40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

Havent read the thread, the answer should be one. Now going back to read the thread and see how it could be anything else.

Chocolategirl3 · 10/11/2011 09:11

First person to respond is just as crap as me so i dont feel so bad now

Chocolategirl3 · 10/11/2011 09:09

Originally thought answer was 1 but reading the whole of this thread i stand corrected. Just emailed the question to my work mates to see if they are thick or clever Grin

bruffin · 10/11/2011 09:08

Does anyone know when BODMAS came about, because I don't remember it from school when did o'level in 1979. A quick google seems to say that it came around with the invention of the calculator and the computer language. Although I can't find much to be honest. Handheld calculators were very new when I was at secondary, so could it be the older ones on this thread work things differently!

GrimmaTheNome · 10/11/2011 09:07

Well done LeBOF. Smile

Must admit I typed it in and then thought, bugger, the computer isn't going to work it out for me Grin

TotemPole · 10/11/2011 08:56

5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 x 0 = 15

We learned BODMAS, O was for order.

AvadaKedavra · 10/11/2011 08:52

Ahhh so I was right on the questions thing on FB then punches fist in air surprised how many of my more intelligent friends weren't correct I have to say!

TotemPole · 10/11/2011 08:51

41

multiply 40X0 first, then add 40 + 0 +1 =41.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 10/11/2011 08:47

I'm wondering whether we know the same people op, this was a huge discussion over a friends Facebook page last night!!

LeBOF · 10/11/2011 08:45

Wooooooohoo- I got 75 there too Grin

There's no way I'd have got that right yesterday.

HazleNutt · 10/11/2011 08:28

You are of course right, it's 15. about 300 000 people on FB have so far claimed it's 0.

While we're on this - have we covered nested brackets yet?

For instance 6 + (5 (4+3))2 -1

LeBOF · 10/11/2011 08:21

15 Grin- I could do that one after last night!

GrimmaTheNome · 10/11/2011 08:13

41 and 15

Stunned how many people don't know the order of precedence. Hope none of you write software - computers follow BIDMAS. But programmers tend to put in lots of brackets so that its utterly unambiguous to humans - I'd probably have written the original question with brackets as A + (BxC) +D

41 and 15

I seriously can't believe so many are claiming the first one is 1.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 10/11/2011 07:59
PacificDogwood · 10/11/2011 07:34

"The level of oaths knowledge is pretty poor on this thread i believe"

Must be a first for Mumsnet...

trixymalixy · 10/11/2011 07:15

15 to the second question. 41 to the first.

I'm amazed posters are still posting saying the answer is 1!!!! I really thought most mumsnetters would have got this right.

EdithWeston · 10/11/2011 07:09

15

(as BODMAS applies unless specified otherwise)

Kayzr · 10/11/2011 07:08

It's 1.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/11/2011 07:05
  1. Probably, it's a bit early and there are too many fives in a row there. But the point is you do the 5x0 as if in brackets.
