Thought I'd start a thread now that the shows have been revealed. Who's got a DC or student applying? I have a feeling in my bones it won't be my DS's year this time - he's nearly 15, voice not broken but not reliable either, and apart from the one show we don't know I can't see anything he could obviously do! But he'll give it best shot and if no luck we'll still watch the shows. Good luck to all!

I've registered DS(11) for an audition with some trepidation. He's never had acting, singing or dancing lessons but he absolutely loved being in his school production of Les Mis (as Gavroche) and so is going just for the experience. Please tell me he won't get laughed out of the dance session if he has no formal dance training? (that's the bit I'm most concerned about).

And any suggestions for song choices for an 11 year old unbroken boy's voice would be fantastic. I'm a complete amateur at this, no idea what he should pick...

@Lonecatwithkitten. Thank you, he is going to see what happens. If he doesn't get NYMT there's hopefully still a bit of time to book an NYT audition. Couldn't afford to do both so will wait to see, as NYT results not out till May whereas we will know about NYMT by late Feb. It's very difficult to get into NYT as well though so not counting any chickens for either!

@Biscuitsneeded why doesn't he try NYT this summer - not MT I know, but they do do some MT shows. Sounds like he would be likely to be invited to join the company and then he's in till he is 25 and can put himself forward for shows he's interested in.

@folkmamma Now I think of it I am not absolutely sure NYMT do a sumer course. They definitely do one at Easter. The website will no doubt say...

@folkmamma Oh yes sorry, Imaginary does have some termtime Saturdays. But that still leaves 3 summer shows that could be possible. Fingers crossed! I would just note on her audition form that she wouldn't be available for Imaginary because it would be so disappointing to be recalled for something you couldn't actually do.

And thanks for the tip re summer course too, will absolutely look at that! 😍

folkmamma · 08/12/2019 11:18

Oooh did I misunderstand?? 'Imaginary' had some Saturday performance dates for a mini pop up tour I thought?

Biscuitsneeded · 08/12/2019 11:14

@folkmamma there are no termtime Saturdays! Just auditions and recalls, but you can opt for Sundays for those. Otherwise it's entirely Easter and summer hols. NYMT also do a non-auditioned summer course, by the way. Best of luck to your DD.

@Biscuitsneeded I remember him!! He was fantastic!! Fingers crossed it works out for him this year.

An actor musician role would be the absolute dream for DD - unfortunately I think the two things where there might be an opportunity for that are not going to work for us date wise. She can't do anything involving term time Saturdays because of London JD, and is away on tour with her county orchestra when the new musical workshop is on.

Also going for BYMT (again as both!) and if nothing comes of either then we will look at non-auditioned BYMT course.

Best of luck to everyone 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/12/2019 10:44

DD is auditioning for BYMT and NYT ( both the same weekend one Saturday and the other Sunday). She has professional training college auditions and is in Adams Family and Aladdin in the spring and NYMT auditions clashed with those events.
She attended BYMT's youth forum at Mountview last weekend that she found really interesting. She also made so suggestions for things they could do differently.
BYMT has no yet revealed all it's shows so far Breadboy, Peter Pan, Cabernet Macabre and Goblin Market have been announced.

Biscuitsneeded · 08/12/2019 09:56

@Stringchild If successful they get allocated to a show, I think - but you could probably state a preference or ask to avoid one if the dates don't work. It will probably depend a bit on which instruments are required for which shows.

@folkmamma I don't want to completely out myself/my DS by naming his character but yes we probably do know some of the same people! My DS was the 'uncool' one of the gang - the comedy character with the overprotective mum who always needed his inhaler! I think I know who you are referring to! Smile

Dd is first time auditioning as musician; just saw the shows - do they get chosen fir certain ones or do they get a choice?

folkmamma · 08/12/2019 07:57

Oh wow biscuits! I suspect we may have some mutual friends (or at least our kids do!) as we were there to support two other cast members, one on stage and one musician. 😍😍😍

Biscuitsneeded · 07/12/2019 22:34

Hi Folkmamma!

Your DD sounds great. NYMT also consider actor-musicians for shows that can use them so perhaps there's something there for her? And don't assume nothing will come of it. I signed DS up for an audition when he was 10 'just for the experience' and he's been very lucky and been a part of NYMT every year since then, even though I fear he is a tricky age now so he may have to sit the next year or two out. I hope your DD enjoys the audition - NYMT always make it great fun, whatever the outcome. So pleased you enjoyed Legend Trippers - my DS was in that one!

I have DD12 trying for the first time. Auditioning as musician as well as stage performer. We watched Legend Trippers last year and the standard was absolutely phenomenal so I'm thinking the audition will probably just be for experience this time. She's possibly still a bit young for musician although perfectly able and above the minimum standard. Lives and breathes theatre, so I suspect we'll be regulars on these threads in the coming years as she keeps trying!!!
