do you ever find left over notes in shopping torlleys or elsewhere? i

i am vaguely intrigued by these as identified in teh times
"Discarded notes are rubbish to most people, but not for worldwide subscribers to Found, which reprints them. The magazine?s publisher, Davy Rothbart, gets bundles sent to his office in Michigan. Laura Kwerel, a radio producer in Washington, was ?overwhelmed? after reading one issue. ?I realise now,? she says, ?that there is more humanity in a discarded grocery list than in a thousand-page novel.? Some people need to get out more. "

but the thrill is just so...thrilling bear. and when you find alist, that rush is indescribable!

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 07/02/2006 17:21

snaffling lists in public from torlleys one is not using oneself is stressing me out big time - it must be what having sex in public places is like, well, a bit.

got two today and they do not repay the peril involved

Thai curry
Dishwasher tablets
bread
tic tac (added in a different colour in what looks like a child's hand)

now that was not worth losing one's dignity and good standing in the community for was it?

but as this is a social geography research project which will give me another 2.5 units towards my OU doctorate (and as I'm in the pay of the US Secret Service), I'll persevere

Parmesan
Chilli powder mild
Flour 3lbs SR 3lbs plain
Margarine
Mince
Milk
Whipping cream
Potatoes
Steaks
Jam
Choc Chips x 2
3 cooking apples
Semiskimmed milk
Tango 1.5l
Eggs

last week's sorry haul:
Paprika
Butter
Milk
Bread
Salad
Beans
Little Carrots (aaah)
Winter Puddings
Biscuits
Sunday - eh?

Butter
Bicarb of soda (what other bicarbs are there?)
fruit & veg - non specific, you want all of them?
salad
bacon
onions
ham - HOORAY
yogs

Biscuits
yoghurt
milk
cheese
Tea Lemon ginger - that is NOT tea

see what I mean, there's no comedy potential here, just the thrill of the chase and I'm not sure I'm up for that, my nerves are shot

babyonboard · 07/02/2006 17:09

oooh..dp found one on his lunch break and has just called to tell me..
it too has a message on it, obviously written by the 'lister' for the 'listee'
will wait til he gets home to see the evidence, as it sounds too good to be true.

cathyspam · 07/02/2006 17:01

cod - not made up! wish i was that inventive! I was fairly disappointed with my first find until i unfolded it!

sputnik · 07/02/2006 15:47

they are known as the X-lists

sputnik · 07/02/2006 15:35

Ok, I've finally worked out what's going on here. Bear is a CIA (or some more shadowy organisation) agent on a mission to assess the nation's psyche through the analysis of shopping lists.
It's obvious he's American from his use of words like "store". He is employed by them for his uncanny abilities to attract shopping lists, and spends all day trawling supermarkets posing as an ordinary dad, which explains why he appears to visit a "store" at least 2 or 3 times a day, as well as his encyclopaedic knowledge of the various branches of Waitrose in the Bristol area, their locations and facilities. He somehow duped (or are they in league?) Cod into starting this thread in order to increase his crop of lists. He nearly blew his cover a while back with the MI6 thing but has managed to backtrack since.
It's all so obvious when you have all the pieces, right? Even the name. Everyone knows bears are most common in the US. I'm still trying to figure out the IBM connection though

nitfreecod · 07/02/2006 13:47

actually, when I saw the Mature lady writing, and that the first item was Milton, I immediately thought Mnetter.

Wonder if anyone will own up...

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 07/02/2006 13:23

Mrs Badger - that's a mumsnetter's list - one who likes really really clean mushrooms

alexsmum · 07/02/2006 13:01

gdg- i tried waitrose in wilmslow on sunday but no lists at all? not a sausage!

alexsmum · 07/02/2006 13:01

i got my ds looking in the trolleys for me! we found two and he ran across the park joyfully shouting' daddy daddy we found two lists!!!'

GDG · 07/02/2006 12:44

Dh went to Sainsbury's Wilmslow last week and he was buying 'nice ham' - I asked him to put a little message by the 'nice ham' and leave the list in a trolley - but it's not turned up on here yet!

Nobody in Wilmslow then?

JackieNo · 07/02/2006 12:43

Hardly needs a list of its own, does it. Even I could remember 'cake flour' if it was all I was going for

sansouci · 07/02/2006 12:42

thought of this thread yesterday while getting my trolley & finding someone's list. it said "cake flour".

MrsBadger · 07/02/2006 12:40

only one from Waitrose this weekend - none in Tesco at all.
Yellow Post-it (does anyone actually buy these or do we all nick them from work?) with 50-ish Mature Lady writing (just like an ex's mum's, now I look at it...)

Milton sterilizing solution
Bleach
Gloves
Italian peppers
Mushrooms
Chicken
Courgettes

sounds like some serious Hygiene, followed by a tasty dinner

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 07/02/2006 12:16

does pancetta qualify as nice ham?

love the Thai list, mmm. I like Thai or as Homer said "Thai good, you like shirt?" made me laugh anyroad

please call Barney and Vera and ask them do they like nice ham - say you're from the Nice Ham Council

remember I'm the puppetmaster here. DO IT.

flashingnose · 07/02/2006 11:24

Deep joy - after not being to a supermarket since this thread started, went today to Waitrose and found two lists (admittedly after dragging two toddlers round all the trolley parks to "find the right kind of trolley darling" ).

List one

Torn out of a notebook, half the sheet missing, blue biro, very neat and tidy writing (I reckon it's a woman, 35-45, v well groomed - could be cod).

light brown sugar (palm)
butternut squash
coconut milk
coconut cream
fish sauce
lime pickle
lemongrass (3)
beansprouts

Methinks a delicious Thai curry is in the offing.

On reverse of list - Barney & Vera and a phone no. Could be that Barney & Vera are coming over to eat the curry? Lucky them.

List Two

Torn from a diary, hastily scribbled in pencil

Eggs
Pitta
Tuna
Ginger
Sugar Snap Beans - crossed out very emphatically
green Ibonu (that's what it looks like - no idea)
Pancetta
onion
mush
Pars(squiggle) (maybe parsnips?)
Pineapple sar(squiggle) - no idea
Sausages
Peas
Potatoes
Cakes
Berries
Yoghurts
Orange & apple juice
Butter
Babywipes
Brown sugar
Squiggle & squiggle (can't read as it's under a muddy splodge - found this list on the ground)

Pretty well-rounded kind of list - sausages but no Turkey Twizzlers for example. No idea what she's going to cook with it, mind.
