Year 12 #3: Open Days and Predicted Grades beckon

Hope you made it finally something. Have the outlaws coming for 2 months in 10 days time. Not looking forward to that. Especially with the big bouncy pup.

I'm into Week 3 and now have a break of 10 days or so - had originally booked the time off and it's the same Trust so it was honoured. It's a brand new project and Team so I have felt a bit overwhelmed at the amount of stuff to do to get the project set up but my new team is lovely and I think we will all work well together. A bit odd going off at this early stage but the break is very welcome! I've had no holiday since October.

How are al the new jobs going?

Safe journey Somethingsmellsnice and from me too. It's so difficult. I lost both parents 15 years ago but we are going through something similar with MIL now. Thoughts are with you.

Still en route. Unfortunately no direct flights and a 4 hour lay over between 2nd flight. So probably still another 4hrs 30 mins until I get to hospital. Just taking advantage of the free wifi at the airport.

My eldest took 2 years before she went to university. She needed it, and now she is happy and settled we can take a big breath. She is young for her year group anyway, and has never lived in the UK before, so it was a big step for her. Not getting to see her for a whole term at a time is a bit odd for us, but no different from my own childhood, or my OH's, so in a way we manage. My youngest is also saying she doesn't want to go to Uni either. At the moment we are telling her to just get the best A level results she can. She can decide what she wants to do with them when she's ready. However, I really want her to concentrate on doing as well as she can in them, as I feel that they open more doors, come what may.

Whathave I think it's great she's found something she really wants to do - if she decides to do a degree later on she'll still benefit from her employment experience!

That sounds like an excellent opportunity - great start to the CV and plenty of time for higher education in the future (if she wishes)

LimitIsUp It's a marketing agency where she did her Y11 work experience. They were very happy with her work there and happy to employ her going forward. It's an area she's like to work in though depending on Brexit she might look at working in Spain in a few years.

My friend's DD has just started a degree in her mid 20s having worked and travelled her way around the world since sixth form. She felt she was finally ready to settle down to some hard studying.

So sorry to hear that, something I hope you get there in time.

Whathave - I think its great that you are happy to accept that whilst your dd is an academic high flyer, she should only go to University when she feels ready. Its very important to respect their choices

What is her job offer by the way?

My DS is learning to drive at the moment too. I actually found his old Legoland Driving Licence the other day They grow up so too quickly.
Re your DD I would definitely speak to her HOY. It is really unfair to pressurize her into going down the University route if she desn't want to. There are many different paths to take post Sixth Form and IMO schools should be encouraging DC to look into them.

Somethingsmellsnice I hope your journey is smooth and that your DF has a speedy recovery.

I actually came to say hello to you all. I keep popping onto the threads but life & work means that i don't have much MN time.

Moving DD for sixth form was still the best thing we ever did. She struggled with the long dark days in December/January but the mornings are getting lighter now. She's started learning to drive and is loving it.

After her most recent exams she's predicted AAB but is still determined not to go to university. To be fair i don't think it's right for her at this point in her life. She's getting pressure from school to change her mind so i may speak to her HOY and let him know that she knows what she's doing and has already had a job offer.

Somethingsmellsnice Sending you big hugs. It's a horrific experience - I did the same in 2014 (August and then December) when both my parents were critically ill. Fortunately was able to get there for their last moments. Said everything I needed to say but it was a difficult time. Thinking of you and wishing you a safe journey.
