Starting a new thread as we filled up the old one!

DC 17 is in 6th season with NYMT. Also former BYMTer.

These annual threads have been a source of advice, emotional support and camaraderie for those of us with young performers enjoying everything that these awesome organisations bring.

We won't be asking for a bursary, we will manage. She's keen to do it - so here goes!

Can I also ask, it says the fee is for 2 weeks accommodation and one week of meals - what happens food-wise after that? I am foreseeing costs spiralling!

Comefromaway · 07/06/2025 11:32

I know at least one YP for whom financing the course was detrimental to their family - despite coming from a single parent family with on UC (they were not eligible for a bursary. This student was 18 & worked alongside college but this had an effect on their preparation.

I donated to the bursary fund a few years ago, but there is always those for whom circumstances mean they fall through the cracks.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 07/06/2025 09:32

They do have a bursary scheme, I guess there’s only so far that goes. But it must be so difficult to find a balance between charging enough to provide such top quality experiences while keeping it accessible for all. I actually think for the quality of training the kids receive its excellent value. But also appreciate that it’s beyond the reach of many to find that sort of money.

I know, it is a lot of money. And it grieves me there are lots of talented young people out there for whom it is financially simply not possible. I wish there was an easy answer.

Advent0range · 07/06/2025 08:25

@Truetoself as a musician, sorry I should have said!

@doesanybodyhaveamap thank you, that's really kind. If we decide to go for it, I might take you up on that offer. £1300 is <aargh> though

doesanybodyhaveamap · 07/06/2025 07:30

Playing in the band @Truetoself

Well done to your DC @Advent0rangeand @doesanybodyhaveamap. Do you mind if I ask if its to play an instrument or be a performer?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 07/06/2025 00:17

They will also be getting A level results during LB!! But will be with good friends and things would have to go catastrophically wrong to not achieve the grades they need for their degree course. 🤞🏻

Can I ask more experienced music parents, should we take any and all opportunities offered DD, or is there a point where it would be too much? Or does that depend on the child? I'm guessing these residential courses are quite demanding.
Haven't had a chance to chat with her yet.

Hello!! My DC has also had a second offer for LB this week. They will be playing guitars on this one straight on the back of violin/viola on Fame. So we will lose them for a whole month!! It will be intense but they are in their 6th season now and have done 2 shows in a season before (although admittedly not back to back!). Happy to connect our kids if that’s helpful x

Well, that's pretty compelling @Comefromaway !

Music school tour and NYWO already.

Comefromaway · 06/06/2025 21:54

It depends on the child & how many opportunities have come up.

all I can say is thigh, is that my son is now working professionally because he did NYMT.

Well. It actually does, although she'd miss a family camping trip. Probably not too fussed about that. She's more concerned about GCSE results day!

Comefromaway · 06/06/2025 20:13

Ooh, well done. Does it work out logistically for you at this notice?

Advent0range · 06/06/2025 18:49

Oh goodness - DD just received an offer of Lightning Boy this summer!

So my DS just finished a week workshopping Every Day for NYMT. We were lucky to be invited in to watch some of the pieces they had been working on. The music and harmonies were outstanding and I would love to see this on stage as a musical. My DS had a fabulous week, learnt a lot , felt inspired by the writers and loved meeting some new fellow MT enthusiasts. The ensemble cast were incredible considering they had only spent 5 days rehearsing.

What a lovely review of a workshop week! Sometimes people are disappointed to be offered that but they are SO valuable, my kid had a great time doing a week on one a few years ago! Still in touch with those friends now and learned so much. So glad yours had the same experience!

Advent0range · 30/05/2025 23:10

@Kittykat57 that's great to hear, thank you for the update

Thank you @jaundicedoutlook. It’s really reassuring to know we haven’t missed anything.

DD is so excited!

I’ll head over and book some tickets now! x

Hi all, I’m a newbie here and tried to read through the previous posts. Is anyone’s DC in BYMT Sense and Sensibility? DD has just received a late stage offer and is completely thrilled. I’m just wondering what to expect/if we’ve missed anything so far. TIA x

Our DD is in this and has done BYMT the past 2 years. Nothing missed so far - just waiting for instructions on doing the self tape for casting…also worth booking your tickets for one of the performances as they can sell out fairly quickly…

They’ve probably just used a template from last year maybe? Sat 24th of August was Our House pick up day 🙂

Comefromaway · 15/05/2025 20:57

24th August isn’t a Saturday.

Truetoself · 15/05/2025 20:54

Saturday 24 August. I have already emailed. Well if it’s not a typo DD can’t peform as she will be away on holiday!

Biscuitsneeded · 15/05/2025 20:13

Truetoself · 15/05/2025 18:06

Please tell me it is a typo in the information we received about Fame Summer info and the collection date is 9th August?

What does it say? DS not involved but we are watching what we believe is the last night, which is indeed 9th August. Sounds like a typo but you can always email to check.
