NYMT/BYMT 2025 (Act Two)

So kiddo is on her way back now, but she had a fantastic day! At 14 she was the baby of the group and although she auditioned in the U18's workshop, she was mingling with the 20 somethings in the queue and feeling Tray Sofiticay! (quick ETAJ refernce there....)

So yeah, also first time for her doing a monologue in a "panel" setting (she has done LAMDA but thats not the same thing) so really really great experience for her and she loved the workshop too! Glad we went but not really gonna think too much more about it now.

That's right - in theory it's a "once you're in you're in" thing - you get in, you do your course and you become a full acting member.

But in reality you need to do a casting audition once a year, you won't be considered for any projects that year unless you do one. You have no idea what the projects might be.

This is our third year, and the second in a row I don't think we're going to make it to a casting audition. Ugh.

In our case there were only two options for the course by the way - online or residential. I didn't know what NYMT were going to offer and also reasoned the chances were better with online...? So they offered online. Of course then NYMT only wanted the kid for 5 or 6 days for a new musical workshop that year so they had nothing to do most of the summer! I asked to be put on the waiting list for residential (I knew of people who had got residential and wanted to switch due to clashes so it seemed a logical ask) but got an emphatic no! So did the weekly online course over 3 months. But again, remember this was those weird semi-covid times when things were not yet fully back to normal... A friend joined a year or two later and there were definitely more choices of course!

Yes exactly that. If you audition successfully you get an intake course and you can be a member. But then you would audition again for productions. I suspect these are mainly for 18+ and v useful experience you don't go the drama school route? But if you do go to drama school you would probably find it clashed anyway.

So, the audition is to be accepted in to the company. If you are successful you will definitley have a place on an intake course, but the likelyhood of a project after this is quite low... is that right?

Also also am I right in thinking you have to audition each year you want to have a place, but once you have completed an intake course you don't get to do it again?

100% going for the workshop experience which will just be fantastic (and good college audition prep... although still a few years away for us!)

I am really interested in all the NYT posts as my DS would like to audition next year. The website doesn't provide great detail about what happens if you get a place . Also has anyone attended the drama classes there during the week?
Just wondered if anyone would recommend them? Thanks

Re. NYT, my DS did it a few years ago, back when it was one massive residential intake course. He really loved it and felt he learnt a lot of things that helped for drama school (acting) auditions. He's tried a couple of times since to get into one of their plays but that seems to be a lot harder to do! The course as a standalone is highly recommended, but I'd say your young person is not very likely to do a public performance with NYT.

I’m not sure @MxPickles but I think you are auditioning to join the company once and then additional, annual auditions to join in the shows etc? Is this correct @allhailthebrain? There were only two choices, due to clashes, that we could make for the courses, so not sure about that one.

I must admit I find it a bit confusing what you are acutally applying for when you audition to join the NYT. Does everyone accepted get to do an intake course and then you may or may not be contacted or able to apply for projects in the year you are a member (That was how I understood it in any case!)

Also we had to say which course we were applying for so we selected the cities nearest to us..... I was sort of under the impression we were auditioning for the course in the city of our audition (if that makes sense?) If spaces are allocated per which course you have applied for then the acceptance rates could vary wildly from region to region - and almost certainly for online.

I'm overthinking it again aren't I?

DD is just planning to enjoy the NYT audition experience @allhailthebrain and @MxPickles and is aware of how tough it is to get into. I have managed to book a recall zoom slot so I can tick that off now 😁. I think I may have finally got the admin under control here and the calendar is looking mad.

Always the right way to see any of this crazy stuff!

And yet... the bit that makes it so crazy is that someone has to get it! It was 1 in 10 got a place the year mine auditioned - and they got in! I literally had to chase them down on a street corner after school to tell them 😂

They've still yet to do anything with them but that's a different story lol

We have like zero expection of NYT this year based on the numbers applying and it being DD's first experience. Should be a really great day tho x

You're absolutely right. Kate G from NYMT always used to tweet on results day how it's no definition of you or your talent if you don't make it - and that she was turned down and now directs for them - and has hired people who haven't been cast professionally before too! And now look, your daughter has a similar story, well done her!

I know there's a myth for boys that they all get in but I know 3 my kid's age who didn't get recalls even, on multiple attempts. One is now auditioning for degrees and the other two are in highly competitive performing arts colleges (sixth form age). They just weren't right for the shows the year they auditioned.

Yes! There is definitely a proper "results day" - they even ask you to put it on your social media with some hashtag or other. So regardless of when you auditioned and recalled, it's the same day. It was May for us. The wait was forever! My friend's daughter got her no an hour or two before we got our yes.

And we are clearly kindred spirits, I am a professional overthinker...

Hello All! Hope all the DC are looking forward to whatever they are doing this year. I've been on a self-imposed Mumsnet detox because I am mad busy with work - but I missed the chat and the biscuits too much! @Truetoself I think the details on all the creatives for Fame are already available on the NYMT socials, if that's what you were after. If you're more meaning you are looking forward to more general info about the residentials and show week, I'm sure it will be forthcoming very soon.

Just to say for those who are not getting what they’re after, my daughter auditioned for NYMT…nothing. BYMT possibility of call back still there. Dream is to do a BA musical theatre, got into a course this week!!! Right place right time I guess.

This must line up with the recall stage for video submissions. That makes sense to me at least!

Does everyone get their results emailed on the same day?
