NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

Hi @Melwingingit we are also first timers. My DD is travelling down next Saturday for the recalls also from West Yorks but there is works on the line from Wakefield (!) so she's going from Sheffield. I'm not travelling with her though because she is staying down because she has a uni audition on Monday. I'm hoping that i don't have to be there actually as she is not 18 til next month - does anyone know if parents are expected to accompany?

@Melwingingit also a newbie here! My 12 ye old DD has recall for catastrophe bay on Saturday! I am taking one step at a time and message is enjoy all the opportunities and the call back! What time is your slot Saturday? We’re going down from Derbyshire so not too bad but then afterwards driving to Scotland to see grandparents so long weekend ahead!

Hi @Mwingingit from a fellow northerner! Congratulations to your DD. My DS has the same recalls but for next Sunday’s session. He took part for the first time last year and had an absolute ball. Hope your DD has a good day at her recall -it’s a really good learning experience and fun if a bit nerve wracking! You’re in the right place here for any questions you need answering - everyone is so friendly and helpful.

@Melwingingit The theatres haven't been officially announced yet but I think all the shows are in London for 2024 apart from Platform, which is touring to Manchester and Birmingham. This varies from year to year - last year two shows were at Leicester Curve and one at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant, and there was a showcase at the Rose Theatre Kingston. Sometimes a show fits a very specific venue, for example Brass which was about the Leeds Pals in WW1 was done at the Leeds Royal.Armouries, and in 2021 The Hunchback of Notre Dame was performed in Manchester Cathedral. Obviously if successful your daughter would be placed in one, not both, of the shows she has been recalled for, so no clashes!
My DS has his recall on Saturday but he's 18 so he doesn't need me! More than happy to answer any more Qs you have, though. Good luck with the recall materials.

@Biscuitsneeded oh you are so helpful and reassuring, thank you for all the information, it really is greatly appreciated.
My DD is 16 - first year MT college, will be 17 during production week.
Just reading all the material for the casting workshop, whilst DD sleeps! 🤔
Regarding the Theatre - I can’t find anything with information on the location /which theatre the productions will be performed. Is it the same every year - does anyone know? Will ITW &OH be at different theatres?

@Melwingingit Not stupid questions at all!
They would probably learn some scenes from the show at Easter and then will finish it off at summer residential. They then move to near the theatre for production week, where final rehearsals/tech/dress runs happen and then the show opens. The residentials tend to happen at a boarding school with good spaces for rehearsal and an auditorium, so they are in boarding accommodation with all meals provided. They may need to share rooms or occasionally they get single rooms but that's just according to what is available at the time. Usually the cast make friends very quickly and enjoy the boarding experience, but there's an excellent pastoral team if there are any problems. Once they move to the theatre, they tend to get accommodated in university halls or school boarding facilities depending on the venue. During production week they tend to get an excellent breakfast but need to budget for lunches and dinners. Time is provided for these to happen and they have access to shops and cafes. Depending on age they can do this in groups of three or with a member of the pastoral team if they are too young not to be accompanied.
The NYMT shows are of a very, very high standard and lots of alumni now work professionally. In fact it would be hard to find a show on the West End that doesn't have an alumnus in it! It's also very hard work, amazing fun and the young people make wonderful, like-minded friends from all over and connections within the industry too. I highly recommend NYMT (although I'm obviously biased!) but I can honestly say it has been life-changing for my now young adult son.

@Biscuitsneeded oh thank you so much. Yes it’s this coming Saturday 17th at ArtsEd. We’re up north -W.Yorkshire - so debating the drive or train atm!
I will look further on NYMT website. If successful would they learn the show during the week in April and then July/August?

What is the accommodation like, do they share rooms? Complete novice at this so sorry if questions sound stupid.

Hi @Melwingingit , and congratulations to your daughter on her recalls! The D business is just mumsnet shorthand - DC is darling child, DS is darling son and DD is darling daughter!
In terms of NYMT I'm sure we can collectively answer all your questions. Your daughter has done very well! Presumably she now has a date to attend recalls and access to the materials to prepare? After recalls they should hear quite quickly whether they have been successful in gaining a place. There's information on the website about residential and production dates, fees etc but if you have more questions I'll be very happy to help!

Looking for advice - my daughter auditioned for NYMT and now recalled Casting for both Into the woods and Our House. Does anyone have any recent experience advice, how would that work?

@LibbyRuncie I'm not sure you ever got an answer. Yes, I would print off the sheet music and put it back-to-back in on of those folders with transparent pages so your DC can just turn the pages like a book. And any scenes they might be reading.
@NickyNack1 I wish I could help but I can't see the recall materials. I'm sure somebody else with a DC recalled for Catastrophe Bay will be able to advise though. The main thing is the team are always very nice, so if your DC wants to have a go at the soprano and the belt then by all means prepare both, and I'm sure if time permits they will be happy to hear both.

Hi all,
Just got the Castaway Bay info through for next weekend. Sounds really good.

just wondering if anyone knows whether they’re expected to learn both the female parts for “The Rose”? Also, are they allowed to try both the solos if they have the soprano and the belt, or do they have to choose one or the other?

Sorry for all the questions…it’s her first year, so not sure what to expect.

I definitely think it depends on the show with BYMT. The year mine auditioned they offered two different shows (sadly we couldn’t do either) and the second involved a weekend way down south (I forget where but think Devon or Cornwall or something like that!) in May half term, despite the show being based in Yorkshire! Where as the first I think was the self contained fortnight type.

Last year was our first year too @Mumster40 but my DD did 2 weeks before the show. I did see that they did some development weekends on the other shows though.

Last year was our first year @Mumster40 but I think they generally do it all one block, so 12/13 days of rehearsals then 2/3 days of performances.

not that I know of. They are doing animal farm rehearsals and show over Easter but not sure of anything else. NYMT always do Easter for show rehearsals.

@Mumster40 it has depended on the show. In 2020 my ds did 3 weeks. In 2021 a few days away in May hols( which I was worried about as in gcse period but it suited him to blow off some steam) then 2 weeks. In the main though it’s likely 2-3 weeks in the summer.

Hi @Zanthe and @Belshels my DD was at that session too at Mountview. She did a show with BYMT last year and it was two weeks in August - they had a couple of zoom sessions and a self-tape to send in before that.

Could any experienced BYMT folk let me know what the commitment is if you get into a show? Is it just two weeks in the summer? (Rehearsal week and then a performance week?) or is there another rehearsal period at Easter/ May half term?
