NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Mine would honestly be delighted to be in any of them. We saw Billy the Kid in 2017 and really enjoyed it, and the music is great, and I think DS would like to be a cowboy (!), but at the same time he was cast in Henrietta last year and that looked like it would have been amazing, so he'd love the chance to revisit that too. And Hunchback sounds like it will be very special and might get quite a bit of a buzz around it so that would be quite an experience. Quite honestly he would play third tree from the left if it meant he could have the NYMT experience again.

Alakazam8 · 28/02/2021 17:19

Good luck to all who are waiting like us. Does anyone’s dc have a particular show they would like or are happy just to wait and see.
We are hoping for Hunchback for a particular reason (won’t say exactly what) as it seems to be going to be quite a different production.

Triflefan · 28/02/2021 12:00

@Biscuitsneeded This is exactly it.
This last year has been tricky for even the most enthusiastic and positive people

Fingers crossed for them all

Biscuitsneeded · 28/02/2021 10:26

@Triflefan I think some initial reluctance to commit this year has been very common, certainly among DS's friends who have done NYMT before, or got in for the first time last year. They know what they lost last year and some of them didn't want to take the risk of being given a place and then losing it again. I understand that. Now that things look a bit more hopeful (fingers firmly crossed!) lots of them have submitted over the last week or so. I think NYMT understand that.

Triflefan · 28/02/2021 09:12

Thank you @doesanybodyhaveamap and @Biscuitsneeded

I thought I’d tagged you both but clearly I’ve forgotten how to use mumsnet!

Triflefan · 28/02/2021 09:01

On phew! And thanks for responding so quickly. It was a tense moment 😆
He’s now going back to bed apparently 🤣

I’d wanted him to submit ages ago but he’s struggled to get his head in the game despite being desperate to be involved again. Now the sun is out he’s a new person! To get back to college will be the icing on the cake

Biscuitsneeded · 28/02/2021 08:59

As far as I know, no need for photos. In a webchat they said they had a super detailed spreadsheet with links to everyone's videos so I suppose they will refer to that. DS had to wait a few weeks to hear about his workshop, but fingers crossed as the deadline is today they will move quickly to view the final submissions and get workshop invitations sent out. Good luck to your DS Triflefan!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 28/02/2021 08:55

Only part answered again 🤦‍♀️ we submitted in first week of Jan and it was about 3 weeks I think until the invites came out to workshops. But I think it's varied as the process has gone on. Guess it depends on availability of people to assess the videos and then they are grouping them into sets of 40 so when they reach 'critical mass' that's when the invites go out? Hypothesising of course...

Hi @Triflefan ! No requirement for headshots- unless we missed it too....

Best of luck to DS.

Hello everyone. I haven’t been on here since the beginning of the NYMT2020 thread so I hope you’ve all sailed through this shitty year with relative ease.
DS finally submitted his and it occurred to me that he didn’t submit headshots.
Were they supposed to this year?
He’s worrying that he missed a section but I’m assuming they’ll just take a screenshot from their videos perhaps?
He was cast for Kiss Me Kate last year and I can give nothing but brilliant feedback regarding everything NYMT did to keep them all engaged.
Roughly how long did everyone find out if they were invited to virtual workshops after submitting their pieces?

Newgirls · 27/02/2021 13:50

Ah makes sense about the licences

With the musicians I’d imagine they’d want to try them with the scores in some way? We shall see!

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/02/2021 13:30

@Biscuitsneeded BYMT commission and own most of their scripts/scores which makes it much easier as they don't need to apply for licences. So adding extra shows is easy. Having been responsible for applying for licences they are a nightmare and really complex.

Yr10mom · 27/02/2021 13:21

@Newgirls they mentioned there might be workshops i think but didn’t say absolutely

Biscuitsneeded · 27/02/2021 13:13

@chaperonemum Yes it's been so sad for everyone. I expect most of the DC on this thread lost at least one production last year. Some of DS' friends seem to have forgotten how much they love doing shows over lockdown - not sure if that's the result of not getting to do any, or just normal teenage stuff. This year needs to be amazing to woo back all those kids who have lost their way a bit.

Newgirls · 27/02/2021 13:04

Will they choose musicians just from their self tapes?

Yr10mom · 27/02/2021 12:47

just checked - nymt musicians heard 22/3 last year but had availability check few weeks before

chaperonemum · 27/02/2021 12:17

@Biscuitsneeded My DD was cast in a production which should have been in May. So, full into rehearsals, costume fittings done etc. They put it back to October but couldn't put it back further due to licensing, costs and the age of some of the cast members. Everyone was understandably gutted. I feel very sorry for everyone who's performances were cancelled. It's great if they can move them back but sadly not always possible.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/02/2021 11:28

Just to add, my DS was one who was cast last year for NYMT but I do understand why they can't just roll the casts over for this year. It is, as a previous poster said, partly because kids grow, voices break etc but it's also because NYMT is smaller and they have to disappoint lots of truly talented applicants every year - it wouldn't be fair to effectively exclude those kids 2 years running without giving them a chance. BYMT can carry casts over for 2021 and still recruit new applicants because it seems like each year they add shows at a later stage if they have enough talented applicants - their upper limit is only fixed by how many shows they can administratively cope with. NYMT plans its season the Autumn before, knows exactly how many performers it needs, has the theatres booked and the creative teams get going early on the shows even before they have the cast in place. It's a totally different way of doing things, and I imagine each way has its merits.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/02/2021 11:18

@chaperonemum it was a few weeks. But don't worry, you will hear something.

chaperonemum · 27/02/2021 09:37

How long was it after submitting
the videos to NYMT that you heard back?

I already feel like I'm constantly checking. With BYMT I know we've got a wait as they have auditions up until late March so I can relax about that one for now.

Biscuitsneeded · 26/02/2021 17:56

@Stagemom which show did your DD get into last year and then not get to do? Has she done NYMT before?

Biscuitsneeded · 26/02/2021 17:47

Hahahha I was wondering what a pig orchestra would sound like!

Yr10mom · 26/02/2021 12:22

pit not pig!

Yr10mom · 26/02/2021 12:22

second comments from DoesAnybody... dd was an nymt musician last year and they reall tried to support them - did a fab collab piece which was just the perfect selection. yes she would have loved to have been ‘rolled over’ but each pig orchestra is a unique grouping so they may well not need her instrument etc this year so she is fine (but is very keen to know!)

Stagemom · 26/02/2021 12:11

So interesting re the differences, that explains a lot. I know NYMT did best to cling onto a performance for their 2020 company? So sad for them especially if they don't fit any of the new parts or get cast this year.
