Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

@Fruitygal Ds is currently only doing LFT's but has no symptoms. Not been told to test or anything. We just thought it a good idea. He sat next to the lad Tuesday.

At my secondary they did a trial of finishing at 2pm. That was brilliant. But it didn't last long as they decided they needed a longer lunch break to set up equipment for science. I wouldn't have wanted to go in later instead as I had to do my paper round. My school wasn't that far from Moseley either (not a private school)

Ds2 just said he likes getting up early for school. Just doesn't see the point in getting up early when there's no school. He's just got up now...earlier than yesterday. Christmas will be the day he complains. He's said for years he doesn't want a great big roast for breakfast, he always complains all the way through that 2pm is a stupid time for a big dinner.

Our local college switched to a 10am start a few years ago, not sure how popular it's been. I cannot for the life of me imagine not starting work till 10, but I'm not a teenager.

10am would suit dd better than 8.35. She has one late start per fortnight although has some early home days. She had more late starts in year 12

My actions are based on facts around infectious disease and how it spreads ( relating to my former job) and not government policy.

Anyone with a cold, headache, cough, upset stomach, sore throat or more fatigue or aches than normal should be doing a PCR not an LFT.

@icanbewhatiwant not been on here for a while but noticed you mentioned protocol around PCR and LFT. LFT will only pick up covid if extremely high viral load. LFT positive equals 98% chance of covid.

LFT negative means nothing - assume someone who has been in close contact with a known covid infected contact is also infectious. LFT but also PCR at 2 days and 4 days post contact plus LFT every day for one week.

Currently awaiting a second PCR result for DD as friend she drove to school with in a car for 1hr without masks was negative on LFT the night before and a 6am but asked by school to do one at 12 and was positive - now confirmed with PCR. DD is isolating in room. We all don’t want covid for Christmas

Hampton Court was the one I'd heard of although I thought it was about 10 they started, but seems to have got later. I think hampton Court is supposed to be quite a progressive school

It wouldn't suit DS at all. He is up at 7am every day, without fail...

It was a boarding school, I think. Possibly Brighton College?

Wow. The teachers must have a long day if they are the same ones teaching the younger kids who start at 9am. I guess they won't have many hours of daylight in winter if they sleep in and start at 1.30

@icanbewhatiwant there was a school (somewhere on South coast?) which realised that biologically the school day was as the wrong time for teenagers and changed the school day to run from lunchtime to early evening!

@HibiscusIsland if I wake ds2 I just gets grunts and he usually goes back to sleep, unless he's meant to be at school. I often used to call out to him on a school morn. but got told not to as he can get himself up. 3 times this month I've realised at 8.30am that he's not been in the shower, he usually leaves for school about that time. When I call out to him, he always sounds really confused and asks what day it is.

We are a super sleepy household, all would love to stay in bed until midday, even the dog is happy until about 10:30, DS1 often missed both breakfast and lunch in his catered hall if no F2F at university that morning, but he didn't miss anything and was still heading for a first based on last exam results, so I think different schedules work for different people.

Dd1 will sleep til lunchtime sometimes. I tend to wake her up then which she doesn't mind

Ds1 isn't great at getting up. But ds2 will sleep all day as I've mentioned before. He came down for breakfast at 4.30pm yesterday. I said on here a few weeks ago that he'd got a parcel to return to ASOS. Said parcel is still on his bedroom floor. I told him I'd happily take it to the PO if he emails me the return code. But he's too lazy to get a return label. So thats his loss. He's like that with everything, it has to be done in his time. Goodness knows if he will get up when he goes to university. As for his bedroom...it's so messy, I couldn't sleep in there. Ds3 is always ready for school early, so he's much better. Though he can sleep till 10 or 11am I have never slept that long, is it a boy thing? I was horsey at their age and at the stables at the crack of dawn, or on my paper round.

Yes. I imagine she'll put Surey as her insurance and then if she gets offers from Warwick and Bristol she'll pick from whichever of Notts, Soton, Warwick and Bristol make the lowest offer

Dd1 (17) is like that too, a procrastinator like me. Dd2(14) isn't and it's bliss not needing to nag her. Most of the time I leave dd1 to it, but when it's exams I try and remind her to start revising. She tends to stay up late to revise and then I worry she won't be able to concentrate

Stress levels rising here and can't blame Meno I don't think.
DS came home from uni a few days early to get a piece of coursework done. Except he's not doing it. It's taken me back to the stress of his school days which seemed to consist of me permanently nagging him to do something. He's 20 now, and still the same. Obviously his responsibility now, but seeing him sprawling in front of the TV, or asking me to wake him at a certain time and being in bed still 3 hours later has certainly raised the blood pressure. DD is so easy in this respect.

He is still doing LFTs as a close contact too.....

Just to update that dd did get offers from Surrey, Notts and Southampton but forgot to tell me. She said the offers were for the grades it says on the website.

@Alsoplayspiccolo glad to hear he is fit to fly, how miserable for the orchestra member and their family who had to stay isolating in a hotel room in Dubai.
