Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

DS struggled because of zoom lag-it was challenging as well I think but doubly hard when the timing is out as it kept freezing. DS also HATES dance on zoom. Not helped by shocking rural broadband! Show wise I’m sure @Biscuitsneeded can give far more info but it seems to range from show to show. BYMT runs the full gamut of full on dance shows and those with just ‘movement’.

I’ve noticed a few comments about the dance being tricky. Are all of the shows very dancy?
DS loves dance but actually really struggles with all the online classes they have at college so he’ll be slightly concerned about that. They have 3 hours on a Tuesday which he’d always emerge from buzzing but at home he really finds it a bit tricky

@Alakazam8 fingers crossed for today. We are also new to this having seen BYMT through school and then NYMT popping up.

I also guess that they would have had a flood of applications nearer the closing date.

Thanks for the info- any insight is great. We dont know anyone who has been in other years so we are coming to it with very little knowledge about it.
Dd is auditioning as a performer, not musician-I’m hoping we don’t have until next Monday to wait!

Depends. They really try to have roles on offer for all ages and plan shows accordingly. This year Billy The Kid could scoop up a lot of mid-teens, for example, as the majority of the cast are meant to be that age. All I meant when I said it is tough for 15 year-old girls is that yes there will be parts for them, but there will also be a LOT of competition. Younger kids may not be so ready to go on residentials where they don't know anyone, but by 13/14 they are usually raring to go!

Nothing yet, but am I correct in thinking that diesanybodyhaveamap’s dd only heard/had a workshop for stage performer, not musician yet?

@Alakazam8 my feeling is that the mid teen years are hardest. Most roles are either for 'adults' or 'kids' so there aren't a huge number available for those in the middle. Then if you add in the fact that some 12/13 yr old girls can be quite mature that puts them in with the mid-teens too. DD13 is petite and undeveloped so can still pass as 11ish. In fact she's smaller than some of DD10's peers. But some of her own Year 9 peers are proper young women!

Noticed pp referring to certain age groups being more difficult to get places. Does anyone know what it’s like for the younger end?

Aw sorry to hear this @Newgirls those mid-teen years are particularly tough. Do do the courses though - we've done some of the skills builder workshops this year and they definitely get to know the kids. I had some lovely comments about DD's progress after the last one she did.
