40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

um. no. how numbers and why not words?

ColdSancerre · 09/11/2011 20:10

Brackets Of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction

The order in which you solve various bits of an equation, brackets first.

PEMDAS Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

With Parentheses being brackets and exponents being powers, square root etc.

Because computers (and iPhones) use very smart maths to work out how to send and process information.

But really, you do know this, don't you??

ShowOfHands · 09/11/2011 20:08

I am a fish.

MintAero · 09/11/2011 20:08

I am going for 1

Shite at maths but i do remember the teacher bellowing
Anything times nought is nought at the class for years.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:08

Brackets, order (also known as indices) division, multiplication (but it doesnt matter which way round you do those two) addition, subtraction.
If you always stick to that order when looking at a sum (or indeed algebra), it means that everyone gets the same answer :)

Iggly · 09/11/2011 20:07

The sad thing is maths is so ingrained in my head, I didn't even clock the whole BODMAS thing

PoppadumPreach · 09/11/2011 20:07

theres a pedmas down the road. i keep the kids away from him.

SecretNutellaFix · 09/11/2011 20:07

It's 1.

Because 40 + 40 equals 80 which is then multiplied by 0 which isn't possible so you end up with 0 and then +1 gives you the answer of 1

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 20:06

what? why? what has maths got to do with anything?

LeBOF · 09/11/2011 20:05

And what was the other thing mentioned? PEDMAS?

PoppadumPreach · 09/11/2011 20:05

atyourcervix

It's thanks to maths that mumsnet can exist.

I sincerely hope you are being facetious.

LeBOF · 09/11/2011 20:05

Can you explain BODMAS for us non-mathematicians then, please?

melodyangel · 09/11/2011 20:05

It's 41

TheVermiciousKnid · 09/11/2011 20:04

It has to be read as 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 because multiplication takes precedence over addition.

LeBOF · 09/11/2011 20:04

Because your spacing suggests the latter, but I'm not sure if that's a deliberate ploy to confuse us or not?

PoppadumPreach · 09/11/2011 20:04

The answer is unquestionably 41.

Everyone saying 1 or otherwise is wrong.

There is no subjectivity in this matter whatsoever.

As has been said by many, maths-savvy posters before, BODMAS.

Iggly · 09/11/2011 20:04

41

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 20:03

se maths is shite. and pointless and bollocks in the extreme.

why would anyone evr want to know such a thing?

an utter waste of time.

Abcinthia · 09/11/2011 20:03

~I agree with the others that it's 41.

LeBOF · 09/11/2011 20:02

Are we supposed to read it as

(40 + 40) x 0 + 1

or as

40 + (40 x 0) + 1

?

olibeansmummy · 09/11/2011 20:02

I'm going with 41 too

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:02

It's 41.
