Considered the stress I’ll be happy when this year is done. On Friday DD got told she has a biology mock in 2 weeks and that the last topic they need to teach themselves in time for the mock! She is unhappy

We were lucky that it was mostly sunny when we visited Birmingham but most of her day was spent inside.

I think torrential rain and howling winds didn’t help Warwick, I imagine the sunshine is helping sell Southampton. Dd was hoping to submit her choices tomorrow having visited everywhere but I think things are a bit less certain now.
Sorry to hear of dcs who are being tricky at the moment. It’s a difficult time for them and , as a consequence, us!

Good news @cariadambyth! I think it was a mistake to go to Southampton on a freezing cold Feb day after storm Eunice, but never mind, Nottingham has its benefits for us as it’s nearer.

Sunny days may distort open day experience, but it is great if they can start feeling excited about the next place!

It’s exciting to hear of people firming offers now, it’s all seeming very real suddenly!
Dd and dh are in Southampton today and I’ve only had one text which read ‘I really like it!’. I’m looking forward to hearing more when they get back tonight.

Thanks both, no he hasn't firmed yet, I don't think he quite wants to shut the door on History yet, I don't want to rush him into a decision but I do feel twitchy. DD keeps changing her mind about 6th form places too. Hoping today might swing things, but he has got another offer-holder day next weekend (History at Chichester). I really wish the changes to student finance thing hadn't happened, we were starting to think a gap year would be a good idea but it really isn't a great option now.

@Horace123 congratulations on Durham. Is he anxious about getting the grades for Oxford?

@Oblomov22 thanks, ds finishes his course 31st March, so I’m just hoping side effects will have worn off by the start of GCSEs . The nighttime nosebleeds are awful aren’t they? Sorry to hear your ds’ skin is bad again

Well, we made it to today with DH and DS still testing negative so they have gone to the offer-holder day at RAU. We had been planning to all go but if one of us couldn't its better that it was me as I have been twice before with DS. They have been instructed to look carefully at accommodation options. My LFTs are still strongly positive but I feel pretty ok again now (day 6). DD is negative again now.

Crazy ds found the Roaccutane effects lasted for many weeks. A month? His skin is now not good atm.

Sorry I’ve been so quiet - am drowning in work at the moment. But have been keeping up with everyone’s news. DS finally got Durham offer last night. He needs 37 points and 6,6,6 for higher levels. So in terms of points it’s lower than Oxford but the same in terms of higher levels. He’s now not sure whether to put Durham or Exeter as insurance - have suggested he speak to school. Fingers crossed everyone else waiting for Durham hears soon.

Before DS started A Levels I'm sure I saw a chart showing the link between GCSE results and A Level results - so if you got a 7-9 GCSE then how many percent went on to get an A, B, C etc at A Level?

Has anyone else seen a chart like that? I've tried googling to no avail. I wonder if it was one of our old threads that I saw it on

I apologise if they may appear to be a dumb suggestion Piccolo. I have a daughter who I believe does not have, thankfully, ND traits that many of you here experience. But she has the usual high performing, highly strung, competitive but self loathing cycles that come with many, especially girls. And at times right now, she acts worse than a 13 year old on a bad day.

Before you either withdraw or keep trying to offer your DD support that she regularly rejects, have you ever written to her? I mean writing about why you so what you do as a parent, and how she makes you feel, and ultimately, what does she want in the way of support from you (or not)?

The challenge, if she doesn’t see, at calm and rational moments, is that you will not be able to support her in the same way next year unless she defers, or worse, doesn’t make her entry offers as a result of her spiralling. She’s clearly bright, just feels out of control.

It can’t be easy if you get little respite between her attacks, so if you are able to put the onus on her, step back and see if she responds constructively, it will give you and her some measure of actions and consequences, treat it like a contract. Which may mean sink if she doesn’t play ball, but hopefully not if she can see and be drawn back to the terms…

I've almost, almost got to the point of walking away and leaving her to sink or swim in the exans; you can take a horse to water and all that. The only thing that stops me is knowing that she will almost certainly sink, because she just cannot get on with things in an organized way in the way NT kids can. If I've done everything to help her, at least her results will be what she's capable of, good or otherwise.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS registered for Nottingham accommodation. I have no idea if he got an email but if I go on to the accomodation pages and click apply now, it lets me login (as DS). It then has an option to create an application but this can't be done until 4th April.

@Alsoplayspiccolo I'm sorry you're having to deal with all this, it sounds just so exhausting. I get a much milder version of this from DS2 when he is stressing but it's not as relentless. Deep breaths and gin?
