We haven’t had that back yet. Just scrambling now to see what uni’s are left that will take her. She really wanted booked but not much left now and to be honest the ones that are weren’t on her list. So it’s doing research about the uni etc. she really wanted a city.

Do you mind saying which uni she Firmed? I’m only asking because that would help get an idea of what sort of city appeals most so we can suggest alternatives in Clearing.

@halloween67 I haven't seen your earlier posts, but assume your DD missed her firm (and maybe insurance) places.
Have you tried calling them up with the remarked grade?

That’s good news anyway but yes frustrating you had to fight to get the correct grade.

@halloween67 that’s absolutely fabulous and bloody frustrating in equal measure. And just goes to show what a ridiculous system we have when it comes to A Level grading. Had a different examiner marked the biology paper with the correct grade in the first place you’d have been in a totally different position on results day.

Having said that, there are still lots of great courses in clearing, so if she’s not happy with her current university it might be worth your DD making some calls on Monday, even if the ‘advertised’ clearing grades are higher than hers. After the initial clearing frenzy of Thursday and Friday things should be a bit calmer next week, but universities will still want those places filled - she could even be in with a better chance of a place than if she’d had her ‘correct’ grades last week.

Definitely frustrating but great news anyway.

Southampton has Biology and Marine Biology still available and Lancaster has Biology with Psychology. Either of those of interest?

I think I might be needing some moral support in the next few weeks. DD is off to uni and I am going to miss her so much. Three weeks today we will have dropped her off.

Just got the contract through for DS's accommodation. First instalment is due 19.09 so 4 days after the start of his course. Will his loan have arrived by then or is it an unknown?

The maintenance loan normally comes through a few days after the student has fully enrolled on the course. This could be a little while after the first instalment is due, but that won’t be a big issue if it happens because the uni accommodation staff are used to the system.

Your son could just delay paying for his accommodation until his maintenance loan comes through as there shouldn’t be a long wait. He could email the accommodation office and explain that he is waiting for his student loan, if it doesn’t come in time. In most cases they students will already be living in the accommodation by the date the first instalment is due & the accommodation office have zero interest in evicting any of their freshers or upsetting them just because their loan hasn’t come through in time.

It may well be she chooses to have a gap year - it was mentioned way back. At least then she came come to terms with things/retake.

It would take the pressure off - though obviously there’d be no guarantee she’d get in to her first choice, and she might well end up at a similar uni to the one she’s got into now.

My DD had a gap year. She made some very useful savings working for Costa and its been really helpful applying for summer jobs being able to point to work experience.

@Twiglets1 gives great advice above - she will get into a decent uni with those grades as its unlikely things are going to change radically before next year - and can make a decision about resits once she's processed things a bit.

It wouldn't hurt to have a gap year if she feels all confused and doesn't feel happy about going to the Clearing uni. Sometimes it feels like a bit of a race to get the kids through formal education though God knows why - it's not that great once you enter full time work!

Like you say, it would take the pressure off and gives her time. She can reapply to her first choice uni if doing resits and could also apply to another 4 unis she has chosen from the whole range of unis, rather than panicking over what is available in Clearing.

She will end up in a uni she has chosen next time round. Even if she still doesn't get into the one she ideally wants, her insurance uni can be a safe one.

In her position, some students choose a first choice uni that depends on resits but have as their Insurance choice one that makes them an unconditional offer based on the grades they have already achieved.

Do check though, DS's accommodation says no kitchen appliances at all.

@petitdonkey DS is Langwith too, his first choice was Alcuin but he seems happy enough.

I do think that unis should be discouraged/not allowed to ask for deposits before student loans are given - or maybe student loans should be able to release some money for deposits early.
It's not fair on people who cannot then get their place guaranteed because they can't pay the deposit.

Ds is very chilled now. I need to at some point pin him down and find what exactly he needs. I suspect he will be thinking something along the lines of:
One spare change of clothes
One towel
One sheet
Weighted blanket
His favourite trainers that have more holes than otherwise
Anything else he'll do without or borrow...

I agree @MargaretThursday it does discriminate against some students.

I guess from the unis point of view they want a firm commitment that the student is actually going to turn up & take the accommodation offer.

Found you! DD now not wanting to take the clearing uni place and retake next year so she can reapply for the firm. Trouble is they wanted AAA and she got BBC… So she’d most likely have to retake them all to even stand a chance.

I don’t want her to go somewhere she’s unhappy, but I just don’t know if she should put herself through all that again - and what the realistic chance of her getting her dream uni is.

I’m not sure … my son got ABB and applied to AAA unis with his achieved grades and got offers (at ABB).

You might be surprised how flexible unis will be on grades, unless it’s a crazy competitive uni like Oxbridge or Durham. It a crazily competitive subject like Medicine.

She probably should retake the C though, unless she hates the subject now.

When I suggested that he get to halls and perhaps see what others have brought, he was hotrified because he thought he was going to set them all up in his bedroom.

He has got nice-ish accommodation, but 12m2 is 12m2 however you spin it….

He also needs to check what's allowed. Most halls won't let even a kettle in their rooms. If there's a communal kitchen they might provide a kettle and a toaster there.
