NYMT / BYMT 2021

Oh agreed, it's been wretched for so many of them and even harsher on those who had a place last year and now don't. And with recalls not even done yet I am concerned there may be more disappointed in a couple of weeks. But the theatres aren't even open yet. Fingers crossed lots more local opportunities will open up in the next few months for those who miss out this summer. @doesanybodyhaveamap and @aplo I really feel for your DDs but am also quite sure they will back treading the boards before very long. I know there are loads of successful MT performers working in 2021 (or hopefully about to work!) who never got into NYMT despite several years of trying, or who had a long NYMT career but still had a year here and there where they weren't cast, and now look at them! Minimits is right, it's a very scary industry for a child to want to go into, but if they are determined it's very hard to discourage them!

Oh my god i so empathise with this. Its hard to keep a perspective though ... i try to keep focusing on how much resilience they’re building and how valuable it is. We had soooo many near misses in 2019 / early 2020 ... she got sooo close - but always at the 11th hr was snatched away. She’s now no longer young enough for children roles in west end (lost that yr).... but i keep reminding her how much stronger she is for it by bouncing back. It’s ultimately a big test to see if they really want it!

It’s a dreadfully harsh industry. I often wish dd wanted a different career.

I hadn't seen the ragtime video, wow its wonderful! They didn't do anything with those that were cast in the workshop which is a shame.
My dd is also feeling a bit low, always had a recall in the 4 years she's been at it, but none this year😥.
Hopefully this will be the final weekend they will feel a bit down (the weather doesn't help either!) and will be better when all their classes start back next week🤞🏼

This is the first time I’ve had a real wobbly about the career DS wants. I feel his disappointment and sadness so deeply every time (even when he’s moved on) and the thought of this being how it’ll potentially be for many many years to come is painful! I hate seeing him so unhappy but know the highs overcome the lows. Ugh! These kids are so much more resilient than I could ever be.

@doesanybodyhaveamap my Dd is having a really rubbish day about it all today too. This is her sixth year of auditioning and her first not getting a recall. She was doing ok all week and today has admitted to a huge knock in confidence.
It is such a horrible business in that way.

Thanks all - reassuring for us - but sad for those who are still the same height / voice ... and have probably grown in performance techniques yet now not getting cast in the show they were once perfect for! (The harshness tho a reflection of the industry in general though). LOVED THE RAGTIME VIDEO! Wow! Sounds like NYMT pushed the boat out to make up for all the disappointments...

My DD is poss too tall/ old for a child yet too small for an adult part in Henrietta ... but then i guess its all relative.

The Henrietta situation is unique because it's the one show carried forward. This is because NYMT held a competition for writers of musicals to pitch their shows and the winner would see their show workshopped and then (if I remember correctly) done as a full show. So they owe it to the creatives to put it on. It is really hard on some of the kids but equally they really can't have a Henrietta who's 5 foot 5 and expect the audience to buy into the idea that she's a small child.

Just backing up what @Biscuitsneeded said about last years shows. My eldest DS was cast in Henrietta last year and at 23 hasn’t grown or had a change of voice and his recall this year is for hunchback.

What NYMT gave in such limited circumstances to last years casts was fantastic, I know I may be biased as my youngest DS was involved but the video that the ragtime cast did is one of my favourite things from the whole of the last year. The work that was put into that especially by the Musical director for the show was phenomenal with each individual getting feedback and fixing notes on their performances and yet we had ever penny refunded to us from last years fee.

@Jamsanmum all parts are definitely available. My DS was cast in Henrietta last year and he's not recalled for it this time, but I understand why. They want the shows to be the best they can be. The RSC haven't invited back the girls who were about to start as Matildas when the pandemic struck, for the very good reason that they will have grown too tall, and it's the same principle. NYMT did try very hard to give last year's casts some special experiences like zooms with alumni, workshops etc, and they also refunded us every penny. But apart from the recent slight chaos with emails (and honestly in six years of DS doing/applying to NYMT I have never known this happen before and I think they are just dealing with so much that is new and different) they are a very professional organisation. If your DD has a Henrietta recall she has as much chance as everyone else recalled. Good luck with the materials and I hope she has fun in her recall.

What were last year’s nymt cast shows? Kiss me kate was one and Henrietta...? My DD has Henrietta recall but wondering if its already half cast from last year... i can’t imagine the creatives wouldn’t honour the roles given the huge disappointment of the cancellation - unless of course chdn have grown...? My poor DD is working so hard on the material but wondering if there are maybe so few potential parts available .... anyone else have Henrietta call back??

@Newgirls yes what you have booked will be the general summer course. They will offer the places on the workshop (A Kiss for Cinderella) so some of the recalled applicants after recalls.

Just to add, one girl who got recalled a few years ago and didn't get a show got invited to the workshop instead. She did it and played the lead during workshop week, and came back next year when the workshop show was a full production and played the lead again at The Other Palace! So, absolutely worth doing!

Is the workshop the one in Sevenoaks? We got two emails about workshops and I assumed it was for the general summer ones? We booked one of those (tho it might clash with nyt?!!)
