Thread 30 Covid Cohort, Mad March Hareing Towards Exams

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

UCAS is back up and running and DD has firmed Warwick (ABB - I might have said AAB before; I keep getting mixed up Blush) with Bristol (BBC) as insurance. Exciting but slightly surreal!

Are you all on Easter holidays now then? Ours still have a week to go. I was surprised that almost every one of those future jobs seem to require Psychology! Dd has made the right choice obviously Grin
Forgot about Easter hols. They from 9th for us.

Apparently if Dd gets into Southampton there is a four week break over April .

I should have listened to someone on the radio the other week who said she cycled the length of Hadrian's Wall, thinking there would be loads of pubs to stop off at and she couldn't' find any....

We are going to Northumberland tomorrow. Meant to be meeting my dad for lunch Tuesday. Have discovered pubs in Northumberland are still in 'winter' and not open on Tuesdays...

It was rather tempting Eww! I could quite happily dunk my head in the lush food at The Craven Arms in Appletreewick whilst walking the dog, but you can keep the cliff drop roads, it was the wrong time to not have a 4 wheel drive car Shock

DD would be horrified at us creeping closer; 4 hours is plenty distance!

The AI article is a bit depressing but I believe human roles will prevail in areas such as nursing, leisure/sport (teaching & safety) and hairdressing/beauty where the social interaction is a key element for some.

@ealingwestmum Glad you had a lovely week. Tempted to move this way? Shorter travel to Durham!

Good to know the recent offer holder days all seem to have been positive experiences. Sorry so many more being struck by covid though.

Sorry you missed the Swansea open day @Onthebeach a d j hope your DH feels better soon. No one was wearing masks yesterday at Surrey, in complete contrast with Wales, so I'm hoping we haven't picked anything up.
My sister has Covid for the third time and sounds like a 100 a day smoker. She says her hospital is full of it at the moment.

That AI article is soul destroying! How are ordinary people going to earn a living? What jobs for those with no interest/abilities in computer science?
Where is the joy in human interaction?
What future for subjects like history, geography, languages and arts?
And scarily close.
And we all know technology fails - frequently
Hope most of it is pie in the sky....

Apologies for the lack of engagement. I have had a tremendous week away alone with 15 random strangers in Yorkshire. So lovely to visit the likes of Harrogate and local areas again.

Totally empathise with the ups and downs of teenage moods. All a little calmer here since my return. Decision finally made today to withdraw from McGill completely, and focus on Durham and TCD (if an offer is secured post A levels), both fabulous options for her.

Singing, I forgot to say Durham offer was AAA for next update, you are doing an amazing job keeping it going! Still not decided on UK insurance.

Well DH now has Covid and is quite ill, DD on the mend which is good but obviously we missed Swansea open day so feeling a bit sad about that.

Oh yes, I use that when I teach sociology! Shocking.

The hand sanitisers/'smart' soap dispenser was a plot on Doctors a while back, believe it or not.

Totally. And product development based on white skin types: non touch hand sanitisers, oximeter readers etc used during pandemic. Got caught out on the latter…

Hmmmm... I do think people are obsessed with AI. It might be the future but the arts and culture are still needed for example.

And what's that rot about high school essays - we all know computers could do it! But the point is humans do them differently from each other, no robotic standards? Americans don't have exams really. So that may be why they perceive that as an 'industry'.

I must say I feel sad for a future which is just all automated and AI. Not sure it will happen though. In the 1950s they thought we'd all be in flying cars by now...

I really don't think teenagers flipping burgers is going to stop any time soon!

I'm as biased as the writer of that but in a different direction but that sounds utilitarian to me. No joy of learning - just what earns the most money, or is 'useful'.

I can only begin to imagine how bad an AI novel would be!!

And, yes, there will be job losses, not just gains - you can already see this in your local supermarket.

I was most interested in the need for Philosophers/ Ethicists etc. Areas of study that are not so popular at the moment.

Yes must be taken with a pinch of salt, I confess to thinking back to 'Tomorrow's World' and some of the crazy claims it made Confused.

Some of the claims in the article do rely on the fact that we may have sensible governments in place. Or ones that allow protest and dissent at least.

Yes online PoliceMEN Hmm this is the problem today /now. Reading the trending post about the Apple Tag one could surmise that there may not have been much input from women in the development of the product...or their voices and opinions were not deemed important enough.

There's been huge growth in some professions allied to the mental health industry. Private clinics, counselling for £100 an hour, gender issues/clinics, learning difficulties. Plus the NHS is becoming increasingly privatised or won't be around for much longer. So there will be a huge rise in generalised healthcare & Psychiatric clinics. Whilst surgery in some cases can perhaps be automated successfully i'm not so sure about diagnosis.

Surrey applicant day was beautifully sunny yesterday and very well organised. DS surprised me by answering questions in the interactive lecture we attended & talking a lot to other students. Wasn't keen on sharing a bathroom with anyone and looked in horror at the shared showers yesterday.
As a boarder he gets an en suite room in year 13 , so i think he feels he's done his time in shared bathrooms.
7 hours of driving was exhausting ...
