to make a little sign for this woman?

I have ranted on a previous occasion about the morning rat-run through our village so very quick summary:

Single track roads - short-cut to city - I am apparently only person who needs to go opposite direction during rush-hour - majority of people coming the other way clearly think I am unreasonable for driving through my own village and glare and head-shake at me - I am cross.

Obviously it is the holidays now, so the school run traffic is missing which makes life much easier. However, there is one woman who I see every single time. She drives very fast on a narrow, twisty road with several blind bends so I finish up crawling around corners in case she comes hurtling the other way. She flatly refuses to back up even a couple of feet to the nearest passing space, and she makes no attempt to move over so that both cars can pass without scraping through the hedge. So I finish up reversing to the next passing space with her driving about 6 inches off my front bumper with a face like thunder, and then as soon as the road widens at all, she squeezes past, glaring at me all the time and shaking her head.

Bearing in mind the following:

  1. I live here and have as much right to leave the village as she does to cut through it.

  2. I drive a very small car which causes minimal obstruction.

  3. I don't drive dangerously fast.

  4. I am the one reversing and getting off the road.

would I be unreasonable to make a little sign saying "The next time you shake your head at me will be the last time I reverse for you. I can sit here all day - how about you?"

Would probably be unreasonable to add "cowbag" at the end, I suppose.

This happens on a narrow road round here and as I'm not usually in too much of a hurry, I generally back up to let others who are obviously much more important than me, pass. Though a couple of times, after I have backed up some distance to a passing place, twice, because another car has come along, I have been known to reverse back, really, really, really really SLOWLY. Winds the BMW drivers up no end. Have to get your fun where you can these days!

LoveBeingAbleToNamechange · 15/04/2011 14:09

Just set out early and park up, stand next to your car wearing a high vis jacket and hold out your hairdryer Wink

nijinsky · 15/04/2011 14:03

She probably can't reverse, OP. I think the getting out a book or holding up a sign is a good idea. You need to be a bit dominant in these situations. A couple of times I've had a stand off with twats in BMW 3 series. I tend to just stare them out. I drive a Merc S class. I don't mind reversing or moving into a space, but when there is none convenient, the one who is facing uphill should be the one to reverse. Otherwise, as I learnt from the time I lived in Germany, it is the one in the smallest car. Same thing when I'm on my horse. My horse is a 17.2 German warmblood, massive and knows his place on the road. Cars give him a wide berth. Come to think of it, I haven't had any car incidents at all since I got him.

CinnabarRed · 15/04/2011 13:59

GPS has a lot to answer for. 10 years ago half the cars driven by fuckwits wouldn't have found the short cuts in the first place.

My friend was left in hospital for weeks, and her horse was maimed so badly it had to be destroyed, by a lorry driver blindly following his GPS on a road that was much too narrow for his truck, who was also going too fast. And he wasn't insured.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 15/04/2011 13:53

I can do wailing and breastbeating - also stubborn sitting-in-front-of-her-car-and-reading, plus Tesco have delivered this morning, so I can bring supplies!

Jaydles · 15/04/2011 13:49

I also read that as breast-feeding :)

It is exactly the same in our village too even more so since they have reduced the speed limit to 20mph yet still cars fly round at 50. I would have lost my temper by now and told her to fuck the hell off, failing that just sit there until she takes the hint.

I am shocked at the attitudes towards horses and cows, I was once driving home and in front of me a man was driving through a herd of cows rather than waiting. He ended up with a cow climbing onto his bonnet.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 15/04/2011 13:49

i had this once when i used to drive to my bf's house in the country. wanker in a BMW refused to back up 3feet to the passing place. i was coming back from a work trip so had my overnight bag with me on the passenger seat. i switched off my engine, locked the doors, got out my airplane eye mask and fleecy coverup, reclined my seat and prepared for a little snooze ... he backed up ... very satisfying ... Grin

sends much support and confidence to OP!!

Not 'Dune' 'Duel' Blush

FannyFifer · 15/04/2011 13:45

The only sign I would be making for her is the rude middle finger one ;-)

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2011 13:43

"You can all hide behind the hedge and jump out filling the road with wailing, weeping, breast-beating women."

Ha, I read that as wailing, weeping, breast-feeding women"

which would also work Grin

foxter · 15/04/2011 13:42

YANBU, and I'm definitely going to use the book option next time i'm in this situation, as I'm not sure I would be brave enough to maintain eye contact!

Tangle · 15/04/2011 13:40

Round here beeping before you go round a corner doesn't work - and if anything causes more problems. It often seems to be done by the drivers who think they can drive down narrow, windy country lanes at 60mph and, obviously, because they've beeped everyone will be out of their way so they don't need to slow down for the bends Hmm. Given they're also the drivers that tend to have music cranked up and so won't hear anyone else using a horn more sensibly, I tend to figure the main result of using a horn when approaching a blind corner is going to be annoying whoever happens to live in the house up the drive opposite...

It never ceases to amaze me how inconsiderate and inpatient other drivers can be - especially around animals Angry. If I had the reluctant reverser, I think I'd go for the book/paper option (preferably with the handmade biscuits on hand :o)

FannyFifer · 15/04/2011 13:35

The amount of numpties on the road is crazy.
I like the picking up a book to read idea.

nobodyimportant · 15/04/2011 13:31

I had a fun horse one once. Car came up behind us really fast round a blind bend. My horse, who was normally rock solid around traffic, got a fright and jumped out into the road so the car had to stop while I got her moved back over. I got out of the way as quickly as I could, bearing in mind the horse was a bit freaked, but clearly not fast enough for the driver. Just as I was getting to the side of the road again she beeped her horn and sent the horse leaping into the road again! I took my time getting out of the way that time.

Another one was someone coming up behind me who clearly thought I should have moved off the road to let them past even though there was plenty of room to drive around. I would have done but the horse I was riding didn't fancy going any closer to the big pile of silage bales on the other side of the hedge. I figured there was plenty of room so it didn't really matter. The car decided to drive so close to me that he caught my stirrup with his wing mirror and smashed it. Idiot. Horse didn't bat an eyelid bless him.

It was always the motorbikes coming too close that terrified me tbh. One good hard kick with the rear legs of a horse would probably have been far more dangerous for the bike rider than it would have been for me!

Anyway, OP, I like the idea of a sign saying "Your turn!" Grin

MmeSurvivedLent · 15/04/2011 13:31

Love this thread. Yes, to sign. And picnic.

SolarPanel · 15/04/2011 13:28

Yes! A sign that says "Good morning! It's your turn to reverse today :)"

Itsjustafleshwound · 15/04/2011 13:20

YANBU - fabulous ideas!! If she is a lurker/poster, I would find another way to work for a while ...

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/04/2011 13:19

Yes. One that reads "Wanker"

He endangered the farmer, you and a carfull of children. Unforgivable.

Nagoo · 15/04/2011 13:18

Pleeeease make the sign.

Also, arrange for a pensioner to bring you out the tea and biscuits while you wait Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/04/2011 13:16

What a complete wanker. Because yes, freaking the cows out will move them along quicker Confused Angry

TandB · 15/04/2011 13:15

Millionaire - you need a sign.

OP - I had this situation once. I was going the right way up a one way street and this guy came out of a side entrance, saw me and deliberately turned into my path going in the wrong direction down the street. I just stopped, looked at him for a few seconds and then picked up the book that I had on the passengers seat and started to read. I don't think he could believe his eyes! Then another car came up behind me and he had to move!

Oh how I larfed!

Would thoroughly recommend the waiting and getting occupied by doing something else manoeuvre!!

MilliONaire · 15/04/2011 13:11

That is crazy! We live in a country area and there are narrow roads. I drive dd to school each morning and we regularly meet a total IDIOT of a man driving what looks like a toyota business car. He is normally really speeding and drives RIGHT up your arse if he happens to be behind you. The other morning I was returning from dropping dd to school, it is a narrow road with a fair bit of school run traffic at that time of the day as there is a preschool just beyond the primary shcool. Anyway, as I left the school there was no one behind me at all, it is a long straight stretch of road just there so I could see behind me for quite a distance, all clear. A minute or 2 later I glance in my rearview mirror and there is mr toyota practically on my back seat. He obviously came up along behind me at high speed, past the preschool and school.

I maintained my steady 'speedlimit' speed and he was SO close it me it was a bit unnerving. There is a very deceptive turn on that road - it is long and sharp and cars have a habit of coming round it too fast and on the wrong side as if they are not familiar with it they don't expect it to be as long or wind round quite so much. I slowed down as I approached this turn and took it nice nad easy round and just as well I did as our farmer neighbour was moving his herd of cows from one field to another and they were walking along the road to the other gate. Neighbour farmer salutes me & waves me down, I wave back and stop my car to allow the herd to pass me. Wanker behind keeps revving and revving and he is practically touching my bumper at this stage. THEN he starts beeping his horn at ME - expecting me to drive through a bloody herd of cows (who would only have taken a few minutes at most to pass). I sat tight but felt really hacked off at him. I turned round and glared at him. He raised his hands in an exasperated fashion. And then proceeded to beed THREE more times. At this stage the cows were getting panicked and walking into each other and trying to climb onto each other out of the way & scrambling up the ditch etc - i saw several with their eyes rolling in panic.

I sat tight, when the last cow had safely passed me I moved off slowly and the guy behind me revvs very hard & shot out behind me to overtake me, what he hadn't seen was another neighbour had been waiting behind the cows at the opposite end and she had her car full of preschoolers on their way to preschool. He seriously missed her car by about an inch. I stuck my hand on the horn and lifted him out of it.

I was literally shaking when I got home2 mins later - dh was here and he was livid. Next time I shall take his reg and report him. Lazy fucker should get out of bed 10mins earlier if he is that late for work. He is an ignorant driver.

QuintessentialShad0ws · 15/04/2011 13:08

Just bring a picnic blanket, a flask and a sarnie in a picnic basket, and leave your car for a snack!

TandB · 15/04/2011 13:06

Please all come and help me see off this woman. You can all hide behind the hedge and jump out filling the road with wailing, weeping, breast-beating women.
