NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Looks like the deadline for NYMT musician applications has been extended to March 8th, from the original deadline of Feb 28th.

Hi everyone - first time poster on mumsnet (though I should be in the area for dads?).

Our daughter (DD?) has a place for BYMT's When We Strike this year. It will be her first BYMT experience (she's lucky having got in to a show at the first time of trying..!).

Does anyone else have a child in this show? We're completely new to this whole experience - she's a dancer primarily so we're more used to the dance world.

Any tips/guidance/support would be very welcome..! Thank you.

I think workshop may have been £1500 when mine did it! We did actually turn it down last year simply because we couldn’t justify it for the length of experience, especially given he had workshopped the previous year.

Very valuable experience though, he loved it, learned a lot and made some great friends and contacts.

i think there’s also an element of a show being able to recoup some cost from selling tickets to 6 shows, which the workshop doesn’t have.

Hugeccongrats to all the BYMT 24! A friends daughter is doing BYMT for the first time this year. I remember when my ds did BYMT and NYMT they both had Facebook pages and then from that the kids set up WhatsApp/snapchat type groups. Her dd is a bit nervous for the first time. I wondered if there are any such groups for Easter Animal Farm?

@Cherylf123 ah, that's good to hear of your DC also doing Unbound. My DD hadn't heard of too many doing this one, most from her show last year seem to be on Serene. It does sound like a great show!

@allhailthebrain interesting about NYMT feedback - I didn't realise they would provide this as I'm sure in the past they said they couldn't. Might not have been possible for my DC though as they didn't get to recall stage this time. Good to know for the future though as even a little feedback can be helpful and encouraging for them for next time.

@Mumster40 it really is nailbiting - and lots of juggling too I imagine. We find ourselves in exactly the same boat as last year with 1 DC in a show, and one on the shortlist, although with the roles reversed. It was right down to the wire and in the end did get placed last year. I would say it was worth the juggling and waiting because my DC had a great time and learnt a lot from the show. So now the wait begins, and once again holding off on booking holidays and other stuff.

On another note- NYMT folks, where is Into the Woods being performed? We love the show and I'd quite like to go along and see this in the summer if it's not too far away.

It was a non auditioned residential skills course. My child has never done one of those but I searched back on my twitter and found a thread about it

@NCMO2G it’s all new this year. There seems to be 4 types of skills course offered from what I can gather: non auditioned Easter residential, non auditioned summer residential, auditioned non residential and auditioned advance residential.
@MxPickles i think you could be right about the arts council funding for the new musical workshops.
@Comefromaway was that a skills course or an auditioned new musical workshop that cost £700?
We now have to decide whether to accept the NYMT workshop or stay on the waiting list for a BYMT show as my DC has been shortlisted for the shows but not offered a first round place. Apparently we will hear by the end of March…. It’s nail biting stuff!

Hi can only speak for workshop as all of mine have had the opportunity to do one and all learned so much. There’s something very special about working with the creatives on a new musical. All of mine felt they learned so much and from a different perspective as the characters and storyline were developed, they have so much input that it really gives them great confidence. My youngest is workshopping Armchair and I’m so excited and confident that he’s going to get as much out of it as his sisters. The cost has gone down this year for workshop. I know it might not be possible for everyone and I feel very fortunate we are in a position to give DS 🙏

The course my dd has been offered is the step by step course which is £450 which seems reasonable - one week non residential. - I’m presuming the offer yours have is a different type of workshop and residential? Maybe it’s to do with numbers of kids involved/ vs teachers?

Last year I think the Easter course was about £600. I remember something about it having originally been more but they were offered a discount or funding from the venue.

I'm wondering if the summer workshops don't attract Arts Council England funding? The main shows are subsidised which would explain the difference in cost....

Having different levels of skills course is new isn't it?

@Operasingerkath We said the same, but I didn’t realise quite how much more expensive it was than the skills course. I suppose there will be more (paid) people in the room and there’s more preparation involved, but that’s quite a difference in cost per person involved. Musical Theatre doesn’t come cheap!

My DC has been offered the advanced skills course at a cost of £700. That seems very reasonable in comparison. The workshops are nearly twice the price, are the same length of time, both residential and at the same venue..... ?

My sister has emailed and been told that the costs have actually gone down this year? It would be very helpful to know what the cost for a workshop was…. I can’t remember as DC was in a show…..

@Mumster40 yes, we’re a bit staggered by the cost of the workshop too! We’ve said DS can do it as it’s a new experience for him, but I am going to ask the question why- he did a full show last year, too, so it does seem excessive in comparison.

@Mumster40 it does seem expensive compared to the skills courses and the productions - I had assumed the three weeks would be three times as expensive but (luckily) not.

Maybe there are fewer participants than in a show, and they do need to cover their costs. And I suppose the creatives might get the same fees per show (although presumably no set or lighting design?) regardless of how long the rehearsal period is … it’s a shame there’s no choice over whether you get offered residential or not, as presumably the latter is cheaper?

@Belshels I have passed the snapchat info on to a friend whose daughter has been offered the same show. They've had a proper roller coaster of a 24 hours with the skills workshop offer from NYMT being a disappointment (previously cast) but then today the BYMT show offer!

For any interested, they also asked NYMT for feedback and got it, it was lovely. And they also verified that the skills workshops offered after the casting weekend are NOT the same ones offered to those who did not get recalls. So they really did see your talent x

@lindtchocolate the exact same thing happened to us a couple of years back - offered NYMT workshop which we accepted, then BYMT offered a show which clashed. We turned it down but explained why.

A few weeks later they came back and offered a different show.

In the end he didn't take the offer from BYMT because it clashed with his end of year show here, and it was that special first one post covid, so he stayed home and did that.

I think (and it's always amazed me they never cottoned on to this before!) that BYMT may have been losing good people because they offered a few weeks after NYMT and they were already committed. They've gone early this year, and bang on when NYMT did - I don't think that's a coincidence. And it's absolutely a good thing for auditionees so bravo!

@Mumster40 the workshop is so expensive in comparison to a show! We actually turned it down last year on that basis, we just couldn't justify it (not an only child!). Amazing experience to do, but we've only done it that once because of the cost.

My niece has been offered an NYMT workshop. Which is brilliant news but my sister is astounded at the cost! £1250 for 5 days. My DC was in a show last year which was 3 weeks and that cost £1995….. Can anyone who did the workshop last year please advice me of the cost? It seems staggeringly expensive…..!

My DD has gor Unbound as well.

Congrats to all with NYMT and BYMT opportunities. One of my DC has been cast in BYMT show Unbound, and the other shortlisted -so back in the waiting room.

One of my DC also got placed at Bymt off reserve list last year albeit later on - I think it was May. So definitely worth waiting it out if plans permit and there seems to be quite a lot of movement. Good thing with BYMT is they do offer feedback if you request which is helpful.

Both my DC found BYMT a great experience last year so I would recommend to any considering offers. They had a fab time and the team are lovely.

DD is happy because one of the older girls in her audition, also got into Welcome To Serene. She wants to set up a Snapchat group, so if anyone else's DC is doing the show she'd love to hear from them. Her SC is darcxcharlotte
