To be miffed at "Gift list for mother of the baby" enclosed in *Baby naming ceremony* invitation?

So some close friends (who married in church), but now claim to be atheist are holding a naming ceremony for their 8 month old first baby in an hotel.....

The invitation is beautiful with a map, timings "event closes at 11pm"?

The gift list ranges from £30-to £300, all items for the mother, cosmetics, trinkets, jewellery, pampering breaks, personalised hand-bound stationery and photo albums...

Anybody know the drill for these naming ceremonies? Are we supposed to guess a gift for the baby? Or just congratulate the mother for deciding on a name?

I have read this a dozen times and am staggered beyond belief-DP read it and fell into hysterics....

My gut tells me to go along with Jo Malone scented nappies or something.

Somebody please tell me this is not normal?!?!?!

And.......?

doubleshotespresso · 23/06/2013 13:41

Ok 2 bits of news, the first relates directly to this thread so that comes first:

We had a lovely dinner with our friends family and all grandparents to the baby and frineds DHs son, got lots of thank-yous and was a fun evening.... We got to dessert and friends DH says:

" we have had a good chat and though we are really happy with the whole thing mow, we have decided we are going to do something extra and really want you both to be part of it. " uhoh

So now the day after the naming ceremony, all of us will go to the church our friends got married in and there will be a proper Christening and yes myself and DH will be godparents. There will be no other guests aside from the grandparents. This is not only wonderful, but mindblowing as we thought they were not at all religious, but friend told us after all this, she realises maybe she does have faith in "things bigger than us" and really wants us actively involved with baby in the future.....

Floated home and slept like a baby myself.....

Woke up this morning and DP says " Shall we go for a drive?"

"Where to?"

"It doesn't matter- just get ready...."

" Hmmmmmm - we never just go for a drive though?"

"Please.just.get.ready."

Ok then.

Well said...

Double I've followed this thread from the jump and have wanted to tell you for a long time: you are my new hero. I'm not the most assertive personality but you've handled yourself with such grace and really stood up for your friend at a time when she needed someone like you, that I'm determined to become more comfortable being more assertive myself. You're an amazing friend and as knackered as you are over this whole thing, I hope you feel in your bones that you've done something life-changing for someone who really needed it, and she'll never ever forget it. You've given her space to get back on her feet while you handled the hard stuff. You are a rock star. I hope one day my DSD records me in secret bc she's proud of whatever it is I'm doing!!

The sister is so superficial it's a disgrace. I hope she declines the godmother gig and even better just stays in Oz!

LeoTheLateBloomer · 23/06/2013 13:22

Good grief it just keeps getting more shocking Shock

Are you the replacement godmother? Grin

BuiltForComfort · 23/06/2013 13:16

"the revised plans are painfully vanilla" Shock Shock. It's a naming ceremony for a baby, not the after party for the Rolling Stones. The sister is on another planet. You don't have to be a parent to understand that the plans were wildly inappropriate.

SauvignonBlanche · 23/06/2013 12:54

We need to see DPP's website!

SauvignonBlanche · 23/06/2013 12:54

maybe PND had caused her to "lose her party spirit and vision - cheeky bitch!! Angry

MidniteScribbler · 23/06/2013 12:52

Lavenderhoney · 23/06/2013 12:47

Sounds a good thing the dsis won't be coming!

Now, your news, please, you deserve something lovely happening to you:)

LoveBeingUpAt4InTheMorning · 23/06/2013 12:46

Who thought it could get more shocking

K8Middleton · 23/06/2013 12:43

Omg the sister has zero perspective or empathy! She is just so bloody determined to say "I am still right and you are all wrong!" Shock

Baby is better off without such vulgar grabby "special adult".

Now I can guess your news but would like you post it Grin

QOD · 23/06/2013 12:43

Om actual g! More commission for dsis? Cheek!

Ok am back - so sorry for not updating until now..... I went straight to bed when we returned last night and have had a busy morning to.......

So the update on the sister:

She apparently called our friend and said she wanted to say "sorry big time..... You are obviously tired and stuff" ........ Confused

In a nutshell, friends parents had a furious exchange with her earlier in the week where they expressed their disgust.....

Her defence/explanation follows:

She wants her niece to know "on arrival to the world" she can "dream big and enjoy the best in life if she wants to".... ?!?!?!?!

The planner does "loads of high profile stuff beautifully-I trust him implicitly".....

The "finders fee" is normal practice and does not see this is any of friends business...... "You do realise how lucky you were t get him don't you?"

She is devastated that DDP is now sacked-"am so let down, really thought you would appreciate my efforts".

She asked friend if she thought maybe PND had caused her to "lose her party spirit and vision?" ( I gasped at this one, friend is sick, battered not depressed!)

Sister asked if she thought it would be an idea for her to "take over remotely from Oz and see of she could iron all out with the DDP"

She was told NO so is now considering whether she wants to be a special adult/godmother. Friend actually told her she could not give a s* if she does or not. Friends DH told her of she does attend at all, to come, do the job with good grace or please stay away"....

She is "considering her travel plans as she feels her principles are in question here and it is uncomfortable for her..."

Sister is disappointed that our friend "doesn't seem to want the best for baby, the revised plans are painfully vanilla..."

So there you go lovely Mners- I wonder how many of you spit your tea out reading this? I am still reeling from this, but friends parents had the ultimate bombshell...

They are 99% certain all the brands with items on the gift list are represented by the sisters company, and that this "list" probably was intended to generate further revenue for her......

I have more (and much sweeter news) , which I am literally bursting to tell you too in a minute, just was bursting to tell you this much.....
