A level results day 2021 support thread

DS passed his theory about this time last year and has his practical driving test booked for the start of September. Was originally meant to be be February but got delayed because of lockdown. I'm not sure he's going to pass though and losing lesson and practice time from getting Covid isn't going to help. Fingers crossed - would be so much easier if he could just get it out of the way before he leaves.

Thankfully DS3 passed his practical driving test last week - he's been learning since Jan 2020 - getting a test has been a nightmare

Started talking to him today about various different parts of uni life (had 2 older DSs already been to uni so it's a bit easier this time round) he said it still doesn't feel real that he's going in a few weeks

Preparing myself for all eventualities. I have got in a bottle of bubbly for celebration and tubs of ice cream for commiseration. I just don't know what to expect.
He is going away for the weekend which is probably for the best.

DD has her driving theory test today - another hurdle to pass! No hope of a driving test though, certainly not before Uni, we are hoping she can get something in the Xmas hols.

Dd said she had her first results day nightmare last night
I wasn’t nervy but am becoming so as it draws closer- she is v invested in her first choice .

Dd had constant assessments but (and this is what seems so different from college to college) for two subjects she got constant feedback and before each exam pointers to what was to be covered. For two she is quietly confident and for one has no idea. I haven’t asked her how many assessments she took but she had six a week for four weeks. Sadly because of covid there was also pupils openly cheating as the teacher stayed at the front, so not even exam conditions.

I'd like to join too Due to the disruption in learning and not knowing what he wants to do, we are waiting on his results to work out the next step.

Like lots of others, Y12 was great - Y13 not, so the results could be varied but i have my fingers crossed for good ones as DS worked so hard for all the assessments they threw at them even when he was struggling.

Can I join too? Same birthday issue too and very unsure DS will get the grades he needs.

I'd like to join too please. I also have the added stress of DS1's 18th birthday on 10th.

I asked him if he was nervous about next Tuesday and he said he was just thinking of his birthday at the moment.

We are having a party that evening with all his friends who are also waiting for results. I am praying that it will be a celebration for all.

Not Russell Group... very much a recruiting university and under-subscribed courses that stayed in clearing until the end of September.

I agree, very harsh and not the results day we expected. But then again it was not the year we expected.

@cptartapp It depends on the university and course. My son's first choice and insurance both in clearing last year (and this) yet they would not accept him with one dropped grade. He needed ABC (firm) and BBC (insur) and got ACC, so on results day he was rejected from both courses and put into clearing.

The University of Kent are usually good for clearing places. DD had friends given good courses with ADE and CCD.[/quote]
That’s very harsh. What uni’s were these if you don’t mind me asking??

@ablutiions - I'm sending you a hug, (I know that's a bit frowned on round here but I don't care) you haven't let him down, far from it! I have similar worries, Ds has adhd which wasn't spotted by anyone until he failed his AS levels, he was doing maths, computing and physics, but after he failed them he was advised to resit the year and take BTec business and just one a level (computing) to give him the best chance of getting to uni to do computing. After he was diagnosed, I asked Ds if we should approach school and get him back on the a level courses but he'd lost confidence (massively) and said no. And since he'd been thru a lot I didn't push it. With hindsight he would have had so many more options if he had gone back to the 3 a levels (wanted to go to Southampton) but I've made peace (mostly) with the fact that you have to do what's best at the time. And they all will be fine!

@storminasnowglobe we are in a similar position re assessments. He did loads and was improving but the final ones were based on part of the curriculum and DS came out saying he had no idea how he'd done. Formal exams are one of his weak points

He did manage to get from a U to a C in maths in a few weeks after a lot of intense work at the start of yr 13 so I guess there is hope. I just really feel like we've let him down somehow. We didn't spot his mental illness until it had been ongoing for about 3 years. I know boys hide it but the signals were there and we just didn't see it and the school didn't either.

His course is appearing in clearing for the uni he wants (but I think he only wants that as his mate is planning to go there).

I know he'll be fine, wherever he goes, but it's such a tough work environment out there and I want him to have choices and a happy life, which is so difficult if you can't get a decent job long term. That said mental health is more important than anything.

Sorry for the outpouring. . This is more stressful than I thought.

I said to my DS2 tonight - i know plan A (firm)and B (insurance) - do you want to think at all about plans C,D,E, and F? No words spoken but I got the "look" clearly saying no!! .

Mum will be researching appeals, autumn exams and clearing on her own this week then!

Just joining this chat, I recognise a few names from other threads re year 13.
