Starting a new thread as we filled up the old one!

DC 17 is in 6th season with NYMT. Also former BYMTer.

These annual threads have been a source of advice, emotional support and camaraderie for those of us with young performers enjoying everything that these awesome organisations bring.

😁

Tickets for Hippodrome shows on sale 🥳

Thanks - and I see that Carousel tickets are also on sale at City Academy in Birmingham. Does anyone know if that’s walkable from the city centre? I also gather it will be outside - hope there’s some cover if it pours down!

We’re in the north east and we have the same thing! My DS doesn’t break up till Friday as he’s in college out of our catchment but our catchment broke up last Friday. We had the same issue in February for the recalls. Why they can’t be standard I don’t know!

Hi @Operasingerkath North East here too! 🙌

Biscuitsneeded · 08/04/2025 09:12

Also, the dates for the residentials are usually published in advance, so if one week was going to be impossible I guess you could ask only to be considered only for the shows that have residentials in your holidays.

I'd add two things. A. As a linguist I do know the difference between their and there! 😉 Was just typing fast... B. For a good proportion of these young people, NYMT really could be classed as work experience and training, as it was for @Comefromaway 's DC. A lot of them will go on to make the performing arts their career, so if schools are at all difficult I think that should be pointed out.

Definitely! I think DS’s college would have been fine in terms of authorising absence but he would have missed key auditions and rehearsals for college assessments so it would have been a difficult decision for him. Thankfully it was all ok. And I noticed your ‘there’ but let you off this once 😂 @Biscuitsneeded

I suppose I'm just a little worried about future years, if we seem to have holidays that are out of sync with the rest of the country. Her school are fab, but she's already been licensed out a fair bit this year, then nneeded time off for an operation recovery! Hopefully, new year fresh start, or it might not even ever be a problem and my brain is being a drama queen!!

The residentials happen when boarding schools are on holiday and there facilities are available to use. Given that private schools generally have pretty long holidays, I suspect you must live in an authority that's doing things differently - traditionally I think NYMT has had kids from Somerset and Derbyshire where the school term dates are odd, but the schools haven't been difficult because they recognise that the rest of the country is on holiday! I think just worry about it if and when! It's not generally a problem in summer, and Easter moves around so much, it might not be a problem another time!

I think you're right 😆

The schools are allowed to code it as an educational approved activity. They could still refuse if the child in question had a bad attendance record, or if they were run by utter philistines, but they can approve the absence if they want to, and generally do.

One of my DDs has been accepted for NYT but struggling to work out how to make it work - I'd have to find her a host family in the city. Does anyone know how others make it work if they don't live in the course city since the courses aren't residential? Searching for companies that do hosting for ELT students but would probably still be a struggle. Hope all DC are having a good time on their Easter productions.

That's tricky. It's a shame NYT don't do residentials any more. Which city are you talking about? Does NYT have a chat forum where your DD could post a message asking if anyone can host her? How old is she? Is she old enough for a youth hostel?

Just a curious pondering as it doesn't affect us at all (DD is doing a new musical workshop in August), have most schools broken up already? We still have this week to go and I'm just wondering what would have happened if cast in Carousel, Crescendo or even a Friday starting show... I wonder if this has affected anyone 🤔

Two years ago my son was given a week leave of absence but he was in college & was meant to do work experience in the music industry so they counted it as that.

I see! Apologies @Thinkingofthings. I didn’t realise even at Sevenoaks there were different days

No worries! 😊 I didn't realise they started on different days either - would have presumed they would all start in the same day.

LibbyRuncie · 05/04/2025 23:14

Yep DD is #Tuck next Friday!

DMEAmum · 05/04/2025 20:59

Think it depends on the production. Fame is Saturday but I think the others might be Friday…

Plenty of taxis at the station- but isn’t it next Sat?

Definitely Friday 11th for us - DD is doing Crescendo (although your post made me doubt myself so I went and double checked 🤣).

Also getting the train next Friday! Are there taxis at the station?

Montimom · 05/04/2025 16:55

Good luck to everyone starting their NYMT adventure this weekend!! DD is hugely excited to be joining the cast of Tuck and has her bag packed already for next week in Canterbury ❤️

yodaforpresident · 05/04/2025 14:36

It would be a long walk from the station with a suitcase. You are indeed spoilt for choice in town for coffee shops which are about a 5 minute walk away. It is possible
for them to come out beside Waitrose without leaving the school grounds.
