Things that you used to do as a child repetitively and now think "WTF?!"

The hot chocolate thread got me thinking about this. For some reason, I used to tip a full glass of water onto the carpet, the same patch of carpet, every single day. No clue why. I was asked to stop, but I just did it anyway Confused

I ate chalk too, like the chalk kids draw with. Both of these things happened until high school age?!

Anything utterly random and repetitive you may have done?

I did exactly the same thing retrohippy lol my sister used to hide hers under stickers on walls I just wiped them on the back of the bed!

I used to paste yogurt pots with pva glue and hide them in cupboards in the classroom then peel them out so I had a yogurt pot made of glue. Did this almost everyday for quite a while so don't know how my teacher never noticed!

I also picked wallpaper, the skin off my lips, feet and fingers. If ever I got a scab it would take months to heal. I still do all of these apart from wallpaper (but probably only because all the rooms in my house are painted not wallpapered!).

Loads more of these examples I used to do too! loved sucking flannels!

vladthedisorganised · 19/09/2013 11:00

I used to roll scraps of paper and foil into tubes, then pinch the ends closed at one end. Occasionally I'd try and join lots of bits of paper and foil together and make a long, thin tube which I thought was like a flute.
It always puzzled me why so many adults looked shocked and then relieved when I said "It's a flute" - years later I realised that it looked exactly like I was rolling large joints, which is a bit unnerving in a small child.
Needless to say, neither of my parents smoked anything at all, and I wouldn't have known what a joint looked like until many years later.

I used to...oh god I'm so weirded out by myself now. Blush

I used to eat my bed. I used to gnaw away at the wooden frame and eat it. Like some kind of demented beaver.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 19/09/2013 09:29

I used to wash my crisps. Because wet crisps tasted much nicer than dry crisps.

RetroHippy · 19/09/2013 09:10

I also used to pick my nose and wipe it down the back of my cabin bed! Then when we redecorated my mum found it all the day she was meant to be selling it and had to scrub off years of hardened bogies. She was not impressed.

Also used to suck on sponges/flannels, sleep upside down, pretend when I was getting a late night drink that I was collecting water in the desert to save my lover, but I only had my hands to carry it. I had to make my 'hand cup' as water tight as possible.

And each of my marbles had personalities and roles. I still refer to the biggest as The King and can't bring myself to get rid of them. I'd play with them for hours.

I'm pretty sure there were more...

Whenever we were driving somewhere and I saw a road sign saying how far away a town was I used to work out how long it would take til we got there.

If it said 35 miles and we were doing 70 mph I'd work out that it would take us half an hour and get really annoyed if it didn't actually take half an hour.

SlangKing · 19/09/2013 03:12

I went to a pre-junior school play group where we'd cut out plastecine shapes. I'd put flour (maybe it was chalk) on a shape then a matching shape on top to make a sandwich,,, which I'd eat. I must've eaten a few over days or even weeks cuz I ended up pretty ill. I have a vague recollection of eating them and of being in hospital but none at all of week(s) of losing weight, vomiting and doctor visits before I was sent for tests. I'd blocked my intestines. They somehow flushed it out without any surgery needed. 46 years later and that remains the only 'proceedure' ever performed on me. I was a reckless kid - at 7 or 8 we'd dig out the shingle between railway sleepers and lie under passing trains - demolish old houses before the pro's arrived. All kinds of stupid stuff but never more than the odd bruise or graze. Never a sports injury in my teens n 20's. Healthwise I've been very lucky. When it comes to things like raffles and dice games I have no luck at all - it's hard to win at Trivial P when you can't ever land on the 'pie' squares.

TeaCuresEverything · 19/09/2013 02:51

I used to drink cream, and if someone ever bought me a fruity smelling body lotion or gel I had to taste it before I used it.

I also used to scratch my pillow while I was falling asleep. it was full of holes.

I used to knot my hair into little tufts and pull it out.

wow I was special! aren't kids weird? I'm going to try and remember these next time ds does something that makes me Shock

Onesleeptillwembley · 19/09/2013 02:41

Eat minced beef raw. In the fridge, left out for half hour, if it was there, it was for the taking. Really odd considering the hot countries I lived in as a child. I still can see smell almost taste the attraction. The sensation is still with me now, if I think about it, the taste/ feel I can still experience. But faced with mince - no. How weird is that.

Longdistance · 19/09/2013 02:26

When my mum finished with her boxes of chocolates, I used to turn the little plastic tray upside down, and pretend I was using them as buttons on a checkout. Just weird.

The weirdest thing was that I ended up working for Sainsburys for a few years part time with college lol.

EssieEttie · 19/09/2013 02:17

I used to collect Chewitt wrappers and pretend they were money (the crinklier the better.) My friend collected the bobbly bits of rubber that appeared when rubbing out (no idea what she thought they were.)

I also used to make perfume out of rose petals and water, and chocolate by freezing hot chocolate powder and water. The ''perfume' always smelt eggy (didn't stop me sloshing it liberally about my person though) and the 'chocolate' just went mouldy. Happy days!

recall · 19/09/2013 01:46

melting crayons on the radiator pipe next to my desk at school, and then dipping the ends of my fingers into the wax. Id then let it dry, and tap them on the table

eating bread with loads of vinegar on it

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 01:29

stroking my arm or rocking my legs before falling asleep.

ToysRLuv · 19/09/2013 01:24

Juliet:I did that thing with imagining the riding along fields/roads, and also drawing imaginary horses and thinking of their names etc. Then drawing the stable with really detailed descriptions about everything. But mainly they were just my horses, so no other riders involved, as far as I remember. All my drawings from that period are cringy as hell.

ToysRLuv · 19/09/2013 01:20

alltoomuch: I used to do it until recently. No idea why I stopped. I will also mouth/mumble some words I'm thinking about and this used to be sometimes connected to the air writing (in cursive).. I sound like a right nutter now..

JulietBravoJuliet · 19/09/2013 01:16

Tear off bits of tissue, newspaper, books etc, screw it into a tight little ball and rub it between my fingers or under my fingernails still do this

I also used to narrate everything in my head still do this too

Used to sit looking out of the window in the car pretending I was galloping along on a horse. Every gateway or break in the pavement was a jump! My parents used to think I was cracking up, rocking back and forth! Thankfully, stopped doing this one Grin

Chewed the cuffs of every jumper, collars and neck as well. I've noticed ds does this a lot!

Had an imaginary riding school. I spent hours writing out descriptions of the ponies and allocating them to the riders for their lessons! I even had a lesson log so as I knew who'd ridden which pony the week before, and no pony was allowed to do more than 2 lessons in a row in case they got too tired! My favourite was Syd, a 14.2hh bright bay welsh cob who would put his nose in everybody's pockets looking for mints... I read way too many "Jill's Gymkhana" type books Grin

Bite my lip until it bled. I have a permanent scar which I still bite when I'm not thinking.

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/09/2013 01:15

always eating sweets dropped on pavement etc and once a pink toilet freshener that fooled me into looking like a marshmallow, on the toilet floor at the swimming pool, and was very sick for days, couldn't tell parents as I knew i'd get a bollocking for eating sweets off the floor, actually thought I was going to die..

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/09/2013 01:12

ToysRLuv I still do the air writing!

PowerPants · 19/09/2013 00:44

Pick the little woody bits out of woodchip wallpaper. Do they still even MAKE woodchip?

Use so much talc the whole bathroom floor went white. That one used to drive my mum crazy.

Only eat the pastry out of pork pies and give my dad the meat.

DaleyBump · 19/09/2013 00:36

I used to mix talc and water together to make "moisturiser". Hmm

Primrose123 · 19/09/2013 00:30

Wow, I can't believe how many of you ate paper and other weird things!

I didn't do anything too weird, but I did climb the stairs on all fours (and still do if I'm honest).

When I was in labour I was really thirsty but they wouldn't let me have a drink. DH gave me a cold flannel for my forehead, and I sucked the water out. It was fantastic.

MsPickle · 19/09/2013 00:21

MackYoni yy to Smarties!

Re 'bathroom water'- I had the same thing for a very long time until DMum said somewhere "oh you can drink that, it's on the mains". Turns out it's because lots of bathrooms were/are fed from tanks in the loft which may/may not be covered properly.

So now, I think every time, "mains or not"

Even in my own bathroom. Where I've lived for several years.

Drinking drinks made by mixing toothpaste and water. Yum yum yum.

ToysRLuv · 19/09/2013 00:15

I used to covertly "write" in the air random words or names I was thinking about.

headsspinningforachange · 19/09/2013 00:09

I use to chew the wood on my bed , it tasted like bananas Confused

I use to drink vinegar

I would get nosebleeds all the time & at night instead of going to my parents I would sit in the hall rocking back n forth until I fell asleep , they often found me asleep outside their room in a pool of blood , I did this for ten years at least once a week Hmm Confused Blush

ANomNomNom · 19/09/2013 00:08

I still do the dipping my fingers in melted wax thing. Confused

I think my kids are much less prone to pick, fiddle, break and generally mess with things than me and my brothers were.
