Most mothers will clean them during and after a feed but if she isn't the best at cleaning herself she might be neglecting to do so, it's quite common for young mothers to not be too great at caring for kittens.

If she were tame i'd suggest doing it yourself with some cotton wool as they're susceptible to infection if they're covered in poo but in your situation you might end up with two more to hand rear if she takes offence so it might be best to just leave them for a day or two and assess the situation.

They can purr from a very young age so that might be what you're hearing... little one obviously feels loved and well cared for with you acting as mommy Smile

Morning :)

Kitty has fed nicely and done a poo and lots of wees so I'm hopeful. She does make a ticking/clicking sound - wonder if thats a problem or a start of a purr? She does it occasionally, normally after a feed/wee/poo situation.

The mum and 2 other kits are now safe in a pet carrier in my conservatory away from my doggies. The mum was happy to move them and has eaten ham since, but not drunk any of the water we've left (that I can see anyway). She is filthy and young - 6m at most, so I'm thinking she's a stray.

She's feeding the other kits but no cleaning them - theres a lot of poo on their legs, is this normal?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I really don't think it is a lack of humour failure, more a lack of humour on your part, skin.

The kitten i found at the side of the road (actually, it was in the middle of the road playing when i first came across it, I almost ran it over) was half starved to death and had a bad infection. It took weeks to get it right and it almost lost and eye as a result Angry It had a sister but I spent hours trying to catch her and couldn't get close enough... I left some food and went back later that day but still no luck. When i drove past the next day there was no sign of her so sadly I think a fox got her Sad

Makes me so angry that someone would dump them like that right by the road after clearly starving them for weeks beforehand Angry

FlamingJamie · 17/04/2011 19:52

Fingers crossed. for the kitten

Jellykat · 17/04/2011 19:49

Agree, people are vile to cats, it's disgusting.

I found an abandoned kitten in the middle of nowhere last year, and took it to our local vets, when i went back to check on it's progress, someone had found her abandoned brother the same afternoon.I spent hours walking the area checking for any others.

Luckily the vets receptionist decided to keep them both..As the feral cats i feed (and my dog) would've made their lives hard going.

Good luck OP.

Bratfink · 17/04/2011 19:41

You are formula feeding your kitten Shock ShockShock you do know it will end up obese and thick?

(good luck with it OP, we hand reared our dog and he is very special Smile)

Northernlurker · 17/04/2011 19:17

NOthing funny about cruelty to cats jokes - people are utterly vile to cats.

SummerRain · 17/04/2011 19:06

Skin... get a grip Hmm

SummerRain · 17/04/2011 19:06

BOE is right, they can go into heat again so quickly. The last time we brought our kitten producing machine adopted stray to the vet (when he finally agreed to spay her) she was 8 weeks post having kittens and she was already 3/4 weeks pregnant with 6 more Shock

BodyOfEyeor

Can't help myself. Happy to accept your sense of humour failure though

TheMonster · 17/04/2011 18:50

not funny.

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 17/04/2011 18:49

JOKE! Sorry Blush

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 17/04/2011 18:48

Put them in a secure bag and thow them in the river.

TheMonster · 17/04/2011 18:32

Let's hope she doesn't get pregnant again anytime soon.

Pinot · 17/04/2011 18:22

I have asked around - my boys particularly have been canvassing the area. I'm going to print off flyers tomorrow. I hope the owners are missing her, not just abandoned her. I don't know - what a day!!
viriginia we did try - twice infact - to return the kitten but the 3rd time it was chucked out of the nursery, it was left a fair distance away. We had no choice but to take her in. She was very cold and not moving, and warming her and watching her literally come back to life was truly special.
I'm gonna blub now, it's been such a rollercoaster day!

Totally agree Attila... the kittens that were born in this house and handled from day one are the sweetest cuddliest cats. They're great with the kids too.

That being said one of the two that clawed me to pieces when i kidnapped him from the shed to reunite him with mum turned into the dopiest most loving cat you could imagine too. Sadly he's been missing for 3 weeks now though and depite searching the area I can't find any trace of him... so many dogs and badgers and foxes around that I think he's had a run in with one and didn't survive Sad

AttillaTheMum · 17/04/2011 17:52

we rescued a cat as a kitten and she fell pg when she was a baby herself. I helped her to look after the kittens and we now have a fully grown tom cat who lays on its back and miows to be cuddled and who follows us around the house. He is wonderful.

You will have a massive 'grown up cat' reward for this!

sharbie · 17/04/2011 17:39

we have a black and white fluffy rescue cat who has tiny stumpy legs - we believe because she was born and lived as a kitten under a low shelter Smile

TheSmallClanger · 17/04/2011 17:36

Feral and wild cats have their babies in sheltered outdoor spots.
You sound like you have received good advice. I'd start asking round to see if anyone is missing a female cat now, or at least getting the message out there on the grapevine.

You also need to keep an eye on Kitty's poo situation. We have a teeny tiny abandoned puppy as of last week, and she's only just starting to poo properly at 6 weeks. As someone said upthread, after her feeds, you need to wipe her bum quite firmly with something damp to stimulate her.
I know how dodgy that last sentence sounds. Blush

nailak · 17/04/2011 17:35

i read cats reject kittens if there is somethin wron with them

chickchickchicken · 17/04/2011 17:35

was hoping you would ring cats protection and not rspca and then Shock to read later post that they are not helping. sadly this is happening. a group of former cats protection volunteers near me have now set up their own small cat rescue as they were so worried about cats/kittens not getting help they needed

maybe also post in the litter tray section? dont know how busy it gets as never go there

hope valhalla can help. its very sad to think of them at the mercy of the weather and other animals

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 17/04/2011 17:27

I really think that the mum is not going to be daft enough to let her babies die of cold. Our mummy cat had her babies outdoors in November. She will keep them fed and warm and they are obviously in a sheltered place.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 17/04/2011 17:26

My cat was pregnant last year and took herself off somewhere to have her babies - we could see her going over several fences and she was obviously quite a long way from home. It was an incredibly distressing time for us all. We left some boxes in strategic places indoors and after 5 long days we went out and came home to find mum and 4 kitties safe in the house.

So I guess there could be a family out there wondering where their mummy cat is and it could be from several streets away. If the kitties are happy with mum then I would leave them be. It is really good that you are looking after the one she rejected - a real labour of love but knowing how newborn kitties are I can imagine it must be quite a pleasure as well. Smile.

Hope mummy and babies are ok.

virginiasmonalogue · 17/04/2011 17:24

You mustn't separate the rejected kitten from it's mum. Keep putting it back to her and check it stays there.

She should be indoors overnight or the kittens might not survive the night....maybe try and get her in your shed. I know people say not to feed other peoples cats or they'll stay forever, but if it means her and her kittens being safe it's worth it... maybe lure her into your shed/greenhouse with somw food so foxes can't eat them.
