a dead rat but I've never got to the bottom of it!

daley ouch! Sewing fingers on purpose, how on earth did you do that?

Taz1212 · 18/09/2013 22:52

What is it with eating printed paper!?!?! We used eat bits of newspaper- yuck! Horrible! In high school we used to bring in a box of pins and see who could thread to most through the skin on their fingers. WTH?

Nest0fVapors · 18/09/2013 22:51

I used to love doing the crisp thing, it went all cold, greasy and lush!

Bloodsocks · 18/09/2013 22:50

OK,I'm going to admit to a disgusting one...I used to spit in my bowl of ice cream and mix it in to make it runnier quicker.

Steffanoid · 18/09/2013 22:45

I used to eat dried egg noodles still do
pretend I was a dog? and dleep in cardboard boxes I made dad get and go down the stairs on all fours

and I used to sleep in my new shoes including wellies!

solveproblem · 18/09/2013 22:45

I loved eating serpentines at parties.

And if they ever forgot to lock the arts and crafts cupboard at nursery I'd sneak in and steal some black card to eat. It had to be black, didn't like the other colours.

Oooh, and I'd secretly eat butter mixed with sugar at home when no one was around.

EduCated · 18/09/2013 22:41

Oh and you know Refreshers, the fizzy round ones in the tubes, I'd always have to run them on the end of my nose before I ate them.

Bought some a couple of months ago. Still had to do it Grin
