Year 12 #2: Carols, commutes & a few stocking fillers

Thanks thefirst - I was beginning to think I was missing something (as usual 😀)
She had tests before she broke up for Xmas and thinks she will have them every term throughout 6th form but she has never referred to them as mocks. I guess they sort of are......but it's bit scary to think of them as 'mock A Levels' already!! This time next year they will be starting to revise for the real thing 😳

DS2's school holds internal exams in the June of Y12 which are used to decide the predictions that will be submitted to UCAS.

He also has 'mock' exams in February of Y12 - I think these are just for practice and to make sure they have understood the work covered so far.

Question for those doing mocks in Jan/Feb......Are they THE mocks or do they do another set in May/June?
DD hasn't mentioned mocks for next term so I assumed they only do them in May. I know they will have their firm predictions (that they will use for UCAS) at the end of the school year so they will have the summer break to do some serious thinking, so again, I assumed they would use the May mocks (along with minor tweaks if their grades are dramatically different to the year's performance).
...or perhaps she does have mocks next term and has just failed to mention it!?!?!?!

As for NYE we are just going for a big meal at my parents and playing board games (same as every other year 😀).

DS3 hasn’t done any work. His mocks aren’t until Feb. I’m not too bothered. I always hated mocks in January, they spoiled Christmas. Don’t want to think about this time next year!

The DSs are with their dad for NYE. Bit boring for them. DS1 will be out, though. I’ve got my usual NYE party 🥳 yay!

sandybayley SNAP!! I just hosted a big lunch for friends and their teenaged DC today, too. It's the highlight of the festive season for me (and theirs too, they tell me) as all the DC get on fabulously - we could hear them laughing and shouting in the playroom whilst we were in the dining room. It's an annual tradition now and everyone looks forward to it - we've got the 2019 date in the diary already!

DS1 has done some work - he has got a Bio and Chem prac to write up. I think he's done part of it but will get properly started after today. Also did a bit of piano and violin practice. The rest of the year is quiet and NYE will be just the family with a movie and a takeaway (plus fireworks on TV at midnight!)

Strange to this time next year, our DCs'll have uni offers or interviews ... scary!

losing two of mine for NYE so will probably just go for takeaway and some films or rubbish to keep DD1 company - and hopefully stay awake for the fireworks !!

Anyway she has sorted out her files today and written a list of what she needs to do.

I am probably having some friends over for new years eve. Just holding out to see who else offers. I'm not feeling very enthusiastic about it

DD did 2 essays before Xmas but doesn't intend to do anything else other than read a couple of books related to politics and a biography on her favourite (very decadent) author....but that's for 'fun' as opposed to work.
Personally I think they all deserve a break- it's probably going to be the most stress free they are going to be for the next 1.5 years.
She has been at her dads since Xmas Eve and won't be back for another week - so it's painfully quiet here at the moment.
Has everyone got their NYE planned??

DS tidied up his geography notes whilst on the sunbed and read two books relating to his EPQ whilst away as well as doing his outline plan for the EPQ.

DS has a bit of work to do but isn't back at school until Tues 8th so there is time yet! He's been very lazy this holidays but I don't mind as he got a great report so is obviously doing what he needs to do. He has exams in June but nothing before apart from regular unit tests.

Have lovely friends round for big roast lunch today and am very excited. Is it really bad that I look forward to hosting friends more than family? I just know they will be fun and there will be a lot of laughs. All the DC (teenagers) will get on and will enjoy being allowed champagne and beer.

On the house front just waiting for all the Estate Agents to open on the 2nd so we can start bidding on the two houses we like. Both of which will be excellent for hosting Christmas 2019!

Ds has school play when he goes back too so lots of lines to learn (with muggins here helping) and being dyslexic it takes him ages, but he gets there in the end. Takes something from the watching when you know it word for word by the time it starts 😂😂

Kingscote, the family entertaining and being able to mix with all ages is worth as much as a tonne of school work in my book !! I agree too the last term was a long old slog plus all the getting used to new places, people and ways of working so they need a break. As long as they go back focused and ready to pick up on the work again.

Kick DS has mocks in January so is doing some revision (not too much though!) and I think he has music homework that needs to be done before he goes back. He definitely needed some time to recharge after the autumn term and I think they are revising when they get back, doing mocks for a week and then picking up again with new topics.

Kick DS has a novel to read and an essay plan to write for English, an essay to write for History and a book to read for Politics. He also wants to check and order all his notes so far.

As of this morning... he has read approx. one third of the novel and ordered 8 lever arch files on my Amazon account.

To be fair, we have had a lot of family socialising and he has massively pulled his weight entertaining small cousins and aged relatives.

Ds not worked so far. He s not been set any work and mocks aren’t until after Easter so I think both he and I are seeing this as the last relaxed holiday before he s into serious holiday revision at Easter and next Christmas and probably summer holiday work too. He has agreed to do some refresher maths practise and look over his notes before he goes back so he s focused when he starts back.

I am feeling a sense of deja vu asking this but are any of your dc working yet this holiday?

Dd has done absolutely nothing so far and it's just starting to stress me out. I have been keeping well out of it so far but I know she will regret it if she wastes the whole holidays.

Maybe a gentle prod today might be a good idea?

Back home with a bump! Its freezing, I have a terrible cold/sinusitis and jet lag so a duvet day catching up on crap tv in the Sky Planner and a bed day is in order.

He hasn't had a blood test, and someone else also recommended it,so I will try and ask the GP for one at his next appointment ( or maybe I should write a letter and request if, so the results are ready by then?).

I don't think it's school work - only possibly being bored as he is finding it all very easy.

Things haven't been too bad though - except for the sleeping which is made worse by FB messing in the night!

abitoffastate has your DC had a blood test recently? May be worth asking for one. Also maybe study getting him down. Maybe talk about that. My thoughts and prayers sent to you both

Have been waited on today by family as yesterday really took it out on me but all had a great time and though I hardly ate a thing ( one reason why we always went out for Xmas dinner) cos after cooking I never feel like eating I enjoyed watching others tucking in. I laid in bed till 10.30 am this morning and my dgd bought me breakfast in bed, bacon and bubble'n'squeak and poached eggs yummies!
Dgd goes back to school on the 3rd January, how early is that?! She has enjoyed a break from study but was panicking tonight a bit as 2 big assessments in the first week back. But she needed a break.
Everything that has not been opened ( food) will be took down to food bank tomorrow and I have £20 in shopping vouchers to buy more food for the food bank.
