One idle google and 10 minutes later dd and I have a pan full for lunch, it's lovely.

It was bad enough finding out about cleaning washing machines, and Veet to unclog hairy plug holes.... and now you failed to tell me this Angry

Oven cleaning

Put 1 tablespoon of caustic soda into 500ml of hot water in a plastic bucket or large pyrex container. Put the soda into the water, not the water onto the soda. Wear thick ruber gloves and swab the inside of the oven with the mixture. Put some plastic down to protect the floor if you think you might drip onto it. Leave it until a small test patch wipes clean with a plastic saucepan scourer. The length of time is the most important bit, only a filthy oven will need a stronger solution of caustic.

When the caustic hs softened the dirt wipe it off with a plastic scourer and rinse the inside well. You really don't want residue caustic dripping on your food. Finally wipe the inside of the oven with 1 tablespoon of bicarb of soda in 1/2 pint of water. This will make the oven easier to clean next time.

  • soak oven shelves overnight in water and washing up liquid and a good dash of bleach.
  • sprinle salt immediately onto any spills, it might help to not burn so easily.

I didn't click the top result at least.

Honeydragon · 27/02/2012 19:23

Gets off all the product build up Viv, if you're like my mum and use a litre of straightening spray at a time Grin

We have a alcohol spare fridge. Does this now mean I can earn a few bob on the side, letting it out to tortoises ?

ViviPru · 27/02/2012 19:17

People clean hair straighteners? Confused

Honeydragon · 27/02/2012 19:16

Surely all the Veet would do is leave with less hirsute smooth spiders? Grin although it least you'd see them glinting in the moonlight

YY to conditioner for leg shaving I do that

ApocalypseCheeseToastie has ensure I always use laundry liquid to clean my floors as its great on grease and smells lovely.

Oh and a drop of fabric conditioner in water is ideal to wipe over your hair straightener plates to clean them.

All these gems in one place - DH is soup mad so will have to give some of these a try!!!

ClaretCake · 27/02/2012 19:07

Shudders at your bravery with the cup thing Strangeways

If our beasties stayed down the plughole I'd be happy but they don't... hmmm... maybe wash them down with veet; now there's an idea.

StrangewaysHereICome · 27/02/2012 19:02

In my defence I only did the hairspray thing in my younger days when I lived in a flat overrun with fecking enormous spiders that no cup would contain. I do now escort them to the bottom of the garden in a cup or wash them down the plughole

ClaretCake · 27/02/2012 19:01

I know, sorry Chandon but we get the the scariest arachnid beasties here and they just look at you all defiant like... would happily pay your spiderman to come and remove them humanely but...

Chandon · 27/02/2012 18:56

hmm, don't like the spider one as it unnecessarily kills spider in a horrible way.

Me, I pay Ds1 one pound for the removal of a large spider Grin (he hates any animal being killed or hurt, even insects, so he catches them very gently and releases in garden.)

Now there's a tip!

ClaretCake · 27/02/2012 18:53

Jeez!!! I've got the cough from hell and have just nearly died of asphyxiation laughing/choking at 'nunsnet' !

StrangewaysHereICome · 27/02/2012 18:49

Grin @ nunsnet!

whattodoo · 27/02/2012 18:48

Mumsnetting, not nunsnetting. You knew what I meant.

StrangewaysHereICome · 27/02/2012 18:48

I knew the spider one, I did, I did, I did

whattodoo · 27/02/2012 18:46

I mentioned the banana thing to DP. He showed mild disinterest.
I told him about red bras and within a milisecond he said "what if the t-shirt gets wet?"
Then he said "you're nunsnetting, aren't you?"

StrangewaysHereICome · 27/02/2012 18:45

Good lord I turn my back for a minute and you're all at it again. I will just add that I have done my maintenance wash today and dishwashered every bit of the cooker that comes off and scrubbed the inside with Oven Pride. I thought at least I could have a day off to relax in the glow of my new found house cleaning pride, but no you won't have it.

ClaretCake · 27/02/2012 18:45

Posted these little gems earlier but they got lost in the abyss of 'chat' threads... hadn't seen this thread so thought I'd tag them on here... if I may...Blush

? Squeaky doors stop squeaking when you rub a little bit of neat washing up liquid onto the hinges ? better than smelly WD40 so especially good for bedroom doors.

? If you want your house to smell lovely and fresh, rub the radiators with a piece of wet kitchen towel that has been dabbed in fabric softener ? very subtle and great for in between housework days!

? If you?ve still got any muslin squares that actually survived the baby years without being stained, they make great pressing cloths (dry or damp) for ironing stuff like school trousers and jumpers ? stops the wool mix ones going shiny.

? Spiders are much easier to catch and dispatch if you zap them with hairspray ? it sticks the hairs on their legs together and they then can?t run fast, enabling you to then squish them with whatever weapon is to hand. Another trick that works if you find a spider on the curtains is to cover the beast with a longish strip of packing tape ? you don?t have to get too close but can then prod the tape covered spider and peel him off into the bin. I remember posting these spider tips last year but thought it worth another mention.

? Children?s hair conditioner makes a great substitute for shaving foam when you?re de-fuzzing your legs in the shower. No sting and nice soft skin!

tantrumsandballoons · 27/02/2012 18:44

Now I have to know, what toilet dilemma do you have?

lazydog · 27/02/2012 18:41

"oh and rubbing the inside of banana peel on shoes makes them shiney." but stink of bananas, surely? Confused

nomorecake · 27/02/2012 18:35

oh and rubbing the inside of banana peel on shoes makes them shiney.
