NCO 2021

I see that there is an old thread but not a new one for this year. DD is thinking of auditioning for the first time this year.

The format seems different in that there is NCO National and NCO Projects. For her age group the suggested standard is G4. Would she be better playing two G4 pieces or two of her very good G3 pieces or one of each?

She has not taken G4 yet but should take it this Autumn.

DD enjoyed Pro Corda but I would say take plenty of warm pyjamas/ bed socks/ extra duvet as she found it extremely cold in her bedroom there.

Ps DD2 just got offer of Projects London for this year. Super happy!!

Well, first she went on Pro Corda where the course director took a liking to her and championed an application to the JD he taught at. He taught her there for the next two years and totally transformed her as a player. She then went on to a specialist music school, where she is thriving.

I noticed a violin in NYO this year. I would have thought they would just choose more players - reckon it must be a decision to have a more compact orchestra, not sure why. And apparently hoody is on the way! The red 'blouse' has arrived and DD is not impressed!!

We received the hoodie but it was second choice colour.
If it's not available, why they advertise the colour? Anyway, got Concert red shirt too. Can't believe already nearly a week away for the residential. I hope all DC will have a great time!

I have just checked National orchestra list recently uploaded on NCO Portal. Number of players in 3 national orchestra are very different. For example one band age for particular instrument is 19 members but other is only 12 members. very interesting.
NYO took a lot of the U14s this year so NCO Mains is light

Many congratulations for you DD to gain a place for National member doesanybodyhaveamap!
Especially, Violin, Cello, Trumpet had to submit orchestral excerpts.
I really hope still all the events and residential will go ahead next year!

Well done to your DD! This may well be it. DD is 10 so projects is all we are waiting on.

No, but this morning we got an offer for U12s after DD was on reserve list!!! So excited!!

I reckon they are sorting out the responses from national offers and making the reserve offers then Projects offers will follow pretty soon.

@Pearlywunzel - tell DS not to worry; he won’t be left out. There’s always a mixture of new members and old hands. Social staff and tutors do a great job, and the kids make good friendships as they bump into each other at other events or have friends in common. It’s a small world.

@Pearlywunzel my DC went in 2019 and knew one other child from music conservatoire but they weren't particularly close. Most kids won't know anyone else.

2020 and 2021 DC had a place but it has been online of course. DC had a really fabulous time at the residential and they are not particularly outgoing or confident. Imagine school camp but playing instruments with lots of like minded children! I think the pastoral support is really strong and on the whole NCO seems to attract a really nice bunch of people!

@KaleJuicer Has your DC been in NCO before, if they're looking forward to getting back to it? My DS is excited, but doesn't really know what to expect. Those who've had DC in it before, presumably most kids don't know anyone else? DS is a bit worried everyone else will know each other and he'll be on the edges as a newbie!
