Hi 👋 I thought it might be nice to have a support thread for us parents? (Can't see one in further Ed yet??) It's been such a difficult time for our kids - and for us! - but the end is in sight! Ds will get an e mail at 8.30am (apparently) and can go into college in person if he needs help/advice. Good luck everyone! X

Morning all,how are we all feeling today? thankyou to the posters who have defended our yr 13's! Yes there have been more top marks given out this year however maybe this is a positive way of working going forward? Assessment over the 2 years rather than it all resting on 2 exams at the end? I just want to say a massive thankyou to each and every teacher who has been involved with the utter shit show of the past couple of years also.

My son got a mix of 7s and 8s in his GCSEs and had AAA as his target grades based on that. He got A*AB so equivalent (though some universities don't accept dropped grades - he was lucky his offer was AAB not AAA).

So I think he got what he should have done. He is a bit of a "coaster" but continual assessment put paid to that and he actually had to work harder than he would have done if he could have crammed for exams. I am not sure I would have done so well in this system, I am better at exams.

I also know someone who did miss his grades (from a private school so they didn't just get given everything they needed) - and is now going to his insurance. The grades were not just handed out.

I'm not sure of the exact number of assessments under exam conditions my DD has had but there has been a lot since September, so I fully agree with @Artdecolover

I would happily join you in having a peach bellini but sadly I'm on taxi duty for my celebrating teenager!

It's like people cannot stand some people to have good news. It also makes me worry for the poor kids who have not got what they hoped for. It must make them feel awful if they are being fed the line that all grades have been inflated.

My ds has done 56 assessments under exam conditions since October, instead of 6 exams in May/June.

That is not ^ a typo. 56 assessments under exam conditions.

All of this ^ during the worst disruption to education since WW2.

So I consider his grades very well deserved fwiw.

I haven’t said anyone doesn’t deserve anything?! If anything, I think it goes to show that our exam culture is probably bollocks and our children are clearly given the opportunity to do their absolute best when observed over a period of time; not when given 3 hours to demonstrate their intelligence in a school hall on a particular day.

I’m delighted for all the kids who have done well and, for those who didn’t get the grades they were hoping for, hope that clearing gets them something equally as enjoyable if not their first choice.

My last apology was a genuine one - I really didn’t intend to upset anyone with my clumsy wording.

Crikey, I knew perfectly well that my comment was dickish at best and very likely to upset people who have spent the last 18 months trying to support their DC through the toughest time of their lives, not to mention those who have spent the day consoling devastated DC who missed their offer conditions.
