Starting a new thread for NYMT / BYMT hopefuls in 2021.

DD13 is auditioning for NYMT for the second time as stage performer and as musician. We just received an invite to the next round (online workshops).

She was gutted that Covid put a stop to her show (Imaginary) last year so we are keeping everything crossed that she gets another shot.

We've also booked a BYMT audition and she's already in the musician pool there so hopefully a show of some sort this year if we get some kind of normality back again...

Anyone else out there?

So I've chilled out a bit today. Some contact with BYMT. DD is in their musician pool but we hadn't heard anything so I made contact to find out what happens - do they automatically get put into a show, do we need to express interest etc. Turns out its a good job I did, as she'd not received an email due to an admin error. Basically, she's guaranteed a show as musician. They have her current availability. Musician offers out on 29th March. We are awaiting the outcome of her stage performer audition (final auditions this weekend, news in the last week of March, so probably at the same time). I feel better for knowing that whatever happens now, she will be involved in a show this year.

@2020again I don't know about the acting - I think they kind of look up, read, look up, read. They always do this with the scripted bits, even in person, and it seems to work just fine. Tell your DC not to stress about it as it is very relaxed. For the dancing, they learn it all together and then each person gets a turn dancing on their own, I believe...

Hello All – we should get some comfy sofas for this waiting room 😊

I have 2 questions about the workshops for those who have experience of them:

-If you only get the scripts the night before and are meant to read but not learn them how do you actually act without constantly looking down at script? Are you supposed to “act” into the camera or just “read” the part?

-How does the NYMT team actually view the dancing in the workshops? Do auditionees dance individually for them to look at one at a time or is there a little screen with tiny windows for each person where everyone can see everyone else dancing?

@Alakazam8 we've done a few and she's always enjoyed them, although won't do this one as it sounds like a different format and longer days and she says she can't do longer online than the 3 hours they usually are. I get that tbh...

Anyone heard anything today? . I’m thinking about enrolling dd onto the Easter online course- has anyone done these before? are they quite flexible, not sure how well she will engage with it being online!

Hi everyone another in the waiting room here. Dd is 13 and was meant to be in The Cinderella workshop last year but got cancelled. She auditioned for both BYMT and NYMT this year thinking her BYMT show would be at Easter but now its been moved to the summer we can't really fit in anything else even if offered it (apart from the NYMT workshop if lucky enough to be offered that).

We got our email on Wednesday 17th Feb which said DD had her workshop on 28th Feb. So could be any day x

Ds’s youth theatre group usually run a non auditioned summer school. You can generally book on last minute, the only restriction is making sure there is time to get a performance licence for the younger ones. Last year he was going to ask if he could shadow the M/D or do sound and lighting instead of performing but obviously never happened.

@chaperonemum it's exactly this that is stressing me out. NYMT is so competitive. We could very possibly find ourselves with nothing come summertime because she's held out for this and is then unsuccessful....

Yes we have a dilemma too. We have really good local youth company and Autumn production directed by one of the NYMT team as it happens. Standard always really, really good. But this year the final NYMT show (Billy the Kid) clashes with intensive rehearsal week for local production which is 10 - 6 every day and you can't miss it as it's when they put the show together. If DS were to get Billy he would take it and do without the local show, but it would be very disappointing to have to do that. But he feels he doesn't want to block out any dates which might reduce the chances of getting NYMT as he loves it so much. I hope he's making the right decision...

In the meantime what are you all doing about auditioning for local stuff? DD has a couple of chances to audition but she really wants nymt. Also I could get all the dates overlapping if not careful (not unheard for me!)
