40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

Just did it on calculator app and came out with 41

Itsjustafleshwound · 09/11/2011 20:00

But you don't need brackets

EdithWeston · 09/11/2011 20:00

Sorry - post got a bit crunched.

You know which to do first because there is a rule for it.

Multiplication comes before addition and subtraction.

bumpybecky · 09/11/2011 20:00

it's a current facebook question poll thingy rather than someone's homework

I'm going with 41

DeWe · 09/11/2011 20:00

Multiplication Blush I can do maths, but not spell.

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 20:00

mama the O is for 'off' brackets off ie take them away first...

Cervix you don't assume there are brackets. You just divide/multiply first. So in this equation the divide/multiply section is 40x0 = 0

Then you add/subtract so 40+1 = 41

You only do the brackets first if there are brackets, which in this equation there aren't.

I am a fish
I am a fish
I am a fish

(Obscure reference)

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 19:59

my brain hurst and i have taken pinkillers and i'm shit at maths.

DeWe · 09/11/2011 19:59

Tell him: If you're at the lower end of primary then the answer is 1. Because you answer from left to right.

However as soon as you know BODMAS, dd1 did it in year 4, you do the Mulitplication first and end up with 41. Wink

gamerwidow · 09/11/2011 19:59

Its B 41 BODMAS rules.
If there are no brackets then you do the multiplication first and then the addition so its
40 x 0 = 0
40+ 0 + 1=41

CeliaFate · 09/11/2011 19:59

Bollocks, it's 41 according to google calculator.

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:59

Well.

That'll learn you.

Generally, don't the brackets go around multiplication parts of a sequence?

EdithWeston · 09/11/2011 19:59

Atyourcervix: because that's the rule. The "M" in BODMAS tells you the order in which you do things. You don't just read left to right.

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 19:58

no textbook, its a daft facebook question.....

OP posts:
CeliaFate · 09/11/2011 19:58

1 is the answer. Isn't it?!

TheVermiciousKnid · 09/11/2011 19:58

but why do you assume the brackets would be around the (40x0)? and not (40+40)

Because you multiply before you add.

ForkInTheForeheid · 09/11/2011 19:58

not to be a twat or anything but yes, it's 41. Definitely. The level of oaths knowledge is pretty poor on this thread i believe. Multiplication is done first. It could only be 1 if 40+40 was in brackets.

41

TheVermiciousKnid · 09/11/2011 19:57

40 + (40x0) + 1 =
40 + 0 + 1 =
41

As the second 40 needs to be multiplied by 0 first (taking precedence over the addition), I can't see how it can be anything other than 41.

bruffin · 09/11/2011 19:57

Ds yr11 topset says 41 using Bodmas

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 19:57
