to make a little sign for this woman?

I have ranted on a previous occasion about the morning rat-run through our village so very quick summary:

Single track roads - short-cut to city - I am apparently only person who needs to go opposite direction during rush-hour - majority of people coming the other way clearly think I am unreasonable for driving through my own village and glare and head-shake at me - I am cross.

Obviously it is the holidays now, so the school run traffic is missing which makes life much easier. However, there is one woman who I see every single time. She drives very fast on a narrow, twisty road with several blind bends so I finish up crawling around corners in case she comes hurtling the other way. She flatly refuses to back up even a couple of feet to the nearest passing space, and she makes no attempt to move over so that both cars can pass without scraping through the hedge. So I finish up reversing to the next passing space with her driving about 6 inches off my front bumper with a face like thunder, and then as soon as the road widens at all, she squeezes past, glaring at me all the time and shaking her head.

Bearing in mind the following:

  1. I live here and have as much right to leave the village as she does to cut through it.

  2. I drive a very small car which causes minimal obstruction.

  3. I don't drive dangerously fast.

  4. I am the one reversing and getting off the road.

would I be unreasonable to make a little sign saying "The next time you shake your head at me will be the last time I reverse for you. I can sit here all day - how about you?"

Would probably be unreasonable to add "cowbag" at the end, I suppose.

Surely you can't get a license without proving you can at least parallel park and reverse round a corner, and both of those moves are surely a lot harder than reversing relatively straight to a passing place?

Non-reversing woman is clearly Margaret Thatcher.

HerHissyness · 01/05/2011 15:48

Oh Slap away, Hecate (and others) slap away.

I try not to drive up there, because it winds me up so much, but some times it's unavoidable, and apart from shaking my head almost imperceptibly, I clearly mutter in my car so I have half a hope they can lip-read! Grin

In our car park, you have to reverse into the space, so you can see the incompetent loons as they nearly slam into the side of your car. Those that can't reverse end up driving into the path of equally idiotic drivers, it's like dicing with death!

One driver ended up in the edge of the football pitch having clearly pressed the accellerator instead of the brake. Took out a bollard.

Thank God there wasn't anyone walking on the pavement she crossed to do so.

thumbwitch · 01/05/2011 15:41

Oh I have used it ... but then I had a medical sort of job, lots of medical terms are derived from Latin (and Greek but I didn't do that). DigitisPrimus is the Latin for thumb, as is pollex but I liked the first one better for a posh RW type name.Grin
Now stop derailing Panda's thread! Wink

boosmummie · 01/05/2011 15:33

Thumb I did an O level in it too, however I can safely say that I have not had a great deal of use for it in general life in the 24 years since...Although it was quite handy when I moved to Spain 7 years ago, in a roundabout sort of way!

thumbwitch · 01/05/2011 15:28

oh I cheated on the last bit - I couldn't find a translation I liked for 'witch', since the words that I found also meant other things; and I have just, to my utter shame, discovered (some 30 years after buying it) that my Latin dictionary is missing the last few pages, from Wa onwards. You can see how much I used it, can't you... and I did an O level in it!

ANYway, back to Panda's madwoman... Grin

boosmummie · 01/05/2011 15:09

MoreBeta I didn't drop Latin in Lower IV and it's still taken me all day to work it out with the help of Thumb's direction Grin

MoreBeta · 01/05/2011 12:36

Thumb - oooohhhh that makes sense now. Grin

OnesDigitusPrimusMagicalis · 01/05/2011 12:23

gorn a bit poshly Latin for the Royal Wedding - aka Thumbwitch [csmile]

TOBG - yep, you are the only one who feels sorry for her! She creates her own stress - it's within her power to feel happier and give herself a small warm fuzzy feeling if she'd only be a bit more generous with her reversing.

ChristinedePizan · 01/05/2011 12:22

Theotherboleyngirl - Hardknott Pass should not be even attempted unless you are a competent reverser :o

MoreBeta · 01/05/2011 12:11

OneDigitus - yes I am BD.

You will have to give me a clue about yourself though. Smile

theotherboleyngirl · 01/05/2011 11:50

DH can't reverse. Bloody embaressing if you're the passenger in an obvious "we should be the ones reversing" scenario. In all fairness to him, he'll do it, but he's bloody shit at it and might take a few attempts. And also in all fairness to him it's because he has very poor eye sight with a bad astigmatism. Glasses absolutely fine for looking straight out of. If you have to twist and look over your shoulder then his glasses effectively don't work properly. So he has to do it all by mirrors - sometimes fine, sometimes not... I however am a superior reverser, and we have even been known on Hardnott Pass in the Lakes to stop and swap to me driving so I could do the reversing!

Am I the only one starting to feel slightly sorry for this woman?! Let's face it, all that angst and stress every day... KFP clearly has a happier life...

OnesDigitusPrimusMagicalis · 01/05/2011 11:10

morebeta (are you BD in a new guise?) - she has demonstrated amply that she CAN reverse her poxy 4x4 when faced with a large farm tractor - so incompetence is not an appropriate defence for the silly mare. Just sheer bloodyminded entitlement, in her case.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 10:44

I bet. I would too.

I don't get it.

I can reverse a mile down a single track, winding lane.

and frequently have to, because some pathetic person can't reverse 10 yards into a passing place Hmm

And I hate to be disoyal to my gender, but why does it seem to be women more often than not? (not always - my dad being case in point)

MoreBeta · 01/05/2011 10:41

Hecate - I'm right there with you, at least on the sentiment side if not the actual slapping. I don't drive now because I am rubbish at it but I can still physically maouvre a vehicle. It is a truely shocking spectacle at 8.15 and again at 3.45 at DSs school.

Honestly, I feel like pulling open the car door, hoiking them out and giving them a short reversing lesson at times.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 10:33

am I allowed to slap them? I'm not coming if I'm not allowed to slap them.

HerHissyness · 01/05/2011 10:32

Hecate, I cordially invite you to observe the car park used for those dropping off kids at our school. Any day you like, it's horrifying. Grin

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 08:43

How can someone not know how to reverse? [boggle]

If you can go forwards, you can go backwards. I truly don't get it.

My dad claims to be unable to reverse into parking spaces. If you can drive forward into one, you can drive backwards into one. I mean, he has to go backwards to get OUT of the bugger! Hmm

I don't know how people can claim that they cannot reverse a car. Stick it in reverse. steer.

MoreBeta · 01/05/2011 08:39

I have no doubt at all that this woman does not know how to reverse her car. She doesn't drive a massive 4 x 4 as well to inimidate other drivers does she?

I don't drive but have seen this phenomenon so many times at dropoff time at our school. In fact DS2 was once nealry run over by a woman who very clearly could not reverse her 4 x 4 and instead lurched forward across the pavement and knocked him off his feet.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 08:14

Nah. We can find you anywhere...

TandB · 01/05/2011 08:03

Can we co-ordinate our diaries? I wouldn't want you to come on one of the days when I was working up in London.

I would feel so rude.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 08:00

that was to grumbler also btw
kungfu - well, we could hardly come last night, when you were expecting us, could we?

Do you know nothing about initiations? tsk.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 01/05/2011 07:59

don't worry about it though. it's hard to read tone on here and obviously I got it wrong. for which i apologise.

or maybe i judge others by my own sarky standards Blush and that's my problem Grin

TandB · 01/05/2011 07:56

AIBU to be almost disappointed that I have not, in fact, been accused of trollery?

And Hec, you are so full of crap. No-one turned up at 2 in the morning. I sat up all ready, clutching my handbag and waiting to be spirited away for moonlight softplay fun!
