NYMT / BYMT 2021

Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

Hi @2020again . @Biscuitsneeded is more of an expert than I am but in normal years, NYMT run 4 shows: a touring show in June/July for which the residential rehearsals are over the Easter holidays, and three full scale productions in the summer. In addition they run a workshop of a new musical in development. Usually each project has around 30-40 stage performers I believe (from totting up numbers in previous programmes!!). Last year I recall there being around 1000 applicants. Roles are specifically cast during the audition process. Normally this is in 2 stages: live workshop then recalls.

This year there is no touring show, so one less production but the cast for hunchback will be bigger and better have a stage choir giving roughly the same sized company. I've no idea how many will have submitted this year! Trying to gauge DD's chances and failing dismally...

BYMT run a couple more shows and I think the overall company is a bit bigger in a normal year. This year they have carried shows and places over from last year but added in a couple of extra shows to provide opportunities for this years applicants. They offer places in a show but don't cast until rehearsals start, so are generally more flexible about movement between shows if you can't make certain dates etc..

Hi - what would you say is the main difference between NYMT and BYMT and what the young people get out of the experience?

From posts further up this thread I see that BYMT are honouring castings made last year but in a normal year am I right in thinking that there is more chance of some kind of role in BYMT than NYMT in terms of the number of productions put on?

Also NYMT - does anyone know at all in a normal year how may people audition compared to how many are cast? Trying to work out if this is a pipe dream and she should be auditioning for eveyrthing else at the same time too.
Thanks.

Ahhh well done miniDalek. I think quite a few are finding the dance challenging (my DD sure did). Welcome to the waiting room.... 😖

@DalekFan Glad she enjoyed it. I think everybody finishes up a bit unsure of how it went. Well done to her, and good luck with the waiting!

DalekFan · 07/03/2021 09:45

Hi All, here is DDs verdict on her workshop yesterday.

She really enjoyed it! Dance was hard, she thinks she did ok, but she’s weaker on that than singing/acting. The script work was fun - she’s just worried she didn’t ‘act’ enough - she didn’t want to overdo it, so wonders if she under did it, if that makes sense!

I think she’s not feeling that confident of getting any further, but we will just have to wait now. 😬

Any news for those still waiting to hear about their tapes? 🤞

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/03/2021 23:09

@doesanybodyhaveamap BYMT does normal say shows are between 18/7 and 1/9. But if you get allocated a show you can't do you can apply for a transfer.
2019 DD's show finished on 1/9 Scottish participates were able to class it as educated off site for absence purposes.

Newgirls · 06/03/2021 09:52

Thank you biscuits really appreciated x

Biscuitsneeded · 05/03/2021 20:18

It's all a bit different this year and people seem to be getting news in batches dependent roughly on date of submission, but you should definitely hear something. They are nice and wouldn't leave you wondering indefinitely. We still have several friends who haven't heard anything yet since submitting in late Feb, so my guess is there will be another wave of emails next week.

Newgirls · 05/03/2021 19:13

What about hearing nos? Does everyone here at once or over weeks?

Newgirls · 05/03/2021 19:13

Ah I see!! All sorts of stages!!

My dd sent in her videos for both maybe two weeks ago now? So wondering when she might here next for a recall workshop i guess?

Biscuitsneeded · 05/03/2021 19:05

Heard about what @Newgirls? Some on here have heard about recall workshops, and some have both heard and done them, but some have recently submitted videos and are waiting for news and others are waiting for news post-workshop! It is a bit confusing... What stage is your DC at?

Newgirls · 05/03/2021 13:56

Anyone else heard? I’ve slightly lost track of when the workshops are!

minimits · 05/03/2021 06:48

Great news @Lonecatwithkitten, good to have something solid in the pipeline.

DalekFan · 04/03/2021 21:53

Wonderful news for your DD @Lonecatwithkitten. Here’s hoping for a great performing summer for all our DCs 🤞

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 21:00

@Lonecatwithkitten I'm glad to hear things are coming together for your DD. We all just need to keep fingers crossed now that things can really happen this summer!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2021 19:57

Fab news @Lonecatwithkitten !!! Wow, 19th July is early.... I've just booked DD onto a music course in Austria (a whole different level of optimism, I know...) from 18-24th. Hope I'm not narrowing her options 😳😬

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 19:42

That’s brilliant news for @Lonecatwithkitten’s dd. It must have been so hard to get through and then not be able to perform the show. We are lucky coming in this year as newbies.

chaperonemum · 04/03/2021 18:30

@Lonecatwithkitten how wonderful that your DD can finally get to do the show. Lovely to hear positive news.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/03/2021 17:58

BYMT have sent details today of how the shows held over from last year will work under the current road map. Again we have the four options stay on show, move to different show, move to workshop or full refund. We have to confirm by 19/3 so I imagine this will then help them make final decisions about this years auditionees.
No brainier here stay on show it was DD's dream show so casting work shop 3 days summer half term then off to Devon on 19/7 with five days of performances in August. She is beside herself with excitement to perform again MT is her reason for getting up everyday.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/03/2021 16:03

DS' friends have had yeses but they are all performing friends, many of whom have done NYMT before and all of whom are strong performers, so you would expect them to get recalled for the workshop. I think it's likely the big cut will come between workshop and final recalls. He said the standard in his workshop was really high. Lord knows how they choose!
@Comefromaway and @Alakazam8 I totally hear what you're saying. I can vouch for the competence and professionalism of the NYMT pastoral team, although of course I have no idea what extra measures they have planned to put in place to meet the needs of an inclusive production. And I agree it's nice to have this thread which seems lovely, and supportive. Good luck to all the DC.

Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 15:49

Neither do I but I’m sort of expecting to!

Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 15:22

I don't know anyone in real life who has applied.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/03/2021 15:14

Out of interest, does anyone know of anyone that got a 'no' at the self tape stage??

OP posts:
Alakazam8 · 04/03/2021 15:10

Surely like @Comefromaway says the idea of Hunchback being inclusive will attract young people who otherwise would not think of applying for something like this. Of course I’d be grateful for any show at all but Hunchback is our first choice for other reasons, not to do with which show it is...
This thread is really helping with the waiting, just knowing that there are others waiting too and we are not the only ones!

Comefromaway · 04/03/2021 14:54

The liklihood of him being offered anything of course is very low, we just thought it worth a shot.
