Years ago, I was in a relationship with a guy - we were both students at the time. We went to visit his widowed dad who lived a couple of hours away one Sunday. We weren't sure what we were going to do, so I made up a bit of a picnic to take with us - just some sandwiches, crisps, fruit and a flask of tea.

When we got to his dad's place, it was suggested that we went out for a bit of a drive, so BF, BFs dad, BF's brother and I piled in the car, and our drive took us to quite near where BFs other brother lived (lot's of relations here!) It was in the days before mobiles (old gimmer), so we stopped off and bought a cake, etc. to take with us to visit the brother, sister in law, and their little one. When we got there, they were all out in the garden, as it was a lovely day.

We stood and chatted for about 15-20 minutes, when it started to become apparent that we were not being invited in... Now, I know we had arrived unannounced, but this really was the norm in the family - we had surprise visitors a few times ourselves, whilst I was living with this BF. We were there for almost 3 hours, and at no point were we allowed to sit down, we weren't offered so much as a cup of coffee, and when I needed the loo, it was suggested I went down the road to the pub! BF actually took out our picnic in an attempt to shame them into offering us something. Nothing....

Our flat is often untidy, with laundry hanging about, etc., but surely this place couldn't have been that much of a tip that I couldn't even be allowed to use the loo!! BFs dad was so mortified by this son's behaviour, he took the rest of us to a restaurant for dinner, and didn't invite the brother, sil or child. In the 5 years I was with said BF, we only visited once more (pre-arranged) and were only offered one cup of tea each in a 4 hour visit. They were very strange, and exceptionally mean!

It's largely why I now constantly offer guests food and drinks at our house!!

I know, just wrong wrong wrong! I knew they were a bit hard up but this was beyond ridiculous. Wonder if they got more if they had the squits upset stomach!

Shock scrumdiddlydoo

anyone else wondering how on earth one is meant to manage with two sheets of toilet paper after a poo?!

scrumdiddlydoo · 24/04/2012 18:44

When I was younger, I remember going round my friend's house for the first time. I needed the loo and asked where it was. My friend's mum then asked if I was having a wee or a poo. Being young and a bit shocked I just answered the question, saying I was only having a wee. At this point, she went into a cupboard in the lounge and brought out a loo roll. She ripped off ONE sheet of the roll and gave it to me. I remember just looking from my friend to her mum, not knowing what to do or say. To break the silence, my friend piped up - 'Yeah, you get one for a wee and two for a poo'. I didn't go back.

I had some reaaly important work to do today for a big meeting tomorrow. Thanks to you lot, I've been sitting here reading all these. Sad

On the upside, I've activated bookmarks Grin

Ooh! Just remembered the time my friend invited me round for a sleepover. I think we'd been out clubbing and then stayed at hers afterwards.

I went straight round to hers from work at about 6ish. We were only about 18 and having tea at other people's houses was pretty much the norm if you went round after work or whatever. Got round there and she and her parents had just sat down to eat. No food for me. They looked shocked when I said I hadn't eaten yet and made me some toast.

I was sleeping on the airbed in my friends room. Blew it up before we went out, but she didn't get any bedding out, so I presumed her Mum was probably going to bring some in or something. We stumbled in freezing cold in the early hours of the morning, at which point my friend handed me a blanket. That was it, a small fleece blanket. No pillow, nothing else. It was bloody freezing, especially as her SDad refused to turn the heating on.

I didn't get breakfast in the morning either. Fairly minor, but they're the sort of people that pride themselves on being hosts Confused

Confused That's bonkers! did you just sit there and accept your fate?

Kendodd · 22/04/2012 20:28

I was invited round to someones flat once. A man I had met a few times, nothing romantic, just friends. When I got there he opened the door very glad to see me, welcomed me is and showed me to a seat in the hall, next to another friend he'd invited round for the evening and gave us a magazine each. He disappeared through another door, I sat round reading my magazine for a bit and then went home.

ifeelloved · 22/04/2012 18:56

Brilliant. It has taken me most of the day to read this!

scrumdiddlydoo · 22/04/2012 18:04

These have made me laugh more than anything has in a long time and I'm not even half way through yet, yay!!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 22/04/2012 16:58

Omg! At least my friend who goes on about having ocd does actually make me feel ashamed of my house keep her place spotless

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 22/04/2012 16:56

/chortle/ at fluffi

tutu100 · 22/04/2012 16:53

I once had a friend who went on about how OCD about cleanliness and tidiness she was (I'm not - tidy that is, my house is clean) so I was always a bit embarrassed about her coming round to mine. One day she invited me round to her's for a change. My jaw dropped when I went in. She had dogs and there was newspaper all over the floor and dog shit quite literally everywhere! The smell was awful. I couldn't believe that she'd gone on about how her house had to be immaculate all the time. This wasn't just an off day the amounts of poo must have been weeks worth.

I declined all offers of food and drink and left as soon as I could after an acceptable amount of time (I don't know why I was concerned about looking rude).

She didn't mention the state of her home at all, so made no excuses or anything. Just acted as normal whilst stepping over piles of shit.

We are still friends now, and she's not got the dogs anymore so her house isn't full of shit, but she does still comment on how she has to clean all the time and how my house is comfortable and lived in AKA a mess! I just smile whilst thinking whilst my house is messy at least my floors are clean and it smells nice.

fluffiphlox · 22/04/2012 13:26

Dead, dead. And never called me mother :(

BigBirdsFriend · 22/04/2012 09:32

So sad
Sad

MNHubbie · 21/04/2012 22:53

I thought I'd found a new one to replace this but I was wrong. Now both have died.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 21/04/2012 17:49

I know, I keep checking back hoping for more (and wondering if this will make mn talk round up!)

MNHubbie · 21/04/2012 12:46

Has this finally died?

Surely not.

I wish I had a story I could reproduce in a public forum... or any at all.

MNHubbie · 19/04/2012 21:11

Nice shirt Jeely

CharleyFarley82 · 19/04/2012 04:35

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This has kept me going through the 3 hourly night feeds of my 4mo (argh!)

Very entertaining. I'm afraid (and rather relieved) that I have nothing to add though :)

FarelyKnuts · 19/04/2012 00:50

Jeely I am loving the fact that it is being suggested as a toddler tshirt

JeelyPiece · 19/04/2012 00:09

You could be more subtle MNHubbie and wear this!

Brilliant thread, I can't believe there are so many people out there behaving so oddly.
