Would you take a stroller abroad for a newly turned five year old

Would you take a stroller abroad for a just turned 5 year old? We don’t use one at home, but she does usually nap on abroad holidays still from being non stop.

Personally I wouldn't have done (but my youngest refused one from 2.5). But also,them being knackered from the non-stop can also mean a good night sleep for DC in new places, and maybe quiet chats/drinks for you on the balcony

Have had children that age recently and have been on multiple holidays and no, can't say I'd even consider it. Mine was not even 5.5 on our last holiday and she'd have howled with laughter if I'd suggested it. If you think it'll make the holiday easier though and the 5 year old would agree then go for it.

You know your kid best. There is no way either of mine would have napped in a stroller at 5. But if it’s going to make your holiday more enjoyable for everyone then who cares what others think.

If I thought they’d nap in it and I’d get a little bit of peace on holiday - absolutely!

We took a stroller away when my DC was 5 as a one off for this very reason. And because there was going to be a LOT of walking as didn’t hire a car. We took our stroller from home and threw it away at the end of the trip as it was old and grotty by that point. The cheap Argos type ones wouldn’t have taken her weight/size at that point and didnt have a sun shade or basket.

neither of ours would have entertained going anywhere near a buggy aged 5, but if it would be useful for you, and the airline will take it for free, why not?

Our child was out of his stroller by 3. For a 5 year old? Unless there is a medical reason, absolutely not.

I'm curious as to whether you have a car or not? I would understand way more if you were a public transport user as I am and you often have to walk to "the walk/activity" as it isn't always available via public transport.

I'd personally ignore some of the replies on here and go with what you think. Some children are smaller / like to nap / or whatever reason.

Yes absolutely! You dont have to use it all the time but for long walks to the beach etc or night time naps/ walks back to the hotel! Long days and late night makes tired children

I know someone who took one for a 6 year old because she whinged about walking too far, but I would have thought by 5/6 they would be getting pretty heavy to push?

Depends on the holiday. We just took our 4.5 year old abroad on a long holiday. We didn't take a stroller (because we dont use one any more) but there were a few times where I wished that we had. We were planning to head to a busy city nearby and I was looking into buying a cheap umbrella stroller as I knew she would want to be carried. In the end we didn't go so I didn't but it (I had bought reins instead as found holding her hand in busy streets a bit stressful when my other older children were darting here and there.

My older kids made use of buggies for much longer than mumsnet would approve. For example when my then 2.5 year old wanted to walk, my then 6 year old would be in there like a shot! And the same is for my eldest child: as soon as he spotted an opportunity for a rest in the pushchair, he was all over it. He might have been squeezing in for a sleep aged 8, on the way home from dinner or something. My kids are generally energetic, limber young things, quite small framed and they know when they have had enough.

So, to conclude: beach holiday no. City break, possibly. Also good for storing all of the many bags you aquire on a day out!
