BTEC/T level/other vocational 25/26 - part 2

New thread for those of us with DC doing vocational courses (and for those with DC looking for an alternative to A levels next year and looking for advice).

My DC is currently doing a level 3 extended diploma. He struggled academically at school and was pretty miserable in year 11. With a lot of hard work he got the grades needed for the level 3 BTEC and is now thriving at college.

OP posts:

We are supposed to be going away during half term...I feel very unprepared.

Raven08 · 06/05/2026 20:20

Very best of luck to those dc re-sitting maths and English 🍀
@Sisublondieits a trip to London Fashion Week.
The shop that dd works in is closing 😕
Such a shame. I think the owner is moving away.

Bless them! What date is his first exam, again? Isn’t it this month? 21st for us, I think.

He has two exams next week (Thurs and Fri) I think and one the week after.
I think they are doing nothing but revision at college right now. I hope so, as there is nothing happening at home!
He can retake these exams, so although it would be some extra work next year, at least it's an option.

Good luck with English, I know a couple of people retaking that, so I know how stressful it is. Is one before and one after half term?

My DD also finishes at the end of June. Her final major project is due this Friday and then next week they have said that students who have passed can "work remotely". (If they are at risk of not passing they need to go in every day to work on it.) Not sure what she will be working remotely on? Also what will they be doing until the end of June? I guess we will find out.

So glad no GCSE resits are needed here, all the best to those facing them. Also sending good wishes to those supporting elderly parents, tough times.

It looks like maybe most of our DC have not had it communicated to them about end of year structure or routine….? ( well, either that or it has not been communicated to us!) 😹

Thank you for the exam ( and mum) best wishes 😸… Luckily we have Maths, so “ just” got to nail pesky English. Not great with a ND DS who is very black and white as to what he will probably never use (!)..

Good Luck with your DD project!! 🍀🍀🍀

Just asked DS what he'll be doing at college after half term and he thinks "not much". Maybe one assignment resubmission.
There was a bit of talk of doing some revision here but he managed to talk himself out of it!

Rework to get things up a grade, or catchup on overdue assignments, or being told she isn't needed in.

An, very good points…. Thank you! 🤩

Sisublondie · 06/05/2026 15:16

@Raven083rd July! Literally Independence Day, almost, then!! 😹..

DS seems to be suggesting that once he gets his final assignment in, he doesn’t have to bother going again?!

Trip to London….. yay!! Is that anything to do with her project?

Sisublondie · 06/05/2026 15:13

I went to get update as to “ when he breaks up” and take in a past paper….. but DS has gone off on a walk! Which is good, I guess!… provided he does something constructive when back!!

@LarkspurLane Thank you for kind words …. I admit I used to try to change channel at “ Alzheimer’s “ adverts thinking it was too grim… but, now I’m there myself. It is weirdly comforting to know that many more are going through similar .. and any plethora of issues. I find it grounding when BTEC assignments / due?/ overdue?/ WE…. Or project?!/ Revision/… whatever makes me want to scream and I see the wider picture, so to speak!

Thank you, re exams! We “just” have English. He was only 9 points off last year. He was doing really well first/ second term in English classes.. I fear his foot is fully off the pedal now, tho…..🤔🤷‍♀️🙀.

So, end of June, not far, now! Do you have much left to do before then? Any summer plans?

There's a trip to London 1st week in June I think

Dd finishes officially on 3rd July but 🤷‍♀️
Deadline for last project is 22nd ( in 2 weeks)
No idea what she'll be doing from then til 3rd july!

Sorry to hear of ongoing mum issues, it's all such a worry, isn't it?

My mum is ok but I'm having friends go through it, and it's constantly on their minds.
Nice and somewhat unexpected to have this thread to share things like this.
I hope everyone feels comfortable joining in, be it family problems or BTEC blues/<what colour is for good things? golds?>.

Good luck to all with upcoming exams this month - when do you all finish for the summer, we are end of June.

Sisublondie · 06/05/2026 00:06

@Raven08Oh noooooo…. Sadly, I know what you mean re the skin and bones. The lowest point is showering her.. 😿. It’s SO good your Mum has agreed to having the tests recommended! Will it be a long wait, or will they be done at the appointment?

So sorry that DD1 is still 😿 💔…. It’s gut wrenching first time round………. Bless her… 🤗 x

We had a very long and lovely appointment with new Dr, did initial Parkinson’s test.., said they were indicative of “ Parkinsons-esque”, ( that wasn’t it!) and so been referred for another brain scan which should be conclusive . The Alz and Vascular D still ticking along.

Anyway! Good Luck at the appointment!

Raven08 · 05/05/2026 00:33

Sorry, hit send too soon!
Mums not great. How's your mum?
She has a drs appointment tomorrow and has agreed to the tests the hospital wanted her to have.
She's skin and bone tbh 😕

Raven08 · 05/05/2026 00:32

@SisublondieDd1 is ok...ish, thank you for asking.
Still sad a lot of the time 💔
I've decided no news is good news wrt college!

Sisublondie · 04/05/2026 23:57

@LarkspurLane

Ooooooohhhhh nooooooooooooo, you poor, poor thing!! That’s really horrible!! I’m not seeing any revision here, and I just want to scream.

High five on his assignment submission!! To be fair, mine seems to be up to date, too ( as far as I know!). There is talk of a couple of his classmates having to redo due to “ Chat GPT use”, but… it must be hard for them. I know when I was doing my Masters, I was paranoid every time I submitted work whilst plagiarism percentage worked out!! 😹!

Oh, I totally agree as to assignment submission, totally!! That is absolutely 💯 what I tell myself, anyway…….!!

Good luck with revision! When is your first?

Sisublondie · 04/05/2026 23:50

@Raven08I’m so sorry about the funeral….. yes, I can imagine.. the weird limbo “between “, up to the funeral is not nice. Good Luck with that 🤗 x

Eek, your Dd must be stressed if going in tomorrow! How much has she got left to do of the costuming? But. Yay yo work experience being completed!! .. you are SO right!! I’ve got zero idea about anything! It seems to have got worse as the year progressed. Mind you. I think that’s because if the bloody war cancelling his trip, hence the emergence of WE being “ a thing”, when it hadn’t been previously ( as he was doing it there). I’ll be honest, I have no idea when he is due to break up! Or when half term is!!! Mind you, again, I’ve not looked as all I can think of at the moment is bloody English Resit!! 🤯. It’s funny, as I genuinely was fairly confident last autumn. Now, I’ve seen sod all revision at home, a seemingly laid back “ well, as long as I get into second year of the course” attitude, and I’m having flashbacks of the hell of last year, and I’m thinking crap. It’s Deja Vu.

Anyhoooooo! I hope older add is doing ok? How’s her 💔? And, your Mum?

x

Raven08 · 04/05/2026 22:28

@Sisublondie The lack of info takes some getting used to, doesn't it?
At primary and secondary school they seem to always be sending emails, texts, letters...I've had absolutely nothing from college 🤷‍♀️
No idea whats happening after half term...dd doesn't break up until 3/7...?
Dd knows as much as I do (i.e. nothing..)
@larkspur
I think agree...getting work in on time is paramount.

Raven08 · 04/05/2026 22:24

May the 4th be with you!
😃
Things are plodding on here...
Dd is a bit stressed...so much so she's going in tomorrow (not one of her timetabled days in) to finish the costuming thing she's doing for the theatre/drama dept.
She's been working hard, and its only 2.5 weeks until her deadline 😬
W/E is done thankfully!
I suddenly realised yesterday that its over a year since her gcses began 😬
I really feel for the kids - and parents! - going through it this year.
It's dhs uncles funeral next week...I'll be glad even it's over 😕
Hope everyone is doing ok x

LarkspurLane · 04/05/2026 19:56

Hope everyone is well. Three "A Levels" this month, one IT and two maths. And about as much work has been done as was done for GCSEs (not much!). DS is definitely better at assignment submission, they have all gone well, than he is at revision.
I think broadly that assignment submission is a better thing to be good at than revision once you hit the real world. At least I hope so.

Three weeks to half term!

Sisublondie · 04/05/2026 19:40

Happy Bank Holiday, everyone!

Sorry again for being quiet .. hopefully I’ll be back to normal…. ( my Mum hates it when I’m on my phone, so I try not to use it in front of her). I’ve had a tough/ busy week or so, my Mum is now back up north and I took DS19 back to Scotland ( proud of myself for driving there for first time in years 🙄😹!), and back home for least next couple of weeks ( well, aside for a pre-booked girlie trip to Cornwall next weekend 😈🙀!)..

How is everyone?! I’ll play catch up, now!

As for DS, well, my GCSE anxiety is back in full force! 🙀🙀🙀.. and the Work Experience is 🤔🤔🤔?! So! No idea what is happening there! A “project” has been mooted, instead… with zero info !!

Anyhooo! I hope everyone is having a,lovely Bank Holiday!

😻

I think it is a big jump, not necessarily an academic one, though.
For dd (level 3 btec in fashion and textile design) its been more about completing self directed work at home, organisation of folders, makingbsure assignments are in by the deadline and presenting the work to the required standard.
Downloading the subject spec can really help with this aspect.
I'd say for the more "traditional" subjects the jump from level 2 to 3 is huge. If kids aren't getting 7s, 8s and 9s in the subject they will struggle at A level
