Waiting for GCSE results and starting y12.

Hi all, I’m new here. DD got the results she was hoping for and will be starting college in September!

My dd was having a bit of a wobble last night over A level chemistry.
She has heard its extremely hard, one of the hardest A levels you can do - she got an 8 yesterday in chemistry and is now thinking because she didnt get the 9 she wont get a good grade at A level Chemistry 🤦
I have told her as long as she puts the effort in, goes for help when she needs and isn't lazy, she should be fine.
Hoping when she wakes up today she will be not be stressing and loving chemistry again 🤞

A question about NEAs for music - does anyone know whether every school is moderated or is it just a selection? And is there any way to appeal if moderation brings marks down? I'm assuming the moderators look at a sample and then reduce marks for the whole cohort if they think the internal marking has been too generous. I'm just not sure if it's possible to appeal this on an individual basis. Dd was given the raw marks for her NEA, which looked like an 8 but are now looking like a 5 (thankfully the overall grade was brought up by the exam)

From the other thread it looks like a theme with lower than expected English grades - Lang and Lit. AQA mainly I think.

Great results here including 9 for both English papers and history

There’s definitely a theme emerging with English grades seemingly lower than expected both here and IRL as far as I can see. DS is really happy with his grades overall but also dropped a grade from predictions in English, as did many of his friends.

This happened to us as well and is really strange. Dd got 6 in Lang and 7 in Lit

Dd was really worried about her English lit, as she thought she had messed up the first exam but she has done well in all subjects.
She got 4 x 7s, 4 x 8s, 2 x 9s and a pass for level 3 Algebra (you just get a pass of fail)
The 4 x 7s have all just missed the next grade boundary - 2 by 1 point, 1 by 2 points and 1 by 3 points 🤦
We have asked for the scripts back for those and her teachers are going to have a look at them, to see if its worth them being reviewed.
She has signed up for 6th form and has now headed out with a friend to celebrate and to hopefully get some freebies 😂

We had great results 7/6s pretty much across the board except a 3 in History which he has always been a strong 8/9 in and one of his A’level choices! He’s terribly upset I’ve asked for the papers to be reviewed. It’s such a shame as it’s taken the shine away from the rest of his results. I can’t stand seeing him upset, however he is bouncing back, we’ve reselected his A’levels and he’s told himself that they are better choices anyway as he prefers non- essay based subjects . I’m so proud that he’s managing to shake off his disappointment and move forwards positively. Fingers crossed the new A level isn’t over subscribed and the college accept him.

Checking in - DD was very disappointed was predicted a 9 in maths and got an 8 and 9 in literature and got a 7! She’s 4 marks off a 8 so we have emailed her teacher and asked if we can pay for a review.
Objectively her marks are good and she gets into here selective 6th form but her ASD perfectionism is not serving her well today.

Same 2 marks off I think I originally wrote 1. I think perhaps it's when they get 8's and 9's in everything else, the 5 really stands out.

This is literally how I feel! That I am happy overall. He's done better than anyone in my family academically as far as I'm aware. And doesn't actually need English grades higher. He's been accepted for the a levels he wants to do.

It won’t affect most uni applications. Most only specify a 5 or above.

My son has a 5 in Eng Lit which I'm disappointed in too (7 in Lang) I'm not sure how it will affect uni applications.

His siblings all got 8s and 9s and his eldest brother went to Oxbridge...I feel he had the potential to do so as well but he really didn't do any (enough) work...he's got mainly 6, 7s and an 8 so they aren't bad really but I think, if he'd made a bit of an effort, he could have done SO much better.....

Not at all! I feel like it's totally valid. I feel disappointed too - even though I'm very happy overall which doesn't make any sense. Academics are a big thing in my family and my sisters daughter is the same age and got six 9s and four 8s so its hard not to compare as well. It's all relative and my son is really happy with his results and he got the strongest marks in the subjects he wants to do at A level so logically it's been a great day. But I'm constantly surprised by the things that trigger me and the things that don't in parenting!

I would say it's worth geting a re-mark of both but can the school advise too?

My DS is in the same boat. 8-9 for everything else but a 5 for English Lang (didn't do Lit). He is 2 marks off a 6 so we have just submitted it for a review. A 5 is fine as he's a scientist really, but we are going for the review as it is so close.

He's 1 off a 7 so that one may be worth getting re-marked.
Am I wrong for feeling disappointed? It's still a b and a b/c. The others are top grades so that may be why.
I feel awful for not being overjoyed

We are in a similar position - predicted an 8 in Language and a 7 in Literature and has ended up with a 6 in Languag and a 7 in Literature - it doesn't really matter (and the 7 looks to be right in the middle of that grade boundary so very much fine) but they haven't given us the mark equivalent for the language paper and I'd like at the least to find it out.

My son has done brilliantly in everything but got English language 5 and literature 6. 1 off a 7 I lit and 5 off a 6 in language. Is it worth paying for a re-mark.

Had the cutest thing happen today that actually made me cry! We went for an eye test, me, DH and DD1 and were saying how its results day tomorrow and how although we know think DD has done really well and will be going on to 6th form etc. Anyway when we were about to leave the lovely lady in the opticians handed DD a 4 leaf clover saying good luck and they had all signed it! DD was chuffed! And I am just so bloody proud of her I cried.

I also have preempted the good results and have got a card and put £50 in it. And promised her favourite dinner from the Chinese takeaway regardless of the results.

I hope those who are waiting for exam results get the grades they need for the next chapter of their life

@Basilandparsleyandmint my dd sounds the same.. she is hoping for vetmed at uni so these GCSEs carry quite a lot of weight for her future applications. She also has super high expectations of herself which doesn’t help things. Really hoping that they both come out with what they want! 🤞
