Choosing a fourth A level alongside German, Biology and Maths

Stowickthevast · 22/06/2026 12:54

DD has just finished GCSEs and needs to decide on her A levels.

She is definitely doing German, Biology and Maths but her school does 4, and takes an AS in 1 at the end of Y12. She'd like to do an essay subject but it's unsure which to choose from History, RE or possibly English Lit. She's not taken RE for GCSE, but thinks aspects of the course sounds interesting - the ethics bit more than the religion bit. History and English she's predicted 8s in, seemed quite into History when she was revising it but is worried the A level course doesn't sound as interesting. She's always been good at English but didn't have a great GCSE teacher which put her off.

Any advice? Is RE considered "lighter" than the others? She's not at all sure what she wants to do later or what she will drop. Possibly Modern languages.

My DS is at the end of Year 12, waiting for AS results next month. He has LOVED his German this year (and also the Spanish, but esp the German). It’s a nice course, and likely to be small class sizes, so lots of talking time.

Stowickthevast · 29/07/2026 20:42

@makemineadecaf she's predicted 8s and 9s. She's expecting an 8 in Maths but is hoping for a 9 in German and Biology and possibly History.

🙌 I also did Latin A level @WhisperingAngelisnotbad. She did Latin for 2 years in Year 8 & 9 but didn't do GCSE as there were other subjects she preferred.

The MFL degrees do seem quite undersubscribed so agree it's a good one to pursue. She is at state grammar at present but may not stay there for 6th form.

I think if the results go her way, she's going to go for German, Maths, Biology and History initially and will then either drop one or do the one she least enjoys for AS.

What grades is she aiming for for those alevels?

My dd is also awaiting gcse results and has chosen English literature, history, biology and psychology. She’s hoping for 9s in the first two and 8 in biology. Psychology is a new subject.

It looks as though universities right up to Oxford and Cambridge are very keen to find good students for MFL degrees. There are a lot of courses available for access to Oxbridge, aimed at state school students particularly, if that applies.

As far as the A levels go, having a language, plus maths, plus a science is quite a good combination for a future business career.

I did Latin A level and I think that Latin is a good base for studying Romance languages. It is also possible to do degrees that combine latin and other languages, if that does, on reflection, appeal at all.

@Stowickthevast I don’t get the angst with maths and biology. I agree trying to do a GCSE in another MFL is a good idea. I would just add an essays subject because MFL degrees are essays! My DD said those without essay subject s did not find the transition to degree easy and there’s lots of reading!

My youngest two are in y12. What has become apparent among some of their peers is the lack of 2 sciences (as doing a science based degree is often reliant on this). Maths is often considered a science but dependent on course. So make sure there not closing doors. I have one doing maths got an 8 for gcse and is finding it hard predicted a b (which will be hard won). One doing biology is enjoying it got an 8 at gcse an on track for a star.
What about timetabling dt2 wanted to do English but it clashed with one of the sciences (which were more important for a science degree). Opted for politics in the end as an essay based subject and loves it.
Dt1 is doing history and really enjoys it (however not all of it) says that some of the topics are hard going because they are less interesting to them but overall glad they took it. Another issue is that the y13 topic has been changed because the new teacher that starts in September prefers a different topic so it seems that topics can change.
Also ask school what combinations are good together one of mine swapped to do biology and chemistry because there was more of an overlap than chemistry and physics (for their exam board). It also means theres lots of other dc doing similar combinations which helps with studying and friendship formation if they don't know many people.
Mine were encouraged to go on a uni website (forget which one) and put different combinations of alevels in and see what degrees are recommended it helped dc realise which would help keep options open and which would not.

I am currently doing a science degree that requires two science A Levels with precisely 0 science A levels 😂 There are ways around this if it becomes an issue.

I loved English Lit at A level OP. It’s where my brain finally ‘got it’. It’s a combination of history, politics, culture studies, sociology, human geography and media studies. It looks at texts from every angle questioning why the author made certain decisions… the curtains aren’t blue to represent sadness they’re blue because Queen Victoria loved that shade of blue and the subject of the novel was a social climber emulating a class higher than their own. That sort of thing. Gives you a breadth of general knowledge if you’re able to get it.

Stowickthevast · 16/07/2026 07:34

She can't do another MFL as has only done one for GCSE. But I think learning another is something she'd like to do in the future so she does find the MFL courses at Uni very appealing as you can generally do a second language from scratch.

I don't think her interest lies in science really, she just likes biology and has consistently been predicted a 9 in it.

No decision yet, she's going to wait for her results. But I think if she had to choose today she'd do German, History, Maths (if she gets an 8) and either Biology or English. She's also not sure which school she'll go to. Her current school does 4 but the other one she's looking at, she only needs to do 3. She may start off with 4 and then drop one by Christmas if she moves.

Lots to consider!

Biology and Math counts as 2 sciences for most degrees

makemineadecaf · 16/07/2026 06:54

What has she chosen @Stowickthevast

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 15/07/2026 22:07

@Stowickthevast you might like to know that Cambridge recommend maths for students wanting to take MFLs there. It’s on their preferred A level list. If she’s good at MFLs, can she take another one? Alternatively, an essay subject is a good addition or possibly economics.

SapatSea · 05/07/2026 11:19

My DD did an English Language A level and enjoyed it. From what I recall they did modules on how children acquire language and other sociolinguistic elements such as gender, dialect, changes over time. Lots of writing skill development, writing for different audiences, textual analysis.

Stowickthevast · 05/07/2026 10:55

Thanks Tuik. She's done quite a bit of German history at GCSE - rise of the Nazis and Cold War - but does have the option to do coursework on whatever she likes so could chose another German topic.

OP posts:
Tuik · 05/07/2026 09:20

If she’s considering changing school, look at alternative History exam board options - DD is studying German and History and the history includes German history and so they work well together.

StarryArbat · 01/07/2026 20:21

Over 20years ago, my A Levels were German, Maths, French and RS. Like your DD, i chose RS because I liked the sound of the philosophy and ethics element, more than the religion element. Actually, ive quite regretted that for a while once I got to uni. I remember very little of it now so it hasnt really been useful. Plus i went on to study Russian at university and there were so many interesting history modules over the 4y degree, that it would have been helpful to have a more solid grounding in history (I also did RS GCSE rather than History). I caught up with peers, but i could have made life a bit easier for myself. My experience is obviously very out of date but maybe worth having a look at the modules for the MFL courses she is interested in and whether she thinks History A Level might help her more? I actually ditched maths after AS Level as I didnt do as well as I had hoped but for the last 15years have worked with numbers in the millions so it just goes to show that you never know what life holds!

Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2026 20:14

As I have said on books thread you can get through AQA doing entirely pale, male, stale.

Stowickthevast · 01/07/2026 20:12

Hi Piggy, I thought so too. It's Eduqas. Annoyingly that's at her current school and I think she's decided to leave. I can't find what board they're doing at the new school.

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2026 16:11

Hi stowick! What board is that for English because those are such refreshing texts!

Stowickthevast · 29/06/2026 21:31

She's definitely not interested in medicine or anything like that which is good as it's super competitive.

The 6th form she's now considering offers History where you can chose your own coursework which appeals far more. @Popskipiekin I think there must be some benefit to being a jack of all trades?

She's a bit worried about how Maths went so won't do it unless she gets an 8. Not sure about Arabic @mathanxiety but she likes the ab initio MFL courses, Cambridge and Bristol both look really good depending on her grades.

I did maths, physics, German & history (over 20 years ago…) and everyone thought I was batshit but I’m delighted to see someone else simply following their own passions. It certainly didn’t set me up for anything other than an arts direction (not enough science) but that didn’t bother me as I was headed down MFL or law track, and simply wanted to study what I was interested in. As PPs saying, try not to close doors unless your DD is certain she doesn’t want to pursue science. And why opt for history if she doesn’t like the sound of it?

Maths and physics would certainly be enough science for lots of STEM degrees, now at any rate. Agree, not med or vet med without chem or bio, but for sure physics, maths in a lot of unis and engineering too. Even without FM.

mathanxiety · 29/06/2026 18:59

How about RS and then Arabic ab initio or middle eastern studies at university?

I would drop biology before maths, tbh.

Would she consider Economics or Geography?

AlwaysRightISwear · 29/06/2026 18:52

I missed the architecture interest. Maths and art would be good for that.

Stowickthevast · 28/06/2026 20:16

I don't think her school offer graphics. She's doing some work experience next week at an architects next week so can decide whether she really does want to pursue that.

Otherwise I think she's decided to wait for results and then see what she gets her best grades in. She's leaning towards going to a different 6th form that offers philosophy so that's in the mix too now.
