Great big effing boil on my neck! Help!

I've NEVER had a boil, ever, and now, 4 days after I go from long hair to a short bob, I've got something that looks like another nipple. It HURTS! I've put metanium on it and it's coming up to a point but there's no head on it. I don't feel too well either but that might be unrelated.

What should I do?! Help!

They don't like to cover it Sidge. Political correctness demands that new life forms grown on people have the right to wear whatever they damn well please so long as they don't ooze on the surgery floor. Grin due to the risk of a reaction to the dressing.

Sidge · 16/08/2011 21:14

I'm really surprised the GP didn't get the practice nurse to dress that for you.

Keeping it covered with an appropriate dressing will reduce the likelihood of further infection, and could be beneficial in terms of promoting healing as the antibiotics work.

Go easy on the vino Wink

Mumsnut · 16/08/2011 21:14

I think we need a boil emoticon.

catinboots · 16/08/2011 21:14

Oh. My. God. Holly.

thederkinsdame · 16/08/2011 21:04

boils are the new Boden.* Fact.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 20:59

Drinking in the bathroom! I'm a maladaptive genius!

Nope actually lots of antibiotics do. But some are worse than others. Yes Metronidazole is a vomfest but most serious antibiotics either make you hurl or shit yourself if combined with alcohol because they massively increase your liver enzymes.

JodieHarsh · 16/08/2011 20:30

Neck orifice. Ha! I bet there are specialist websites for that sort of thing.

Or have I gone too far?

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 20:30

ObviouslyOblivious, boils are the new Boden. Fact.

No wine? NO WINE????? AAARRRGGHHHH!!!!

I thought it was only metronidazole which had an emetic interaction with alcohol? I took my last dose at 4, had a tiny wine at 8 and next dose is due at midnight, so perfectly timed I thought!

But agreed, I don't want to gain a neck orifice.

My DP had a boil on his leg last year and had to have it incised, he was left with a hole in his leg that was packed daily with a special packing material that was made from seaweed but looked like fibre glass. I watched it being cut open in A&E, and should have videoed it vaguely helped the Dr by passing instruments and then felt a bit queasy. He's got a round scar on his leg now that needed a lot of bio oil on it the reduce the scarring.

ObviouslyOblivious · 16/08/2011 20:12

Great thread. I hope you and your new friend feel much better soon.

What kind of person films their spots exploding and puts it on the net????

GlaikitFizzog · 16/08/2011 20:06

THEY'VE JUST LANCED A CYST ON HOLBY CITY! :o:o:o:o

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 19:53

What is the hairdresser supposed to say/do 'oops, here's some hair from the floor, let's hide it' Confused Grin

Hellishday · 16/08/2011 19:53

This thread has entertained my children for hours.
The exploding stomach is the best ever. It has made us bond as a family.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 19:52

You really don't want a big hole in your neck. Honest you don't. You'd get a big scar and everything and no hair will ever grow where it was. Oh yes. That's what you are facing if it goes spontaneously. Your best bet is for it to reduce slowly with antibiotics. While a splat might psychologically feel good, it's really not going to help the infection nor the outcome.

GlaikitFizzog · 16/08/2011 19:50

Is wine ok with ABs then? I thought alcohol was a no no?

I wouldn't want you to suffer for longer and for CystFabregas to grow to epic propotions.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/08/2011 19:48

Yes, what namefortheday said. Oh for goodness sake don't drink unless you think vomiting will make it hurt less Hmm

Clarythromicin has some lairy side effects btw, I hope you read the leaflet. Auditory buzzing, a funny taste in the mouth etc. It's a great drug for a certain type of bacterial infections.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 19:47

I see. I really really don't want that. I want the blasted thing to explode, giving instant relief and not a small amount of pleasure.

I think WMMC means last line of oral antibiotics. If this doesn't work you may need hospital admission and IV abs.

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 19:37

Should I go back to the hairdresser and show them?!

OP posts:
BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 19:36

whomovedmychocolate what do you mean, it's the last line of defence? If it doesn't work, then what?

Just to clarify, I always complete the course - I had the flucloxacillin 250mg in from when my cs stitches were infected. Saw the out of hours who gave them to me and then saw my GP who wrote me a new prescription for a higher dose of 500mg.

Haven't had any side effects so far apart from ghastly metallic taste which I'm eradicating with wine.

OP posts:
maxybrown · 16/08/2011 19:33

yes you could!

BagofHolly · 16/08/2011 19:32

Jodie I'm hoping that can still happen! I'm not giving up easily! There's clearly a lot of nasty stuff in there and it has to come out somehow!

In all seriousness, could I REALLY have got it from the hairdresser? It does seem a huge coincidence!

OP posts:
maxybrown · 16/08/2011 19:31

heck it's looking really sore, glad you are feeling better though
