Which song for musical theatre audition?

I would recommend NOT doing Castle in a Cloud. It’s perfectly age-appropriate, etc, but makes casting directors stabby. I think the Secret Garden or Matilda ones are great suggestions.

If she is a good comedy actor there is something like I Speak Six Languages from Spelling Bee

Going for the less obvious, and definitely from contemporary musical theatre, how about "it's a fine, fine line" from Avenue Q? It's sort of a love song, but a thwarted, frustrated one - plenty of scope to sing with emotion and tell the story. And fine for the age group, even though Avenue Q probably 14+

Also be aware that they may ask questions about the show that the song is from to see that they have understood the context, BUT it’s fine to put your own spin on it. For example, my daughter did “My House” from Matilda but sang it from the point of view of a girl leaving the only house she has ever lived in as the family were moving. It shows that they have really thought about the character and what they are singing.

'Quiet' definitely a good one if they can pull it off vocally. DD did that as one of her audition songs for music scholarships at 11+.

Do they just want one? Or two contrasting pieces?

It does depend a lot on what your DD's voice type and range is like and how confident she is.

My daughter sang Quiet for her audition at vocational school but it is a tricky song. If she can nail it though it's impressive. (Matilda had only very recently come out back then though.

There was a song she used to sing from Daddy Long Legs but I can't remember it.

Ring of Keys although sung by a young child is from a show with much more mature content. At my daughter's audition they asked questions about her song, the character and the context of the show it was from.

Almost Nearly Perfect from Charlie is a lovely song although originally sung bu a boy but I don't think that matters.

Dh always groans when he hears Castle on a Cloud or Where is Love (he used to audition year 7 but now only does 6th form) so you've avoided those two!

I'd suggest having a look at the ABRSM website and seeing what is set for both the musical theatre exams and the last list of the mainstream singing exams for Grade 3/4/5. The choice there will be pretty diverse as the Board are more interested in setting good songs than the fashionability or not of the musical.

I've suggested these grades as, if you were looking at a standard musical scholarship for 11+ it is usual to want at least Grade 4 on the main instrument - depending on the school. SO probably a good idea to try and align with that standard. That would rule out a lot of the suggestions as Where is Love and Castle in the Sky are Grade 1/2. IF the assessment is a panel it is probably quite likely that one of them will be a music teacher rather than drama and be more interested in the technical aspects than performance.

OP, if your DD liked Like Other Girls, a song with a similar feel and theme of fitting in is If The World Only Knew, which is lovely and not too difficult to sing.

It was originally written as a standalone song but the composer (Scott Evan Davis) has now worked it into a musical, Indigo. I think the musical is still in development but it should still count as an MT song.

As @TheatreTaxi says the ability to be able act through song is really important so to be able to relate to the lyrics is really important.
Singing an unusual song is really good it shows a wider appreciation and not just the obvious easy out of the box songs.
My DD has had big success in auditions and competitions with one perfect moment from bring it on and pretty funny from dog fight all lesser known songs that she can relate to.
Lots of people will sing Tomorrow, when I grow up, Castle on a cloud she needs to be the girl who stands out from the crowd.

The school staff taking the audition are unlikely to know whether or not you've applied for a bursary.

Acting through song is a key element of musical theatre - it's not just about singing well, but performing a song in character. So it is important to choose something for a character your DD feels she can relate to. That said, I think Like Other Girls suits a more mature voice (musically and in terms of content), so whether or not it's a good choice depends on what sort of voice your DD has and how strong a singer she is. If she has a "younger" sounding voice or is a less experienced singer I'd go for something else.

My first thought was the songs were a little bit obvious. The only ones missing from your list are Greatest Showman songs, ‘Memories’ (Cats) and ‘’Tomorrow’ (Annie)!

I love this! Ring of Keys, from “Fun Home”. I think the character is early teens. Slightly more mature subject but beautiful.

Also agree re Giants in the Sky & Quiet.

This is another one that is age appropriate and a bit fun - Girl Scout, Beetlejuice

or even God Help the Outcasts! (No idea why I wrote God bless!). There's a simplified version available for one voice,.

Lots of the Disney songs kind of work for any age. DS once sang Someday from Hunchback for an audition when he was only about 12, and his small female friend did God Bless the Outcasts.

Of course there's also castle on a Cloud... and Maybe.... both of which suit the more thoughtful style, but perhaps you're trying to avoid anything too obvious.

Winnie Foster - my DD has done well with that and not an obvious choice. Letter from Charlie Bucket is sweet too.

Take a letter Miss Jones from Blood Brothers. Fantastic audition song.

Most of your choices are very well-known and over-used as audition pieces. A well-known song tends to be quite "exposing" because the people listening know exactly how it ought to sound so small flaws will be more noticeable, and it's also much harder to make a familiar song sound fresh.

Some of the songs in your list are also more difficult than they seem. Somewhere Over The Rainbow is a favourite of musical theatre casting directors because it starts with an octave jump that only strong singers can manage well.

Don't worry about too childish - the usual advice is to pick an audition song for a similarly-aged character. Your DD is only 10 so I'd probably avoid songs for roles that are obviously much older (e.g. Hairspray).

I have a DS so am not super-knowledgeable about girls' songs but you could consider these suggestions (including some boys' songs that would also work for a girl):

Good Girl Winnie Foster - Tuck Everlasting
No Matter What - Whistle Down The Wind (has the advantage of also being a familiar pop tune)
Giants in the Sky - Into The Woods (a bit trickier to sing)

Quiet from Matilda is probably less well-know than WIGU, but isn't the easiest song to sing.
