Things that you used to do as a child repetitively and now think "WTF?!"

The hot chocolate thread got me thinking about this. For some reason, I used to tip a full glass of water onto the carpet, the same patch of carpet, every single day. No clue why. I was asked to stop, but I just did it anyway Confused

I ate chalk too, like the chalk kids draw with. Both of these things happened until high school age?!

Anything utterly random and repetitive you may have done?

This is disgusting and i am thoroughly ashamed. I used to blow my nose on my baby sisters clothes. While she was wearing them. My two brothers thought it was hilarious. It was just convenient for me. I also used to pinch them so that when they cried i could comfort them and do it again.

Buswanker · 19/09/2013 00:00

Oh and my brothers friend regularly blew his nose on the carpet. He said he couldn't be bothered to get a tissue even thought the carpet of choice was further away than the bathroom where the tissue was and he had to lie down on the floor in the right position to do it.

I used to do lots of these especially sucking flannels, chewing paper, picking wall paper, sewing fingers, I also used to love dipping my fingers in melted candle wax letting it harden then peeling it off.

I have noticed that my dd (4.5) has started sucking the flannel, making dolls clothes from toilet paper and cleaning the tiles round the bath with her sponge Grin

Sparklyboots · 18/09/2013 23:58

God, I feel so normal.reading this,.it's ace. I flannel sucked, ate bits of books, chewed the skin off the side.of my nails. I had a narrator (still do) but also a.prompt: if I.ever notice the narration has stopped, I.ask myself, 'and what did Sparkly do then?' My brother and I ate Winalot dog biscuits dipped.in curry sauce for breakfast if my parents had got a take away the night before. I endlessly set up little predictive exercises along the lines.of, 'if I.reach the.lamppost before that car it means that x will be so'. I still.do that reflexively if there's a stressful unknown, e.g. get the job, get pregnant...

Still18atheart · 18/09/2013 23:58

I used to lick the underside of those leather fabric bookmarks.

I was fascinated and still am by indentations. Espeically ones on the carpet left by furniture anywhere really.

Buswanker · 18/09/2013 23:56

I knew a kid who ate dog biscuits it was my friends little sister. It entertained us for ages, we would feed her lots of my dad's puppies food and get her to bark like a dog. She voluntarily slept in their dog bed. When their mum came to pick them up from a sleepover she was not happy to find out she had shared a bed with six puppies and their mum, she had bits of fur stuck all over her.

My brother had a bogey collection on the end of his bed, I got jealous and started my own but eventually my mum found them and wiped them off.

I also knew a kid who collected farts in a jar. If you asked she would sometimes open it and you could sniff one.

I loved peeling PVA glue off my hands.

I also liked to pick the feathers out of pillows if they were sticking out and would hunt all over my pillow for feathers to pull out.

Pulling apart the cuffs on my school jumpers was lovely - I think lots of us did it and it must have driven our parents mad.

My parents had a pair of upholstered chairs with tassels. If you pulled the right bit of the tassel it would come apart. My parents now have a pair of upholstered chairs without tassels.

Charlottehere · 18/09/2013 23:55

Your all weird I never picked my nose an wiped it on parents orange sofa

MacaYoniandCheese · 18/09/2013 23:53

No, no, no. Tic-Tacs are 'tablets'. DB and I used to pretend to ration them out, OAP-style, to be taken at regular intervals throughout the day.

We also used to suck the coloured candy-coating off of smarties, until they were all white, and then put them back in the tube to enjoy later.

YY to finger sewing. The genesis of my life-long propensity for various minor self-mutilation projects.

ANomNomNom · 18/09/2013 23:49

Make a jam sandwich, eat all the crusts, then nibble the centre into the largest perfect circle.

Put a LOT of icing sugar on my weetabix and, if I could get away with it, add golden syrup. Mmm, I quite fancy some now

Nerfmother · 18/09/2013 23:46

Eat paper

Dismantle felt tips and suck the coloured insides

Swallow marbles and then regurgitate them ( trip to a and e for little sis)

And, sadly , I killed the tooth fairy. I was so terrified of her crawling into my ear that when she arrived I turned the pillow over really quickly and pounded it. Sorry.

DaleyBump · 18/09/2013 23:34

MyLovely, I used to pretend that the mallow inside a Milky Way was my "medicine" and I had to scoop it out with my pinky and eat it otherwise it wouldn't work.

MyLovelyMayoMammy · 18/09/2013 23:32

Lick batteries. My mum never did find out why all our remotes went rusty under the battery panel.
Sit on the back of any adult crouched or lying on tge floor. Whether I knew them or not.
Pretend my smarties were tablets. Other kids couldnt have them as they were dangerous.
Try to climb in the tv.
Pretend i was on my own tv show. I'd show off for my viewers by jumping really far or making myself cry with real tears.
Eating sweets or crisps off the floor OUTSIDE.
Making myself sneeze using matchsticks.
I was fascinated with my dads private area. He had to bath and dress in private otherwise I'd just stare and ask him lots of questions about it. Apparently I ran and hi fived him in the balls. :o

ToysRLuv · 18/09/2013 23:30

Daley: I used to imagine horse riding along roads and fields.

alltoomuchrightnow · 18/09/2013 23:29

oh yes! sewing fingers. and putting cactus spikes through them and then wondering why they got all infected and itchy

ToysRLuv · 18/09/2013 23:29

I used to eat hot choc powder straight out of the tub with a spoon.

I used to set myself weird challenges like "if there aren't 3 yellow cars parked along this street, then I shall have to sing Old McDonald had a farm really loudly". I would inevitably mumble/whisper instead of do the loud singing, though..

EduCated · 18/09/2013 23:16

Oh god, Daley, I did that too, especially with the central reservation on the motorway.

DaleyBump · 18/09/2013 23:11

Oh, and I always used to imagine a skateboarder doing tricks alongside the car. Like, on fences and curbs and other random objects Hmm

DaleyBump · 18/09/2013 23:10

Oh, another lightbulb sniffer here!!

DaleyBump · 18/09/2013 23:08

So you see what I mean Cleo? Grin

AnnaBegins · 18/09/2013 23:06

Oh gosh I was a flannel-sucking book-eating bread-squashing hair-chewer tooooo!

And I used to narrate my life like Hippo. Still do sometimes...

Shaky · 18/09/2013 23:05

Pva not ova, damned auto correct

CleoBrown · 18/09/2013 23:05

Sorry, got distracted! Time for bed I think

Shaky · 18/09/2013 23:05

Perhaps I should paint my feet with ova glue and pick that instead of my skin Grin

MartinPlattRGN · 18/09/2013 23:04

Did Terry Wogan issue some warning about upstairs water in the 80s? Or was that a lie my dad concocted to get me to stop sucking flannels/toothbrushes and doing the plug thing? (we got a new plug and it didn't hold enough water, but then my mum started buying those pumps of toothpaste and I could swig loads out of the top).

I used to chew foil. And eat snow, and washing powder.
