Starting a new thread as we filled up the old one!

DC 17 is in 6th season with NYMT. Also former BYMTer.

These annual threads have been a source of advice, emotional support and camaraderie for those of us with young performers enjoying everything that these awesome organisations bring.

😁

I haven’t heard anything at all since my DC’s BYMT audition, aside from generic email saying that we would have an outcome by today. Is anyone else in the same boat? Is this likely to mean development camp? (Running out of biscuits rapidly!)

We’ve got a second stage offer which may come to nothing but I’m so pleased for her!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 03/03/2025 19:33

Don't suppose there's been an update email that we've missed...???

We had an email from NYMT this morning but it was confirmation of dispatch of an order from the shop. Talk about stomach lurch! 😅

Oh gosh... not what you needed!

Actor parent hanging here, just hanging out with the Muso parents today and hoping for good news for you guys!

Advent0range · 03/03/2025 14:08

Oh no! What bad timing!

Gah, still waiting. So many junk emails have come in, but not the one we're waiting for!

Ds has experienced similar. There is a Pit Band society now at his conservatoire and it's been a learning curve for many.

@yodaforpresident Depends on what is in the professional score for the shows normally so there is a range. They used a concert version scoring for Chess so it was a big orchestra, Ragtime was the normal scoring, as was Into the Woods and Anything Goes, new shows develop the scoring as it’s orchestrated so there is some flex but it’s down to what the composer/MD/orchestrator wants, Cat Bay was quite unique, Armchair was expansive! Often woodwind players need to play multiple instruments to a high standard to cover the range of instruments required (I.e. clarinet doubling bass clarinet, Eb clarinet, saxes and also sometimes flute/piccolo, oboe with sax (I think) and flute with sax are others I’ve seen too), There is only 1 player per part for woodwind or brass. Strings there can be 2 on a part but normally are only doubled where there is divisi, although Chess required more I think.

Workshop auditions this year enabled them to see which musicians can confidently play on a part on their own and not be reliant on someone else for counting bars rest or interpreting tricky rhythms for example, key skills in pit playing.

Musician seats can be very competitive as it’s down to what’s in the score as to how many they need of each instrument and the various combinations. This year it looks like a standard pit orchestra for Carousel (with no saxes) but doubling in the woodwind for Tuck and Fame (scoring is available online!).

There is also the Overtures performance this year which is new and looks like additional musician opportunities.

Edited

@QualityStreet5678 I'm sure our kids must know one another!

In DC's shows the bands have ranged from 17-28 (hunchback was more of an orchestra than a band - epic!).

It's a very different experience to your usual orchestra and very different skills required. DC is at a specialist music school and has lots of friends who are incredible classical players who are just lost in the pit!

Fingers crossed for lots of lovely news today 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Any additional skills in playing a related instrument will always be useful.

Stopping by to wish all the luck in the world to the Musician's waiting for results tomorrow. Hope all the muso parent's nerves are holding out OK!

BoilingHotand50something · 02/03/2025 19:09

Hi and sorry to gatecrash, but I have just been looking at the BYMT summer camps but presumably that is something different to what you are all discussing as you don’t need to audition for them? Does anyone know if these camps are worth doing or is it only worth doing the things you need to audition for? Thanks in advance.

yodaforpresident · 02/03/2025 19:07

Thank you @QualityStreet5678 - quite the range then. The workshop has encouraged DD to consider bass clarinet as her teacher doubles on this too.

@doesanybodyhaveamap and@QualityStreet5678 how large do the bands tend to be at NYMT?

QualityStreet5678 · 02/03/2025 17:09

Just checked email and it said by 3rd at the latest!

QualityStreet5678 · 02/03/2025 17:04

Just found this year’s thread!

Returning musician parent here and we had the update email to say outcomes will be emailed by (or on) Monday 3rd. Looking forward to knowing so the summer can be planned!

yodaforpresident · 01/03/2025 20:41

I wouldn’t worry about it @doesanybodyhaveamap, they probably have different lists for new people auditioning as opposed to people they already know.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 01/03/2025 20:33

Hmmmm ok. Definitely didn't get anything and now paranoid that DC has slipped through the net. They said DC could do both their performer audition and musician one on the same day, but when it came to it, the MD said he didn't need to hear them play this year (already done 4 shows as musician and they know DC very well). But I'm worried that because we didn't fill in a form or do the proper audition workshop that they might have overlooked them 😬
