NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

DD loved her BYMT audition today. No tears this time!

How did you get on @feelinhopeful ??

@feelinhopeful so do both and as @doesanybodyhaveamap says some are firmly in one camp.
DD didn't audition for NYMT last year as she felt BYMT was more her tribe. No point auditioning this year as she is already on a held over 2020 show.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 20/02/2021 10:16

DD doing a BYMT workshop today actually... we're in the 'keep all options open' camp 😘

@feelinhopeful no singing at all, just dancing and acting today x

And not too late for BYMT, some try both but not everyone. You'll find people who firmly prefer one over the other- in both camps!

@doesanybodyhaveamap did they have to sing on their own for the audition workshop? She's getting herself into a flap about it all this morning!

@Lonecatwithkitten is it too late to audition with BYMT too? Do many people audition with both or is it generally one or the other?

Lonecatwithkitten · 20/02/2021 04:24

@feelinhopeful definitely not the rounded triple threat needed for BYMT. There is a range of shows dance connections for the stronger dancers, devised shows that suit the actor singers more.
My DD got a devised she her first year when she was more an actor singer, last year from the auditions as she became more triple treat she got Peter Pan.
DD had really only been in a local MT group doing quite well when she went for her first audition NYMT didn't go well, but it turned out she was brewing appendicitis. BYMT she found the audition friendlier and more welcoming.
She adored her first BYMT show thoroughly enjoying the whole two weeks she was away.

So pleased we hear either way after submitting videos. Dd is submitting as performer and I’ve already been in touch with them. They seem very friendly and encouraging so I’m sure they will be the same with the children!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 19/02/2021 18:21

They get asked to read any character(s) and stop and start in particular places, so hard to learn the whole thing. Try not to stress 😍

@doesanybodyhaveamap

Yes, it will probably arrive any time now... but they don't need to learn it, just get familiar with it.

Good luck and hope she has fun!

Excellent thanks. She's a bit of a perfectionist so she'll probably try to learn it!
@feelinhopeful if she's through to workshop then they are happy enough with her singing. My DD not a triple threat- she can move, but isn't a 'dancer'. So she found that tough in the workshop. She got in last year x
Thank you, did you receive some script to learn in advance of the zoom workshop? They said on the Facebook live that it would be sent out but we haven't received anything.

My DD has her NYMT zoom this weekend. She's really nervous, I've never put her forward for anything like this so don't know what to expect. She can dance and act to a high standard but her singing isn't as strong (she can hold a tune well enough but not soloist material) do they realistically need to be a "triple threat"?

Do people generally apply for NYMT and BYMT?

I'm totally out of my comfort zone with all this as I have no idea how to help her.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 19/02/2021 15:56

Hi @Alakazam8 you will definitely hear either way, but it will take a while for musician news I think.

Does anyone know if you hear back after submitting videos either way? Fist time doing this and just wondering so I can prepare dd.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 21:45

Lol, I'd consider that a bonus!

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 16/02/2021 21:39

I’m not sure. Slightly complicated by the fact a friend of dh is MD for one of their summer shows.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 21:31

Well.. she said she did the best she could. That's all anyone can do, right? In their hands now... apparently it could be up to a month before we hear!!!

She has a BYMT one booked on Saturday so we'll give that a go too! All good experience....

Has DS thought about the BYMT musician pool? If successful they don't have to reaudition for that one in future years, once they're in, they're in....

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 16/02/2021 21:02

Oh no. It is so difficult on zoom and I’m sure she did fine. They will be aware of the difficulties with zoom.

Dd has got very upset on occasions when she’s struggled to hear or see or screen freezing for her normal college classes.

The thing with ds’s playing is I have absolutely no idea what his standard is. The very few classical pieces that he plays under extreme sufferance are about Grade 5. But he barely practises them whereas he’ll spend hours practising Jason blinking Robert Brown! I think he plays this other stuff (musical theatre scores) to a higher standard but I don’t really know. And his technique needs a lot of work.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 20:16

I wouldn't worry about the grade thing. The way he plays will be the main thing they are interested in. DD's last exam on her first study was grade 3 at age 8!! She's now playing at above G8 standard. It just gives them some idea of standard for those that follow the grades route.

OP posts:
doesanybodyhaveamap · 16/02/2021 20:14

@Comefromaway she came out and burst into tears! She doesn't feel it went well but it is so hard to judge these things over zoom.

We haven't heard anything about the musician application yet so fingers crossed for that 🤞🏻🤞🏻

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 16/02/2021 11:04

How did she get on?

Application to NYMT submitted. The section about experience/grades etc was a it un-nerving as I had to put ds has only been playing the piano for 3 years and has no grades.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 13/02/2021 09:49

Eek! DD in her workshop right now! Let 3 hours of nervous pacing commence....

@Yr10mom I think they'll wait until after the stage performers are at least through the online workshops x

OP posts:
Yr10mom · 13/02/2021 09:00

put her videos in....

Yr10mom · 13/02/2021 09:00
