NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Hunchback Recall over for my DD. She said the competition was fierce. 14 girls and 4 boys. All extremely talented. They had mentioned there would be curve balls but nothing came. It was just the dance and then 3 pieces of script. No one asked to read again, no breakout rooms. She felt she didn’t shine enough. She did also say it will be an impossible task to choose. No mention of when they will hear. Oh well, the wait how’s on!

Yesterday the Billy team were saying 2 weeks for results and the other 2 were saying 1 week. A friend who did a Billy recall this morning thinks they were told one week - so fingers crossed they've all had a conflab overnight and decided they can do it in a week. Would be lovely if so.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 18/04/2021 11:35

That's right @DalekFan , and they know one another so will be lovely to have a project together 😍

Glad to hear your DD is feeling more positive @doesanybodyhaveamap. Goblin Market sounds fantastic and am I right in saying that @Yr10mom DD has been offered musician on that too?

@Lonecatwithkitten my DD has been offered Peter Pan. It looks like an amazing production, she is very excited.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 18/04/2021 09:25

Sounds like recalls were really super yesterday! Good luck to everyone that's in today's sessions!

After a great big wobble on Friday we are bouncing back over here. Goblin Market as a musician is a very exciting prospect, so much so that we have let NYMT know she is no longer available during the GM dates. This basically wipes out 2 show possibilities for NYMT musician, which I'm sure reduces her odds further. However we both needed some certainty. If NYMT offer her musician in Hunchback, she will be utterly delighted and will have the best time (of all the options on the table, this was her number 1 choice at the outset, but has perhaps been clouded by the rejections a bit). If they don't, we will book onto one of the organisations' summer courses for some performer training.

She's a lucky girl to have two bites of each cherry really. But rejection always stings, doesn't it? Especially after getting in last year.

@Jamsanmum I think for two of the shows they did have to say on the recall video how tall they were. But yes, going back to what you said earlier, I wonder if they will cast a company at this stage with some strong ideas about who might play certain roles, and then get a few key individuals to come and do small sessions as soon as they can to finalise the casting. They can't leave it till summer as they will want leads to do some work ahead of then, I'm sure. I mean it's amazing how they pull these incredible shows together in such a short space of time but there will be considerations like costume which will mean for some roles they will have to know more than 3 weeks in advance! I also wonder if some people might not be happy to take a place without knowing their role. I think DS would be anything at all because the NYMT experience is so precious to him, and he always learns so much no matter what he's playing (and also because they are very good at ensuring the ensemble have plenty to do), but I guess some people might have other options or be desperate to play a particular role. It will be interesting to see how it plays out!

janinlondon · 18/04/2021 08:41

Good point Biscuits! apart from one of the recalls yesterday where the two asked to sing and take direction on songs from the show had to do it i front of everyone (in the earlier recalls people were taken to private rooms to sing) no one has heard anyone else . That makes it quite strange.

Jamsanmum · 18/04/2021 08:41

I still find it incredible that they’re casting a show without having met anyone or seen any dynamics between the kids - let alone seen relative heights!!!!
Maybe they are magical and just ...KNOW! 😉

Biscuitsneeded · 18/04/2021 08:20

Oh indeed. There will be so much that happens that the participants in the audition aren't privy to and may read a certain way, but in the end none of us know what the teams know! It's also a strange year because the kids haven't heard each other sing, which will skew perspectives significantly. Hope today's recallees have a good day and then that the news doesn't take too long!

allhailthebrain · 18/04/2021 01:23

Hate all the double guessing - in my experience (which isn't vast) it doesn't mean anything. In a final for a west end show I was utterly convinced mine was totally out of the running because a few of them were sent out early while everyone else stayed behind and were asked lots of questions like availability and training etc. Mine was one of the few sent out and I thought ok, well that's a no! In the end got so close, down to the reserve place - many of those who stayed were given a no well before him. So you never can tell!

Biscuits numbers for final cast seem to match roughly what NYMT told us. I hadn't thought of the 120 being per day, that makes sense!

I notice the self tape got some more views today. Anyone else?

And from here until the email I will now overthink everything repeatedly - glad I'm not alone! Fortunately the kid generally doesn't and is happy it went really well, couldn't have done any better - this is the right way round. If I were laid back and he were the neurotic one, it would be way worse!

Jamsanmum · 17/04/2021 23:34

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded - sounds like you’ve done this before!!!! 🤣 must be exhausting for the creatives.... !
I wonder if they will cast actual parts from the zoom or just each company....🧐

Biscuitsneeded · 17/04/2021 23:16

@Jamsanmum afraid it may be more than that. There were 3 recalls for each show today and will be 3 more tomorrow. Each had a max of 20ish kids in it. So that's why creatives were tweeting they had watched 120 videos - because 6x20 = 120. However, some of those recalled people will have two recalls, and obviously can't be in 2 shows! Setting aside the choir who were recruited separately, I think Hunchback will have about 40 performers and the other two will have high 20s. So to get to a cast of about 30 from 120 would mean a 1 in 4 chance, but the double recalls will probably reduce that to somewhere around 1 in 3. Whatever happens, they've all done really well.

Triflefan · 17/04/2021 23:14

@Jamsanmum I made my head hurt trying to work that out earlier.
I think it must be 120 being recalled per show.
I believe there were 3 workshops today 10:30 2:30 and 4:30. If it’s the same tomorrow then that’s likely to be 60 ish per show per day?

I did overhear one of the directors saying they could cast the shows 3-4 times over with the recallees so that would make sense.
I may have this completely wrong but I have a vague recollection of the Kiss me Kate cast being 32?

Jamsanmum · 17/04/2021 22:53

So there were 65 kids in the afternoon recall this arvo.... and they were split across the three shows. Assuming the same this morning and then also tomorrow. So roughly 40 seen sat and 40 seen sunday for each show? I can’t imagine they can pull a show like henrietta off with only 20 kids... it needs an ‘adult’ and child ensemble... so 30 min...? I’m guessing of course! My Dd is overthinking everything ... was she asked to sing because she wan’t good enough in her self tape ... or because they wanted to hear more of her sing?! Hate the wait!

Did someone say earlier in the week that those not cast will automatically be considered for the workshop..?
Hope everyone recalled today is feeling good ... anyone recalled tmrw..?! Good luck!

janinlondon · 17/04/2021 22:25

DD also in the Henrietta recall this afternoon- And also wasn’t expecting to have to sing pieces from the show. But enjoyed doing it.

allhailthebrain · 17/04/2021 22:21

@biscuitsneeded I think that's a pretty valid excuse if that's right!

I'm intrigued as to numbers this year. This morning I saw one of the creatives had said they had watched all 120 self tapes and was looking forward to it but they used the hashtag #hunchback so I presumed that was 120 for that show. Tonight I saw Kate G (Henrietta) had also posted she had watched all 120 tapes... but she hashtagged every show! If there were only 120 recalls across the board then chances are far better...

Numbers wise - they told mine in first recall they were looking for 70 in total for Hunchback including the choir (so maybe 50 MT?) then 20-30 for each of the other two shows but they were trying to keep numbers low in case of social distancing restrictions. So somewhere around 100-110 plus workshop. Last year they had 250 in total including the workshop. Numbers are certainly lower (obviously with there being one show less) so they've all done fantastically well to get here.

Belshels · 17/04/2021 22:04

@Lonecatkitten is your daughter on a wait list for a 2nd show, and already in Peter Pan. I was wondering if they would do this?

Biscuitsneeded · 17/04/2021 22:02

@allhailthebrain sorry!

My DS seemed to think they had a stand -in MD today (although no singing for his recall show anyway) because someone was having a baby. So maybe the real MD still needs to view the tapes? DS usually makes sense but he seemed a bit vague about the details on this, so who knows?!

allhailthebrain · 17/04/2021 20:44

@biscuitsneeded I've gone off you Grin Wink

Dammit! I thought we had a definitive date answer there!

I wonder why they need the extra time - could be a hundred things I guess!

Alakazam8 · 17/04/2021 20:42

Good luck everyone- doesn’t seem too long to wait for you all this time!

allhailthebrain · 17/04/2021 20:40

@jamsanmum mine loved it too - said in their group that only 4 people were asked to sing and were given tips and things to try while they did so.
All read the piece and some were also asked to do a further (different) piece. Then obviously the dance. No idea if they were the same group though!

Biscuitsneeded · 17/04/2021 20:38

Slightly mixed messages again about results. The Billy recallees were told two weeks because there is still stuff to sort out. They can't release results for one show and not another, because some kids are recalled for more than one show and then the teams have to work together to work out who gets who. Let's hope the Henrietta creatives are right and the others have it wrong!! But I wouldn't bank on knowing by the end of the week... Really hope we will know within 2 weeks though.

Jamsanmum · 17/04/2021 20:31

My Dd was in Nymt recall for Henrietta this afternoon... anyone else? She love it and felt it went well but did think it was a bit odd in parts... got all the kids to read bits and read bits again but not given any direction at all - just read a scene once (and then later was asked to read again - but again no direction)... given they’d already seen them read on self tapes, i think she just didn’t really need understand what else the creatives could see (beyond what was on their tapes)... loved it though. She wasn’t expecting have to sing but enjoyed the opportunity to do that.
They were told ‘end of next week’ for decisions...😳😬

allhailthebrain · 17/04/2021 20:25
@allhailthebrain - welcome!
Thanks!

Mine seemed to think it went well... We'll see!

So, room for a little one in the waiting room...?

Apparently it will be late next week... Can't believe we will finally know for sure!

Lonecatwithkitten · 17/04/2021 20:03

@Newgirls

Got an email for bymt saying dd on the reserve list for a performer. I guess just wait to hear if anything changes nearer the time 🤷‍♀️
Historically everyone on the reserve list has got a show. DD was reserve list last year and even lockdown etc, by May they had offered her Peter Pan.
