Great big effing boil on my neck! Help!

I've NEVER had a boil, ever, and now, 4 days after I go from long hair to a short bob, I've got something that looks like another nipple. It HURTS! I've put metanium on it and it's coming up to a point but there's no head on it. I don't feel too well either but that might be unrelated.

What should I do?! Help!

So you are on the last line of defence antibiotic wise. Well let's hope they work. BTW those antibiotics will make you feel quite awful. Particularly about an hour after you take them. Don't stop the course though and take them all do not squirrel them away for 'next time' like you did before

It actually looks slightly better. Be careful with the hot compresses, if it goes you will have a big hole in your head.

JodieHarsh · 16/08/2011 19:11

Dear Lord Shock

It just seems SO WRONG and such a bloody waste that it can't be squeeeeeeeezed until it bursts with a sort of sssPHththththhfffffffffffffffffffssssst sound!

Catsmamma · 16/08/2011 19:08

Just about to get last child to bed and then will be hitting the hot compress and cold Gavi. I think if I got that little satellite head to go, it'd be a relief! It's hot and dark and stinging but I don't feel fluey anymore.

Jodie, so glad to be such an inspiration!

Well, that was had more humour, pathos, courage and violence than most of the novels I've read this year.

Bag you are now kind of my hero and I want to bake you cakes in the shape of gigantic boils.

I hope you're all right though, seriously. And can they tell you how this happened and got so bad? Are you a bit run down? Do you need TONIC and suchlike?

MigratingCoconuts · 16/08/2011 17:40

wow, just read through this thread and seen the photos and...just wow!

That's the grimmest looking boil...well done! Total respect!

How are you doing now?

maxybrown · 16/08/2011 17:30

oh god I just watched loads more from that page - DH came over and said oh god it's almost sexual isn't it.............then said actually I can't watch anymore bleurgh

IwoulddoPachacuti · 16/08/2011 17:25

Ooh those videos! I wonder if there is a job where I could just sit and squeeze boils all day? Some sort of nurse or something?

DH just asked me what I was watching and I quickly closed it down with a chripy 'nothing much'. Feel like I'm watching porn or something Grin

maxybrown · 16/08/2011 17:16

wow watched video - fab!

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 17:08

Scoop and pack is where the wound which is left when all the goo is scooped out is so big you cannot just stitch it up because it collapses in on itself and refills. So instead it is packed (generally daily) with iodine soaked bandages so it heals from within. And FYI yes it does hurt like hell every sodding time

I had a similar thing on my foot once, it got scooped and packed. Six weeks, not walking, just crying every time the district nurse came into view. :(

Tinkerisdead · 16/08/2011 17:00

yes what on earth is scoop and pack?

Oh lord I clicked on it Fizzog. I've got morning sickness too! that was bleugh. It recommended another video (gigantic blackhead) check that one out. I cant link because I'm bilious now.

And yes I was looking for an explosion but of Bagofholly's one, it feels like we've all been sat here nurturing that one to a head!

maxybrown · 16/08/2011 16:28

heck I love a good spot but even I am wincing - hope you are ok Your story has made me laugh though - I mean in the way you have been telling it Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 16/08/2011 15:36

For those of you looking for an explosion, can I direct you

If you are of a delicate disposition, or about to eat, then it comes with a warning.

DrKoothrappali · 16/08/2011 15:34

Just seen your photos, crikey that looks bad. Hope you get an impressive explosion soon and the meds help.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 15:23

"scoop and pack"

What the HELL is that? Are there little special pus scoopers you can buy? Is that actually part of someone's job, scooping pus?! That's amazing!
I used to work with a girl who put maggots on diabetic related wounds. Apparently that really really hurts but she seemed to enjoy the work. We called her Lynne-the-maggot-nurse. Glamourous.

piprabbit · 16/08/2011 15:14

Yeah - glad you have a wide selection of medication now - really hope you get some fast relief.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 15:11

They hardly every burst properly though TheDoctorsWife46. Besides once they have reach that point they basically scoop and pack rather than lance.

Go OP go! Grin

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 15:11

Now waiting for prescription of clarythromicin and fuscidic acid. HCA straightaway went to get a GP and or was a nice one who sees me with the babies usually. She said that they wouldn't lance it as it already had one hole and that it looked like it was oozing a bit. They made no suggestion about dressings and weren't keen to put anything on it. If it's no better I have to go back on Friday. I have to stay on the flucloxacillin too. GP said I'd probably get thrush as well. Ugh.

I'm going to put another warm compress on it and then put the fucidin on. No one wants a puss explosion more than me! I'm desperate!

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 15:07

And don't let this put you off short hair.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 15:06

I hope they sort it for you. It looks terribly painful and with the temp and swollen glands is way beyond DIY territory.

Tinkerisdead · 16/08/2011 14:37

If they want to lance in, is it acceptable to ask the receptionist to film it on your mobile for us all to enjoy? I mean its bad, its really bad but lets face it, part of us are all holding out for the pus explosion story are we not?

diddl · 16/08/2011 14:12

Hope all goes OK.

My arm swelled & the veins were standing out-there was obviously an infection.

But as soon as I walked out of the surgery after they´d lanced it-my arm was back to normal.

piprabbit · 16/08/2011 14:06

Good luck - I think you're right, you need to see this one through to a conclusion today, not get distracted by it all being time consuming. Hope the worth is wait it in the end and you get some proper advice.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 14:04

Chimchar, I'm so very sorry to hear about your mum. That's awful, and such a terrible shock.

So, I've heeded your warnings and am at the docs. DH has the kids and has packed in work for a few hours and I've got my mum to come later. Apt is 2:40 and receptionist said that the HCA will get the doc in to have a look at it and that neither she or the docs had any apts before then so I'd have to wait. She was nice about it and it's only 40 mins so I'm back in the car, about to try for a little snooze.

I can't believe what a saga this is!

OP posts:
piprabbit · 16/08/2011 13:47

That needs some serious treatment - septicemia is horrible.

If the GP doesn't take you seriously, I'd go to A&E.

(my GP did a home visit and said I was fine - I wasn't, I was in fact dying. The out of hours doctor spotted the seriousness of my situation and sent me to hospital - I am very grateful to him).
