Good Uni for Sports Studies?

Any mumsnetters first hand experiences? If it was somewhere with lovely countryside near by that would be a bonus (dd suffers from anxiety and loves being outside). Anywhere in the country!

I think Winchester does sports science, too, but I can't tell you if it's any good. I also did a course on Futurelearn run by the sports science department at the University of Kent, so maybe take a look there too. You don't say where you are based, but Canterbury is nice.

My son's coach's son is at Leeds Beckett and other club members have gone to St Marys in Twickenham. And another vote for Cardiff Met - Cardiff is a great city and there is plenty to do both in and outside the city.

Correction. It's a one year programme giving entry to "your chosen course" for "elite athletes" who don't meet the standard entry grades. Its typical offer is BBC.

Just to check, have you seen the foundation year programme for elite athletes at Loughborough? Would she possibly qualify for that? It's an extra year but essentially the same course and entry requirement is something like BCC.

Nephew went to Southampton Solent where they offer a range of sports degrees. Might want to check where graduates end up from some of them. He loved it there, did PGCE elsewhere and is now back down there working as a primary school teacher.

Hull has very easy access to the Yorkshire Wolds & east coast . It does sport science for performance but depending on your preference it sits under the faculty of health sciences.....a lot of graduates go on to be physiotherapists.

We've been to look at Bath. Dd wasn't massively keen.

Bath has brilliant sports facilities. I think it now tops Loughborough from what I’ve read.

Worcester. Very good for sports degrees apparently and near to lovely countryside. Not too big either, so good for people with anxiety.

Look at old polytechnics and see what grades they want and level of sport participation. Then look at campus facilities and where they are.

Dd is 17 and doesn't know which are 'old polytechnics' but I think I may be able to remember! Obviously we've done that - I wondered more if anyone had any personal recommendations.

I think its St Mary's Twickenham, not St Mary's University, Mile End (East End of London). Why anyone would want to study in Uxbridge is beyond me.......

Surely Durham is hard to get into?

Look at old polytechnics and see what grades they want and level of sport participation. Then look at campus facilities and where they are.

Loughborough, I went there fantastic uni absolutely loved it. Beautiful countryside and a lovely campus. I met my husband there and he did sports science, he loved the course, amazing facilities for sport. It's hard to get onto the course, however if you play sport at a high level they tended to lower the entry grades. I'd recommend Loughborough if your daughter can get the grades. Good luck Smile

Fair enough although St Mary's is technically Surrey and is a small, friendly campus.

Brunel - Hillingdon, not sure that's really London either - Greater London perhaps.

Both are great for sport studies though. Loughborough the ideal.

15 yrs ago my brother did a sports science degree. Went to Portsmouth but also looked at Bangor, Aberystwyth, and I’ve forgotten the others off the top of my head. Grades were similar to your dd.
