NYMT / BYMT 2021

It is confusing! The summer workshops which you can book onto are sometimes called the summer course which I think is a better description and less confusing! People always seem to enjoy them. Then the one-week 'workshop' for a new project is by audition only, and some of the people they can't place in a show at recalls will get offered that, but not all. Sometimes I think people feel it's a bit of a consolation prize but I don't think they should ! Lots of frequent returners to NYMT have had a year where they have done the workshop, and very often the workshop then gets turned into a full scale production the following year (not with the same cast). I think it must be very interesting to work with creatives at the outset and contribute creatively to their ideas.

"was offered the workshop last year". Are all the NYMT "nos" offered the workshop or is it just some of them, maybe the newbies or is it offered to the "just missed the recalls" - not sure how this works? Thank you.

@Belusha my DD was in growl too and is 16 so I’m sure we must have met- (especially if she has a growl hoodie) DD has also been in three other NYMT productions before growl and was offered the workshop last year and no recall this year. I suspect they have recalled less with recalls being on Zoom. @Comefromaway yes all American productions but no reason why a British accent shouldn’t be used, especially as it’s a British theatre company.

My gut feeling would be not to use an American accent (unless you are American). I'm guessing the available recordings were originally American productions?

@Pinkstargazer12 Personally I wouldn't use an American accent, but why not ask? I'm sure you'll get a response (even if they do seem to be dealing with a lot of admin currently!)

Anyone recalled for Hunchback? DD having a crisis as to whether to do an American accent or not. All the only versions use an American accent. Any idea? Nothing in the notes.

DD did Growl and we went to watch LT as she was also recalled for that so their paths might have crossed biscuits. She is 16 so there are definitely more years of this ahead.

Belusha, I can see how disheartening it might feel but in reality it probably just means that this year and last she just isn't the right height/age etc for the roles they have available.

It's not that uncommon for dancers to start Higher Education 16. She was able to also do 2 academic A levels alongside (there are only a small handful of places that enable this but it was important for her).

Yes, sadly the loan is not an annual amount. Originally an MA was not on the cards for dd but given last year's disruption in training and the state of the industry at the moment she feels its a good option.

@Comefromaway she has done well to have a degree already at 19!! I was hopeful that the SLC masters loan would be an annual amount, but sadly it is just a one off regardless of how many years it takes.....sigh....

@Belusha your poor DD. I'm sure she hasn't gone backwards! DS has LOADS of friends, not kidding, who have done NYMT before, some even had leads, and this year no recall. I think NYMT have been very focused and only recalled small numbers of very suitable people- probably to avoid endless weekends of online recalls! Which show did your DD do in 2019? DS might well know her. He did LT. It's so disappointing when they've had the NYMT experience before, but unless your DD is 22 there will be other chances! I also personally think it's hard for girls in the mid-teens (if that's your DD's age) when they can no longer play child roles but don't yet look mature enough to play adults - but their time will come again.

@doesanybodyhaveamap we have never tried BYMT but will maybe talk about this over the next few days. So far our only experience outside of local theatre has been NYMT. 2019 was DDs first year applying - she was recalled for 2 shows and was so lucky to be offered one. She had the time of her life! 2020 she auditioned and had recalls for 2 shows again and was offered neither. I naively thought that those who were unsuccessful at recalls were offered the summer musical workshop but not so. So this year after not getting a recall she feels she had gone backwards and will never get in again we definitely need to work on that resilience thing!

For MA course you can apply for a Student Loan but its for just over £11,200 and thats to go towards fees and maintenance. I think most postgrad students also work to support themselves/pay fees but performance courses tend to have much higher contact hours so it is more tricky.

Dh is currently also doing a distance learning MA in vocal pedagogy. Back when he was at conservatoire it was only those from wealthy families who could consider further study after their degree. Not an option for him as his parents never even gave him their parental contribution for maintenance during his degree.

It's £14,500 at the place where dd had an interview this week. But they asked her, due to her age (19 rather than 21) , would she consider doing it over two years rather than one year.

@Comefromaway Yes!!!! I don't think we had to pay for the second round RAM auditions though....they missed a trick there, haha! One masters offer (not MT) is for a two year course at £19,200 a year. Tuition. Just tuition. God help us.

I'm still reeling at RAM's audition fee. For an online self tape submission!

Good luck to all those going for BYMT. I wonder what this means for those waiting for news. I'm not sure I can take waiting much longer. We have signed up for other auditions just in case.

@Comefromaway we are also grappling with the financial implications of the masters degrees. Some of them are eye watering fees...!
